There's significantly more than God's grace separating the Sabres from that fate. But don't let reality get in the way of trotting out a well-worn idiom.
That's what people keep telling me. I really hope it's true.
-
Not sure what you're driving at.
My youngest boy is 24 anyway... that ship has left.

Went upthread one too many posts when I hit reply.

Edmonton has finished, what? In the bottom 5, six of the last seven years.
I'd say they haven't turned much around since finishing DFL in 2009-10, 2010-11.
There but for the grace of God go the Buffalo Sabres.

It is not that Edmonton is "better at it" ...it is that they haven't succeeded at it.
We'll see who ends up better first.
As much as we all want to get on our high horse, they've had better hockey to watch, have been to a SCF more recently than us, and are further along in their tank than we are.

Draft position? Sure, EDM comes out on top. But draft position alone does not win Cups. The problem with EDM is that they are hanging onto their high picks. The Best Player Available in several of those picks was the same basic type of player (scoring forward) so now EDM has a glut of those but holes in other parts of their game (D and goalie). For all those high picks to do them any good they need to convert one or two of them to players that will fill the gaps in their team (i.e., trade). With the slightly worse picks the Sabres have had, they don't have to worry quite as much about selecting the Best Player Available and instead drafted to fill needs on the team, resulting in a better all-around team.
If I'm EDM I'm farming one or two of those past #1s for D, I think the Sabres might be able to participate.
If your youngest is a boy you should nickname him Tank.

I love how tanking is completely okay, even longed for, until it turns out that someone else is better at it.
-
That really is fantastic.

You aren't owed anything by any team you spend money on. Period. Buying a ticket is nothing more than obtaining a license to occupy that seat. Buying merchandise is nothing more than obtaining stuff in exchange for legal tender.
You think you have the power to demand that Murray dance like a monkey as you stated above? You're the one spending money on an inferior product. Who's dancing for whom?
GO SABRES!!!
They're not dancing for me. They are dancing for the NHL who decided this is the product it wants to sell.
When my boss tells me to dance, I do. I like to get paid.
-
Same here. Anyone who thinks that because they spend money on tickets, merchandise, etc., that they are OWED something by the team is delusional.
GO SABRES!!!
Yes because we all love to just give our money away.
This is entertainment. It think it was Neo that said what fascinating theater it was on Saturday. They get paid because we pay to watch. If he doesn't like it he has two options, build a winner or go manage a junior b team. He cam across as the spoiled kid that wanted both the pony and the go-kart for his birthday.
-
This sort of thinking resonates with me not at all.
and yet you spent the morning watching pressers and highlights.
-
Are you trying to argue that they drag GMs to the site and have it on TV as a tank-deterrent? If so, I couldn't disagree more.
No, but welcome to the NHL. That's the PROcess. You want to get payed millions to manage or play a game that I pay a considerable % of my income to play, then get up on stage and dance, monkey. If you don't like it, then build a winner. You built the 30th place team out of 30, you are lucky you don't get relegated down to the A. You get no say.
And all this because over some sour grapes that GMTM because he didn't get the toy he wanted.
-
I think the part of the process he doesn't like is being dragged up to Toronto for stupid dog-and-pony shows in consecutive years where he has to appear on TV as a loser.
Again, that is the PROcess. If you don't like it, then don't tank. That's what all this is about FFS! It's all to discourage teams from tanking. Every complaint that everyone and GMTM has had about the PROcess not working just makes it clearer and clearer to me that it is!
-
It was the best option and most logical option available to him. And he repeated on Saturday that he favors the worst team getting the top pick.
As the worst team, of course he does. But the PROcess is the PROcess, and he can complain about it all he wants, but he used the PROcess to it's fullest this year. That's why it was so important that the team he built finished last, so that when the PROcess worked, we would still end up with a great player.
People can be mad at who won, or angry that we lost, but the PROcess worked and we manipulated it to make sure that we gots ours. Murray's comments were a little off and he's nothing to complain about.
-
Well, if he gets what he wants, then he can better tolerate a process that he thinks is stupid. And if he doesn't get what he wants? Well -- we saw what came of that.
If he doesn't like the PROcess, then he shouldn't have tanked.

Spoonfed fan base takes what they are given with a smile.
I've been trying to figure out what this means and I got nothin'.
So anyone catch the draft lottery scandal? Where the guy pressed the button twice?
There is no scandal.
-
Listening to the presser that started the kerfluffle: JFC. The hot-take that TM was being unprofessional, saying stupid things, showing himself to be inept, or somehow insulting Eichel -- all stuff and nonsense. He's clearly not pleased with the pro-cess (gotta hit that "PRO," eh?) and made that clear a few times -- said his grumpiness was not about any player -- that he wanted to pick first because you always want to go first when you have the chance to do so.
Also, I did not hear him say that "disappointed for our fans" bit or likening it to being cut by a world junior team. Was that in the clip that WGR posted?
C'mon. There is no way that if the Sabres won the lottery he would have spent the whole PC complaining about the PROcess.
He wanted McDavid and was grumpy he didn't get him.
-
No but people are reacting to his unprofessionalism when dealing with not getting top pick...
Yes, that's true. And?
Any way you slice it, that WJ comment was just goofy, and worthy of some analysis by this board.
Nobody is saying he is a failure because he is picking second,... well, I mean,... except for maybe Murray himself.
-
So we tanked to ensure we can get one of the two top picks, and because we didn't win the lottery some fans call Murray a failure??? That makes zero sense. In fact, negative sense....less than zero.
tl;uir
I'm not sure a single person has said that, but carrion.
-
Bennett looking special :/
I thought the NHL said it was okay to hit people in the head behind the net.
-
Eichel already did. And Murray already came out and clarified his goofy statements from Saturday -- basically nailing it on the second try. So everyone's saying the right things today and we're looking good again.
Now the debate is whether or not I'm an awful person for pointing out that the popular new GM said some stupid stuff that made me question him for the first time, and standing by that.
Life is hard.
Oh, you're an awful person, just not because of this.
-
I don't think Miller would have lasted ten minutes in this game. Calgary is beating the crap out of Lack.
-
Are we still arguing whether or not GMTM said some borderline cuckoo bird shite? He did. He absolutely said some stuff that Eichel could have taken the wrong way. I would have, and I don't give a crap about what anyone says about me. Does it mean he can't build a team? We'll see.
And if Eichel can't put his big boy pants on and get over it then he isn't the player we hope he is anyway.
-
The system didn't work. No system that allows a team this many #1 picks is working. You can't just say it's working when it very obviously isn't.
It's working.
There, I just said it.

There is no screw up. Two balls come up all the time (teehee). There is a lock that only holds the first one in place and the other falls back down.
There really is nothing to see here.
