Who will be the Sabres Rookie of the Year?
matter2003 replied to GASabresIUFAN's topic in The Aud Club
Maybe the Sabres should be scouting this player for the future... -
They weren't quite that bad...they finished with 85 points. They actually only had 72 the year before, and were the 5th worst team in the NHL, so maybe that is what you were thinking of. But then they went from 85 points to 110. That is a meteoric jump and nobody expected it. So if we are following that track we probably end up around mid 80's to low 90's and then next year would be that big jump.

Anyone know what is going on with Lyubushkin? Reported he was a healthy scratch last night...I thought he was playing very well for us and brought a much needed physical presence and nastiness to the lineup. Ah...NVM, this explains it better in detail...re-aggravated whatever was bothering him from blocking the shot...assuming its an ankle or foot by the way they talked about it. https://www.buffalohockeybeat.com/ilya-lyubushkin-out-again-sabres-plan-to-add-new-defenseman/

I mean, hell yes. 😂

This team reminds me a lot of the Sabres team coming out of the lockout...tons of young skilled players but everyone thought they would take a while to put it together. I am not suggesting they will have a similar path but there are a lot of similarities.

Granato has a chance to become a legendary coach of the Sabres who took players that seemingly were ruined by other coaches and basically left for dead and completely turned their careers around. Dahlin, Skinner, Okposo, Thompson, etc...I mean did anyone see Okposo becoming a key player for the Sabres? The calls were for the Sabres to buy him out because he was so bad. I am not sure how many other coaches would have been capable of doing what Granato has done here with what he was working with at the time, but it's been amazing to see this young team blossom when a coach just started to believe in them instead of put them in the doghouse every time they made a mistake and made them afraid to play their game. If he doesn't get any consideration for Coach of The Year the voting is rigged.

Dahlin is getting ready to become a no-brainer All-Star for the next 10 years every year and will likely be in the Norris conversation for the next decade and win a few. He has finally blossomed into what we hoped we would get...his defensive game is so much better than last year, his offensive confidence is at an all-time high and he is expertly picking his spots as to when to join the rush and jump into the play. Now imagine when we have another one in a few years with him and Power both playing at this level? It might not even be fair.

I mean they aren't really far off the pace they had since the end of February to the end of last year where I believe they were averaging around 3.4 G/Game. It's not like they weren't scoring 4 goals relatively consistently towards the of last year and this just came out of nowhere. It was building, a lot of people didn't want to see it tho. The additions of Tuch and Krebs to the lineup and the return of Middlestadt from injury really boosted the teams scoring.

I think they have been much improved after a rough start to the year. 2 goals in each of the last 2 games on the PP. Have at least 1 PP goal in every game starting with the EDM games with the exclusion of the trash game in SEA.
-
They are steadily climbing...up to 14th and 23.5%...starting with the EDM game they have at least 1 PPG in each of the games except the debacle in Seattle, and have 2 PPG in each of their last 2 games... As they'd say in England, "They are starting to hot it up."

nope... Of the 3 I missed: -one was a major PP goal scorer back in the 80s and early 90s and also in the HOF -one was on the Sabres broadcast team at some point -one was an older brother of a much more famous player that played for the Blackhawks and put up 8 100+ point seasons and was elected to the hockey HOF.

Sabres have a GF% of 60.87% at even strength, 3rd best in the NHL behind Vegas(67.57%) and Boston(63.04%). They are 4th in the NHL with 28 even strength goals behind only LA Kings(30 - but played 2 extra games) and the Bruins and Islanders with 29(both have played 9 games like we have). Compare this to last year where they were 28th in GF% at 43.35% and 23rd in even strength goals with 176. Basically are getting an extra even strength goal per game this year, going from 2.14 last year to 3.11 this year. I don't think this is a fluke, I this this team is starting to show they are pretty good. How good? I guess we will see(I am on record expecting 87-90 points this year), but many times teams "arrive" sooner than expected and decline sooner than expected.

It is amazing how people want to just act like things should click right away and it doesn't take time to shake off some rust and find their groove...especially with a young team incorporating new players. They are up to 14th now at a 23.5% clip, steadily climbing. Find something else to worry about, this isn't it. They are second in the NHL in scoring at 4.11 G/game, and the PP hasn't really been clicking on all cylinders yet...imagine what they could be like when it does...scary.
