Obviously the team that trades for him is going to give him a contract extension, but I'm not sure they're going to make him the captain.

Seriously. Someone should alert the Sabres about this to let them know that it's not that hard to remove completely unnecessary elements of your uniform (like, say, armpit stains, vertical piping, and silver outlines around EVERYTHING in your logo). As for the draft, you could argue that Manuel has the highest upside of all the QBs but the notion of the Bills developing a raw talent into a star player is hilarious given their track record. The other three picks are all kinda "meh" too. I'm excited about having normal looking collars on the uniforms though.

There is to me. I've been thinking about the draft as 8 top-end players (Jones, Drouin, MacKinnon, Barkov, Lindholm, Monahan, Nurse, and Nischushkin) and then a normal group of guys after that. We're exactly in the worst place to be. Again. When you draft around 10th, you're not a playoff team and you're not drafting high enough to have hope for the future.

Hmmm, well in that case only 29 teams come to mind.

Well, we just wasted another season and are currently about as far away from winning the Stanley Cup as we've ever been. I'm not sure I'm ready to celebrate that we found two more "not top line players."

Hooray! Thank goodness we hurt our draft position with a meaningless win! Gotta love your Buffalo Sabres. Completely incompetent when it matters but they never fail to gobble up garbage points when there's nothing on the line. We're one Flyers loss away from the 9th overall pick -- just about the worst place you could be as a franchise. ###### this franchise. Fire everyone.

Hopefully this evens things out some. Hope they keep Catenacci in there too.

Shinkaruk plays in the WHL. Putting up points like that there is a lot different from doing it in the Q (i.e., a ton more impressive). 86 points in 64 games this year. 91 points in 66 games last year.

Except for this one. This season had no hope. If you're the worst team in the league, you can hope for the draft. If you're good, you can hope for the playoffs. The Sabres are pretty consistently in the worst, most hopeless place imaginable.

I would argue that the summer right after a player's best year ever is probably the best time to trade him. Regier learned the hard way with Stafford. If he won't re-sign, the return is zero. Re-signing him isn't impossible though. We'll have to overpay (which everyone does for the top players) and Pegula himself will probably have to assure Vanek that if the team still completely sucks 3 years from now, they'll trade him to a contender (see: Iginla). They could play on his ego too. If the Sabres win the Cup in the next 6 years and he's part of it, we'd retire his number. No other team can offer that.

Well, the Sabres have nothing to play for and Winnipeg's season is on the line, so all signs point to a Jets win here. Which means it's time for another one of the Sabres' patented meaningless late-season wins. 6-2 Buffalo.

We won the division that year. You honestly think that without Miller we miss the playoffs entirely?

Enroth led us to the playoffs three years ago and the year before that was when Myers dominated the whole league as a rookie and we won the division. Miller is a good goalie but we can't really give him credit for our two post-2007 trips to the playoffs.

It really wasn't any better in the past. If anything, it was worse because people had fewer options. Things are better now because the internet lets regular people balance out what happens when professional journalists are lazy or misleading. (For a sports example, check out how Deadspin was the only outlet to notice the Manti Te'O thing.)

I could live with Enroth/Hackett/Leggio for a season just to see what happens. Goalies are weird so who knows?
