The "very bright guy" once swapped the first pick of the 6th round straight up for a future 6th round pick which from a purely logical aspect is just about the dumbest trade that has ever been made.

In terms of making catastrophically bad decisions Botts is up there with Milbury and just about his absolute worst was not sacking the comically in over his head Phil Housley in January 2019 after a run of insanely dumb luck had us in playoff contention but we were in total free fall. Had he been replaced by someone merely competent I think that team makes the playoffs. Then he sacked Housley at the end of the season and hired the single worst coach in NHL history.

I think people aren't giving KA enough credit here. The guy took 3 of the worst hands you could possibly have (Jack injured and demanding out, Sam a year from UFA, Risto a year from UFA after becoming the biggest LOLCOW in the sport) and got an incredible return on all 3 that few people would've thought possible.

He was the one who asked out after the 19-20 season, which led to the disastrous attempts that offseason to make things work. In fact if he didn't ask out I think they would've been far more agreeable to take the risk and allow that surgery.
