  1. On the flip side, this inference isn't as obvious as you make it seem. What if it was a good coach who went from a bad situation to a good situation? Let's be honest here, neither of us is going to sit down and operationalize success/failure to a satisfying degree AND do the legwork to see who wins the bet
  2. I can only assume Craig Rivet will soon propose signing Girardi to fix the D. He's old, slow, and blocks shots. Perfect!
  3. I'd bet for every example of a coach failing the first go-round, learning, and being successful on his second chance, I could find one that failed, and failed again. Which is why I think it's a big zero in my evaluation.
  4. I think it's neither a concern nor a plus. It's a shoulder shrug.
  5. All the more reason why moving him doesn't make any sense at all.
  6. The lack of head coaching experience is certainly a valid critique of Housley's resume. The lack of NHL head coaching experience in particular, however, I don't believe is especially strong.
  7. How does moving the guy actually earning his paycheck make a ton of sense for them? Unless they get back a center than can drop Toews to #2, I don't see how they can get a return to help them compete now, and any futures return will be too late as Keith, Hossa, and Toews all age out.
  8. Oh, this is more than just BS, it's beyond BS. It's BBS!
  9. I'm not sure he does. Besides, long term, the ROI is franchise value. If you insist on Hammymathing (yes, I made it a verb) this, the alternative could be a net of $1.8M in cap space next year with Hodgson's rebate plus the lack of buyout cost. We could sign two Quinceys!
  10. I really don't think Melo is a good fit on that team. They already have LeBron and Kyrie dominating the ball, and as talented as Melo is, he's a ball-stopper on offense. He just ISOs all the time. On a team where the offense is built upon that, it's fine, but not when you have one better option and another equivalent option. Durant fit so well with Golden State because only Curry really needed to dominate the ball, and Thompson/Green are great defenders who still add value even if they're getting fewer touches. What they really need is to upgrade athletically, and add guys who can play both ends. Put differently, they need more versatility. Kyrie is a sieve defensively, and Love is mediocre at his best. Even LeBron had a poor defensive series because he had to expend so much energy offensively. Who other than him and Kyrie can reliably create their own shots off the dribble? Thompson is ass, Korver is pure cactch and shoot, Love is a post player who can shoot the 3, but has to play away from the basket too often to maximize his talents, Williams and Jefferson are old Shumpert is trash. They need an Iguodala-like option off the bench and another starter. Not sure they have the assets to do it, but Paul George would be perfect (I'd be willing to move Love in such a deal). I'd desperately try to shed the Thompson contract for cap space, because otherwise, they can't really add a free agent worth much. They're in a tough spot, but they were close to it being a 2-2 series, so maybe they don't have to add as much as is the conventional wisdom?
  11. If Pegula doesn't care about the real dollars, I don't see why you would. Secondly, your scenario is dependent upon the assumption we cannot sign Kyle Quincey for $1.5M unless we buy out Gorges. That need not be the case.
  12. Yes, Durant had more of an impact than Clemens. My underlying point is that the Warriors were homegrown, and had already won with that talent. It's not like their own talent failed and needed Durant to win. I don't think they'd have won in 5 sans Durant, but I think they'd still be the favorites. As a fan, I'm disappointed the series want as competitive as it would have been if they hadn't added Durant, but I don't think they're making it pointless to watch. San Antonio would have had a puncher's chance without the Kawhi injury, and they may add Chris Paul. The Cavs will add. I think it'll be more competitive next year. Sometimes, man, I worry about you. I did t think the veil could be any thinner on what he was getting at. :p
  13. Why are you unconcerned about $1.3M next season, but very concerned about $1.7M (the difference in cap between buying him out and burying him in Rochester)? Do you really think our cap situation is so bad that we can't afford a bottom of the barrel defenseman? Keep in mind, all of Eichel, Reinhart, and Kane, will be seeing raises if they're still here. Seems to me I'd much rather have extra cap space when that happens.
  14. Well, he was there before Laviolette. At the very least, he has learned under both Trotz and Laviolette, and hasn't stood in the way of progress--which was part of your tepid defense of Tocchet :p The PP is both worrisome and confounding. Though the value of point shots is the high in general, I can see the logic of looking at those blue liners versus the forwards (all due respect to Johansen and Forsberg) and thinking it'd be better to get the D more involved in shot generation. But at some point you'd like the coach to recognize it's not very good and shift so that, even if the D are still the primary generators, there not just flinging low percentage point shots. Agreed. Our PP was lethal...when it got set up in the zone. Getting that was oftentimes far more of a problem than it should have been.
  15. What I like about Housley (or dare I say, the concept of Housley) isn't that he made the defensemen there good per se, but that he recognized their strengths and allowed the players to play to them. It may seem a simple thing, but so many coaches fail to do this.
  16. The Warriors are just as homegrown. Curry, Thompson, and Green were all draft picks and developed. That core won a title, and set the record for regular season wins before losing the Finals in game 7. Yes, they added Durant this year, but is that really so much different than the Yankees adding Roger "head growth due to steroids" Clemens to keep the run going?
  17. I bet something like 80% of Preds fans are also Titans fans.
  18. Though I'd have no belief in Tocchet, I'm willing to give Botterill the benefit of the doubt--he conducted a thorough search, and interviewed all of the best candidates available (and I don't think they were token interviews). Having gone through this, if he still ends up at Tocchet, then let's roll.
  19. Wow, that's a nice haul for Vegas just to take a contract on.
  20. Don't worry, the disappointment will go away once she stops having expectations, which probably isn't too far away.
  21. It didn't kick in for me at all until the incessant Preds whining about the refs in the Cup. F 'em.
  22. I have a hard time feeling sorry about a ref error for a fan base that was on the winning side of the Music City Miracle. Yes, I'm old and bitter before my time!
  23. I agree, I just think waiting is the plan. Or hope it is, anyway.
