Who knew that there was a World Whisky Day? Or that it happens to be today!

This day just took an interesting turn.

The story of Jon Cooper's path to the NHL is pretty interesting. Heard Joe Micheletti talking about it on the Fan yesterday. Winning the SC is pretty much all he has left to do.
Decided to look it up and even though the writer uses the phrase "could have went", it's still a good read.

I know you want to revise history to make a point but the whistles were out in '06. Defenders didn't dare impede anyone. Even in the playoffs. Everyone treaded lightly that year and then everything came apart in 06-07. Why do you think they Sabres tailed off? The team that performed in 05-06 couldn't match the physicality that the NHL let creep back in the next year. Then they became soft as butter once everything returned to status quo.
You can remember it any way you want, but I'm not the one rewriting history. I remember saying it then that they called the games differently in the playoffs those years. They may have called more than they do now but it wasn't even close to how they called it in the regular season. It's one of the reasons that I wasn't all that shocked by the outcomes or upset when we lost Drury and Briere. I really wasn't. Because of their size and style of play, I never thought they would be the cornerstones that led a team to a SC.
(I also don't think that if we played Edmonton it would have been the gimme that everyone here likes to believe so they can sleep at night)
-
I disagree. Go back and watch highlights from those playoffs. Nobody was touching anybody.
Not really sure what that proves. What about all the other rushes in that game that didn't lead to a goal?
Also, neither of those teams won the Stanley Cup that year. The bigger, more physical team won.

Has anyone suggested contracting the league by 3 teams?
-
Just curious -- why do you (and anyone else who supports this) think this would help? The point of the trapezoid, and I think it's been effective, is to prevent goalies from fishing the puck out of the corners on dump-ins and getting it either out of the zone or to defensemen -- i.e. the trapezoid benefits the forecheck.
Huh? This is exactly what happened in 2005-'06.
I wasn't very clear. I meant that even though they called it during the regular season those years, they stopped during the playoffs.
-
I think calling more interference penalties and increasing the size of the nets would help. No way they will shrink the pads out of supposed safety issues and you can't limit players based on size. I also like the idea of getting rid of the trapezoid and finding some way to reduce the number of offsides calls by not calling offsides once the team with the puck gets it past the red line.
Everyone keeps saying this, but it has never happened in the history of the league, even during the playoffs of the no-touch years, so I think this can be left off of the list of solutions.

There's a large difference between 2-1 games and an all-star game.
See my ideas... Mostly giving teams MORE options:
- Offsides legal either when the puck crosses the blue line and/or if the opposing team possesses the puck in the neutral zone.
- Larger nets
- No more trapezoid
- Defending player pits stick down first on all faceoffs
- Guaranteed half of power player regardless of whether or not you score. Or maybe a goal takes a minute off of a power play instead of nullifying it
- Faceoffs go to the offensive zone if an inadvertent whistle takes away a rush for the offensive team
- No more icing on the penalty kill
Sorry, missed those. I agree that those would help.
I still think that there is an evolution and this is just another part of it.
Goalies used to stand. Shooters figured it out.
Goalies went to butterfly. Shooters figured it out.
Goalies hugged the post with their vertical leg. Teams figured out to shoot low far side for rebounds.
Goalies hug the post with their down leg so they can get across the net easier. Teams figured out to change direction behind the net.
It's the offenses turn now
And I'm whole-heartedly against larger nets.

We are talking about deflated footballs. :wallbash:
No, we are talking about repeatedly trying to gain a competitive edge by cheating.
-
I hate new rules that say you can't now do something. What about focusing on the offense instead of the defenses?
How about a rule that says one offensive player can be offside when the puck crosses the blue line? Lots of rushes are stifled because of this. Maybe say they can be no deeper than the top of the circle.
Or maybe they are allowed to enter the zone once the puck crosses the red line.
-
Nothing. Just wait for the shooters to figure out this current evolution of the goaltenders.
I would also get rid of the trapezoid.

You're opportunity to come inside me this summer http://www.mclanestadium.com/event/mclane-stadium-tours/ …
Which is the awesome part, the stadium or the tweet?
-
Well, at least the NFL isn't a non-profit anymore...
I'm guessing that move is about some form of protection against all the concussion law suits to come?
-
I ####ing hate supercops. I wonder if they realize that "To Protect and Serve" applies to the people and not the police force.
-
So, we want to change the rules because of one team?
Now that that other team is no longer relevant, can we get rid of the trapezoid?
Hey, wait a minute,… maybe it's the trapezoid that has stifled offenses. With goalies not being able to play the puck, they can't, on occasion, force the play at one end anymore. It allows dump and chase from farther back in the zone.
-
Super catchy, too.
The superimposed hands at the beginning are fantastic.

I like this thread. Not sure I'm sold on Bylsma just yet, but I like this thread.
The name Disco Dan I pretty solid, though.
-
I'm actually shocked. A penalty against the Rangers in a game seven.
-
That is funking hilarious.
-
I'd rather the Bills be underdogs. It suits them much better.
Agreed, when was the last time this team did good when the league expected them to be haha
Screw that. I want to be favored going in to every game, then not only win every game, but cover.
-
That's a thing still? Everyone I know works 60+ hours a week.
They're doing it wrong.
-
I just hope that if we don't get Babcock, GMTM has been practicing his runner-up face since the draft.

Smells musky in here.
This post popped into my head while driving to work and I burst out laughing.

He posts and then disappears for 6 months. How is that any different from being banned?
But anyway, I don't blame the guy. When someone has been insulting you for years in a very public manner, most can only take so much? Professional? No, but I still can't blame anyone for snapping. I for one don't know why a sports discussion has to constantly turn to shredding the people who cover them. Whether it's ESPN hate, WGR hate, or Buffalo News hate, it gets stale really fast, yet it winds up being one of if not the most frequent topics here or any other board. These guys get paid to write about sports, they're not exactly at the peak of society's pecking order. Why do we care about them so much as to mention them constantly? I don't need to see a bunch of letters on a screen or a paper to change one bit of what goes through my mind when watching a game.
I don't get the hate either. I also haven't seen Ghost call Wawrow out (or really even mention his name) in years, except when these exchanges occur. I don't know why his panties are in a bunch. Maybe they duke it out over at TBD.
