The only issue with this idea is that I don't think the Sabres want to take on the liability of allowing John to have surgery, or at least the surgery that he wants.

I voted no. I don't think a reasonable trade will be possible before John is healed, either after surgery, or without it. I think he will be traded before July 1, 2022, which is when (I think) his NMC kicks in.
