I don't have the numbers, but other than Steve Ott the chance of winning possession in the defensive zone on the draw was probably around 35% most nights. He was definitely moving it more this year than in the past.

I'm old. I'm skeptical. And I probably forget. And I'm not likely to compare a guy with 12 starts to one with 40. I've seen the league tear through the "next goalie" like yesterdays news given enough time. What are easily available goalies that you think can start 50 games? C'mon. This should be off the top of your head if it is easy. Make me feel better. I can't do it. But maybe it is my old tired thinking. My thinking is if it was easy to find that guy, everyone would have that guy. names? just a few? Who do we turn the keys over to? Where is this guy?

I think it is probably time to part. But finding the next guy isn't always a short process. Let alone a guy that can give 60 starts a year. Miller has been a workhorse. Over that stretch he's been consistent. Easy to replace? Nope. I forgot who told me, but I once I heard someone tell him from a scout that you are really not sure what you have in a goaltender until he's made 5000 professional saves. Until then, you are only gambling that the leagues won't figure him out. Once you reach 5000 there is a good chance that they can survive and adjust to shooters. Until then you are playing poker. There is always a chance Buffalo gets lucky and finds a guy as good as Miller or maybe even a Hasek. (which was just lucky) There is a better chance that there will be a parade of keepers that look good for a short while before getting solved, and the process is repeated.

Then what the hell have Philly, Colorado, Tampa, Toronto, Florida and Washington been thinking these years? Just for sport, make a list of goalies easily available that you would be comfortable starting 50 games a season. Help me see through this. In the meantime I will continue to think that this idea (not you, just the idea) is kinda dumb. 3rd goal was on him. No getting around that one. It was an epic gaff. As for the others goals, those probably hit the net on anybody. In short, I imagine that might be the last time we see Ryan Miller at home in blue and gold. I think his time is up. How do you replace him? Probably with a committee for the next 3 years.

Only need 6 goals in 6 minutes to win this in regulation. -
You're just gonna love the 5 year extension they give him.

Interesting that Lindy Ruff told fan590 that Myers poor play was mostly a conditioning issue from his ankle injury in Germany. Young defense almost always vacillate.

I liked him. Especially on the power play. He was very good against Philly in the playoffs, and played well for Team Canada in the World Championships. His offensive upside was intriguing. Great vision and passing so he could deal the puck. He also looked great the year before in Portland. Unfortunately he was always a little too skittish in his own zone. Not very physical. Seem to freeze a lot in the d-zone, or stopped moving his feet with the puck. He never seemed to find a natural partner on defense. Too bad.

How about a non-legend but former Sabre/Amerk .....Jason Botterill. He knows Darcy's MO......he knows the Amerks..so I would assume he already knows the market...he's AGM to Ray Shero. He's young....but as long as we are rebuilding. Why not? My other outside the box guy would be Marty Lapointe. I would love to poach Don Maloney from Phoenix as well. Let's see what he can do with a budget.

Ruhwedel and Pysyk are the kind of puck-movers that can take a ton of pressure off the back-check. I'm really impressed at where they are right now - they should make fine rookies next year. This translates to more speed on the entries from the forwards entering the offensive zone. A nice bonus is they are both pretty strong in the corners. Interesting to see the PP use the umbrella with Pysyk getting more time and Erhoff at the very top.

I think it is like a different level of experience. The playoffs are a different animal. It's a war of attrition. There is a price to be paid for every play in the playoffs. There is no way for a kid to know it unless they have experienced it IMO. -

I don't think it ever hurts the value of your roster. Does Gaustad get a first coming back without playoff experience?.....does Pominville? Playoff experience is always useful IMO, even if the series isn't won. -
It was the tale of two Erhoff's last night. Trying the kick pass down the wall ended up in the net. And being a second slow tying up Kelly ended up in the net. -2 But he was just beautiful at the offensive blue line last night. He really has been playing well. Fun to watch.

Good discussion. I like the guy, I like his hustle, I like his positioning. But......if I'm overhauling the roster I don't think he has a place except as a depth player. He's a guy that I see falling between lines. He's not top 6 material, and I don't think he's a shutdown center for the third, or a guy that is going to throw bodies in an energy role. In other words, I think he's closer to Matt Ellis than to a top 6 player. So if I'm overhauling the roster, I really don't see a need to keep him. I really think we are seeing his upside right now. He's already pretty close to his ceiling as terms of production. I'm okay with him on the roster, but penciling him in as an anchor for a line at the pivot. Yikes! I like his hustle but that's not building a winner in my book. (oh and he stinks at draws). If I'm the GM, I'm shopping but offering Porter the Matty Ellis role and I'm happy with the 2-way contract I gave him for next year at 537K.
