Exactly. The Sabres were not skating, they lacked energy. The Islanders are battle tested and we’re waiting for this game. The Sabres were not able to play their game. Two periods were what the Isles wanted, dump and chase, cycle the puck and clog up the neutral zone. Sabres aren’t dead but this is a big loss. Not much rest time coming either.

Savoie with 1G 1A so far, game is in the third. I would rather be looking at the Sabres playoff chances but…

They need to find some energy. They are much faster than the Isles so they’ve got to stretch them out and open up the game. Dahlin is a key player to getting the puck out and put them on their heels. The Isles goal just gave them a big lift. Get the next one and let them struggle to find offense.

TNT may hit a plateau. Dahlin, Cozens and Mitts are not even at their primes. Skinner and Tuch could drop a bit. VO is the wid card, he could have a reduced role. Quinn, Krebs, JJP and Power have nothing but upside. Even Jost could get a bump. I see injuries as the only thing to make their numbers worse.

VO and see how he responds. Isn’t that how it is supposed to work. He either gets back in and works hard, gets out of his funk and helps the team make the playoffs, or he continues this run, gets a permanent pass to the press box and gets traded at the draft. He must know he’s been s****y.

He deserves to play until a youngster forces him out. He has improved his game, he needs to work on his shot and trust it more. He’s homegrown and wants to be in Buffalo. The chemistry he is developing with Cozens is a good thing, and a pairing that can still improve. Casey is far from a favourite of mine but as much as I want Savoie, Kulich or another young gun move into the top 6, they will need time and have to earn it. If he can be extended on a reasonable deal, that makes him a more valuable piece when the time comes to move him. He could also be the leader of a very good third line in a few years. VO can go ASAP.

If I was coach I would go with Comrie in net. He has played well enough to win a few in a row and he may be the guy that heats up at the right time. You can’t ride Anderson more than once a week so one of Comrie/UPL needs to take the net.

I’m ready to move on from VO, unless he heats up again and nets some key goals to help this team get a WC spot. That is probably the only thing that will make me like him again. I don’t know about the analytics but to my eye he brings very little when he is in a slump. He struggles to get the puck out and doesn’t help on zone entries. His board work is weak and he stays on the perimeter, hoping for a pass. I know 23 goals is not chump change but he has just disappeared at a key point in the season.

Brisson was Rob Blake’s agent during his playing days. Their kids played minor hockey together.

I’ll give KA and his team a C+. Goalie: I don’t think there was much available so it’s hard to blame him here. Saros may have been available but the price was too rich for his liking. Getting a 3rd for Portillo was a surprise, I didn’t think they would get anything. Defense: This is where I am disappointed, their depth has been exposed early in the season and now with Dahlin out. Getting a 4-5 guy would help now and push Bryson further away from the ice. Stillman brings some grit that was lacking but I think his ceiling is a 6. I wonder if KA knew of Hronek or if Stevie Y wanted him moved to the west. I thought Jensen or Fabbro could have helped before they were extended. Forward: I like the Greenway trade and had wanted him for a few weeks. He won’t be a game changer but he adds size, toughness, defensive awareness and playoff experience. He is young enough to fit into this group and it sounds like DG wants to whisper in his ear. I also hoped for a few mid round picks for weaponizing cap space. Oh well, many teams will be in cap hell this summer after this arms race, he may get a cap dump like to fill a hole. Thinking something like the Nick Leddy move from a few years ago.

Interesting that they get a 3rd for Portillo and only a 7th for Asplund, an actual NHL player.
