  1. It felt soooo good to be on the ice again last night, after a couple of weeks off. We lost 6-1 in a division that is a little (a lot) over my ability. I ended up even, though, and scored the only goal :D . Not bad for the oldest guy on the ice. I may have the least skill on my team (I really do, and I'm fine with that), but I'm far from the worst hockey player.

    Today is a good day.

  2. The article in question was thoroughly debunked by much better analysis.

That said, regardless of how much it did or didn't matter on the field, I want the hammer dropped. The organization didn't cooperate fully with the investigation, Brady himself lied and stonewalled, and as Shrader said it's pretty obvious this wasn't a one time deal. There should be a hefty fine, draft pick penalties, and suspensions for both Belichick and Brady. I'm aware the report vindicates the Patriots' higher ups of direct involvement, but Sean Payton wasn't involved in bountygate and he still got suspended for a season because "ignorance is not an excuse." The league's premier franchise has shown zero respect for the integrity of the game and our collective intelligence and the harshest possible penalty should be doled out.

The hilarious part about this is that if they had just come out and admitted "yea we kinda messed with the balls" they probably get some lame fine and we never hear of it again. But no...lie, frustrate, deceive, publicly bloviate...as usual the cover-up is worse than the crime.

    link?

  3. Especially since the whole thing makes it very clear that this wasn't just a one time thing.  I don't know if they ever got to that point with spygate (thanks in part to the league not being very open about it).  Tom's been messing with balls for quite a while and these texts make that very clear.

And for those that don't think it's a big deal, there was some stat that someone read last year about fumbles lost, or something like that, that was so far below the league average that it looked odd. Maybe someone who is better than I in finding links like this could find it.

  4. That NYR/CAPS game last night is exactly the reason the NHL has a scoring problem.  The game winner made me want to  .

I was thinking the exact opposite. That game was awesome, one of the better games of the playoffs so far. And I keep reading "flukey goal" in headlines. How is the puck doing exactly what the shooter intended flukey? Guys make that shot all the time.

  5. Well considering we were talking about his defensive zone play, or at least I was, I am not really sure where you are going with this.

I'll say it again. Jack Eichel on several shifts in the defensive zone floated and was less aggressive towards the puck carrier.  Not a concern just an observation about his play.

    yep

  6. You needed to be watching. What you are suggesting is not at all what I was witnessing from Eichel. It wasn't letting the play develop. There were several times in the defensive end I remember thinking he was floating too much and needed to be more engaged.  It won't fly at the NHL level.

I've seen what you're seeing. Sometimes he glides toward the guy with the puck instead of skating toward him to engage him. Some guys can generate speed without picking up their feet, though, and I can't tell if that's what I'm seeing.

Sometimes I think that some guys who look like they are trying really hard just aren't very good skaters.

  7. Sheesh you sound like me. Only different is freeman hasn't pounced on you... Yet. :p

I'm actually heartened by this "bad draft" news. I want to go back and see how many of our previous drafts have been deemed realy good. It seems like it has been a lot of them, yet here we sit with no playoffs this millennia.

  8. I find this baffling.

I strongly disagree. Winning a face-off opportunity is often much more important than most one-one battles.  Why? Most one-on-one battles are not scoring opportunities.

Win a draw cleanly in the offensive zone, the coaching manual says, is a scoring opportunity.  All your skaters are already onside, you've all-ready won the zone. you already have a chance to find on open lane, it should result in a shot. This dynamic is amplified on special teams.

Win the draw in the defensive zone and you've thwarted an a scoring opportunity.

Most one-on-one hockey battles do not result in a shot as they are away from the puck.

Faceoffs in the end zones are much more important because that's where possession results in the highest percentage shots.

    But, but, but,... #fancystats.

  9. The point I was making about the Watkins' trade is they gave up the 19th pick in a draft that might not have had 19 first round worthy picks. Part of the GM job is knowing which year to acquire picks for and which year they are not as valuable. In the end, however, you are right. It comes down to how good Watkins turns out and what kind of impact he has on their team.

You are spot on with this. I still like the trade. I still think he will end up being the best of his class, by a lot.

I also don't really care about this draft as we did our team building in FA this year.

  10. Yup, you need to win the majority of battles...and you can do that without winning the majority of faceoffs. Faceoffs are no more important than any other battle that takes place during a game, yet they're tracked and put on a pedestal.

But with 6 seconds left on the clock and down by one goal, it may be the only battle you need to win in order to have a chance at winning the game.

  11. Why a doozy?

Revenue sharing is the correct term. That's the guts of the CBA.  Clubs have to raise revenues so the players get their contractual 50% split. The Sabres have a contractual obligation as a Club party to the CBA.

You imagine it is a money grab or that the Sabres can opt out. Really, the Sabres, from a players point of view,  have been reluctantly compliant with the Revenue Sharing Oversight Committee and are only doing their due diligence, forming a plan,  and satisfying their contractual requirements.

You keep saying this, but that is not what the CBA says, unless it's somewhere else. It says that clubs that fall below the 75% of league average have to come up with a plan to raise revenue. Those are two completely different things and since the Sabres didn't fall below that mark, there is nothing that says they have to raise ticket prices.
