You can't deny that this is a tradeoff most teams would take. That was my point.

The rat did his job. Took stamkos off his game and out of the game. A good tradeoff for the Bruins.

I remember a time when a good rollicking game of hockey with big hits and beautiful end to end rushes brought the people out of their seats with no need for gimmicks other than an organist or some crazy dude hitting a drum.- 179 replies

It is the way of things grasshopper. Coaches, players, G.M.s have always pushed the boundaries of the rules to get an advantage since sport was invented. The N.H.L. is no different. This was a turnover of epic proportions. We were bound to sukc. The league has changed the rules to hinder teams from tanking to get a generational talent and certain G.M.s have pushed the boundaries further.

I won't deny Toms right. It looks cut and dry. I still don't think you can downplay the part hitting has over a seven game series. If you don't have the puck you knock the other guy off the puck to gain or regain possession or to cause a turnover. Takeaways or turnovers probably would rarely happen without some form of hit or threat of a hit. Teams use it as a tactic when they continually throw the puck into a certain D mans corner to wear him down in a 7 game series. Injuries over the length of a series can shorten a series and many of these come from blocked shots or hits. Blocking shots may save goals but it can cause injuries to your team.

I suppose its a mix of different elements and for some its more and for some its less. I just feel those aspects are important to success in the playoffs. Boston certainly comes to mind. As does L.A. but I do agree its not all you need.

Tom come on man. You actually believe what you're saying ? The part about possession is spot on but if you look at the teams you mentioned they all block as many shots as any other team that goes far in the post season and they all grind it out with timely hits as well. A war of attrition. If you're not willing to block shots and take as well as give hits you don't win the cup.

Who said anything about the Edmonton approach ? Obviously you surround said picks with the right complimentary pieces. But you knew that. ;)
-
Hitting and blocking shots wins playoff games. Show me a team that doesn't do this and I'll show you a team that won't make the playoffs.

I've layed it out but it goes over the heads. No use Liger , its a losing battle. For me it was always about getting the high end picks at the top of the draft. If we don't get McWhosit we'll still have the pieces in place to build a great team. That and the other additions I'm sure Murray is coveting will put us back in the game.

I had lost patience with the old regime and old core. The teardown had to happen and I was resigned to it. I have yet to lose patience for the process we are in. I look forward to the team building that will take place. I find it exciting. You guys are all wimps. Man up.

This convo kind of reminds me of the stupidity of vehicle names. Are we just running out of names for things ? Anything exciting happening around the N.H.L. ?

Steve Nash announces his retirement.

Ah. I see what he did there. Makes sense and it would be a great way to thumb his nose at the league.

Look and file it in the spank bank ?

I happen to think Pitbull is a crappy singer. I don't like his name or his music. He's hispanic but thats besides the point. I'm not a racist. I just don't like his music or his choice of names.

Its all Teds fault. The big meany. For all we know as fans Grigorenko floated through another practice. Anyone go to the morning skate ? It would be interesting to see all sides to this ' conspiracy ' and not just game action. For those that have made up their minds on Ted Nolan nothing will change the perception. I didn't watch the game I heard the audio so its hard to judge Grigs effort in 8 minutes of icetime. Did he do something noteworthy in the time he was given ? As I've mentioned before Nolan wants 100% effort in practice too so if Grigs went through the motions in the morning skate that may be a factor.
