  1. Awesome info, guys. I do need to get gear first, but I've been threatening such to my wife for a while now. I think now is the time to go for it. I currently only have goalie skates, but don't want to play goal anymore. I'll follow up when I've got my gear. Sorry everyone else for hijacking the thread
  2. I haven't played in almost 18 years, but was thinking about getting back into it (I'm 33). Would looking into a league at the Piers be a good idea? I live uptown but have a car, so Yonkers/the boroughs could work. What would be a good way to get my skills back up? I don't just want to join a league cold. Also probably gotta hit the gym first. (I'm 5'10", 175, pretty strong skater when in practice)
  3. While I've seen much criticism of how he may or may not utilize advanced stats in his game plans/lines/etc., haven't people usually praised the system he uses as being good for the "modern" NHL?
  4. Sam never played center since his 2018 "awakening" Also, I don't think Sam is a worse skater than ROR
  5. Girgensons and Larsson play pretty physical, and Okposo straight-up ran someone over last night who got in his way. We have some physicality on the team. The problem is Mittelstadt, Sheary, and Thompson not being particularly strong and usually matching up against bigger players. ERod has gotten better, but even he will get leveled by bigger d-men. Finding high-skill players who can play a very physical game is not easy, and they come at a premium.
  6. He's trying to make his own brand/style, I guess... I must admit, I'm enjoying him much more than I did at first, and I think he's gotten better. Nonetheless, I find many of his go-to calls ("Eichel tower," "Sam-I-am") absolutely cringe-worthy
  7. I'm sure someone will provide all of the details, but I don't think there's a penalty for the team unless the contract is signed after the player is something like 31 or 32.
  8. Just pointing out how strong on the puck and on his feet he has become since his first two season. He used to get knocked over every shift. I hardly ever see him getting knocked over anymore.
  9. Duclair has a sick skill-set, though- it's tempting if you think he just needs the right line-mates/utilization
  10. I did see some of the "progress" JBott was alluding to in this game. Unfortunately, no one seems to care about any progress on the power play. Maybe they're so focused on coaching other elements of the game that they don't care about the power play now, either? Isn't there some assistant coach we can bring in to fix it? We will not compete for anything if this is what our power play looks like, and we have some talented players on it.
  11. Don't understand how any fan could have watched so far (even prior to Dahlin just now) and said "I don't wanna watch anymore"
  12. Remember, firing Wowie would actually be a huge risk for JBotts. If he does fire him, and the rest of the season continues the current trend, guess who's head rolls next? Even if Housley is a (or the) problem, JBott better be pretty damn sure that someone else can right the ship before letting Phil go. Is Jason feeling lucky?
  13. Plus, those $'s go a lot further in Buffalo than they do in Toronto! He can have a bigger house.
  14. You're really going to put the quality of our 17-18 roster (or lack thereof) squarely on JBott? I feel like you make some very astute, well-articulated points, and then you go off the deep-end.
  15. To be fair, they are(/were) actual roster players, as opposed to money out the window.
  16. Is it bad if I want a certain player on our own team to get injured? just a jest- please don't bite me for negative thoughts, karma...
  17. Who knows? Maybe Pegula decided to draw the line with the Sabres being a money-pit. 6million (or whatever it was) is really a lot of money, and Pegula has thrown away so much already. People with a lot of money have money because they care about money. This is all pure speculation... and maybe, to endear himself to the owner, JBott said "hey, I can make this work without throwing millions out the door" Obviously, this is a dynamic we'll never be privy to, unless JBott is unceremoniously fired and gets twitter.
  18. Yeah, the trick is combining all of these metrics together into one formula, which is not always easy. Like reconciling quantum theory and classical physics...
  19. goaltenders who make the big saves at the right moment. Not just as defined by SV% or GAA; A goaltender can allow 4 goals, but if the team is up 5-4 and is bombarded in the 3rd and doesn't crack, the team has gotten "clutch goaltending"
  20. Here's a variable I'm curious about- how much can metrics account for clutch goaltending? We definitely had it during the streak. How would the metrics for the Hasek teams have looked? More circumstantial stuff: the dealing of ROR at the time he was dealt furthers my suspicion that there was also pressure to deal him from ownership. Wouldn't dealing him before a bonus was paid be more of an ownership decision than a management decision? (i.e., a manager with a blank check from ownership would probably paid the bonus and then deal, right?)
  21. I actually made a mistake about the details of the 3-way deal. COL did end up getting more than we got for ROR. I hereby withdraw this as an exhibit illustrating your negative bias, but I do not cede that you are without such bias!
  22. 2019 third round pick, forward prospect Shane Bowers (drafted 28th overall, currently playing at BU), AHL goaltender Andrew Hammond Nothing to really hang their hat on, at this point. This shines a light on jame's negative bias, no?
