Yeah, how many guys have a career year the season before UFA status? UFAs are also 27+ so at their peak or starting the downhill side of their careers. UFA is a decent place to look for complimentary pieces but not your go to guys.

Good comparable. That duo played almost 30 minutes each. There was a Norris trophy Dman on the ice at all times. Selanne was the only superstar forward on that Cup winner. Getzlaf and Perry were emerging stars.

If Dahlin and Power develop into #1 Dmen, this team will be difficult to play against. The possession numbers will favour our team. If Mule keeps improving, this defense could be the best I’ve seen since the Avs had Blake, Bourque and Foote. It will be hard to get to the Habs big 3 level (Robinson, Savard, Lapointe) but you never know. Mule, Johnson or a draft pick could be the next big piece.

One thing that Power’s decision did for me was to be more patient and think longer term for development. The Sabres have been picking so early for a while that these guys have been inserted immediately and put under the pressure of NHL hockey and fans’ expectations. I would like Nemec or Jiricek but I am not opposed to taking a RHD like Nelson with a later pick.

It is challenging for a coach to tick all of the boxes on a checklist. Even HOF coaches wear out their welcome at some point. They lose the room, don’t keep up with innovations, lose their passion or just don’t mesh with their bosses and/or star players. I think DG is doing a good job with this group. They are building a team and seem to want to play for each other and DG. I think DG is smart enough to adapt to what is required for his team to take the next step. Defense is easier to teach than offense and he can implement his system once this young team’s creativity has blossomed. DG will reach a point where he will be let go, but I don’t see it on the horizon. If KA doesn’t address the goalie situation this may change.

The new culture will be in place for them to fit into, they will not be expected to create it or take a leading role. It will also be a new culture that they can join and help it grow. I am excited more and more every day.
