Are there major changes coming this summer and who will make them?
DarthEbriate replied to dudacek's topic in The Aud Club
I just don't think Pettersson is the best player they could add, by trade or by free agency. I think he'll have good seasons but his career best is already past and his solid value production days are another contract into the future. In between he'll be a Matt Duchene or a Ryan Johanson. Good players... but overpaid, and if you really overpaid them, then you'll be sorely disappointed. -

So... move Power or Samuelsson (or buy him out while he's so cheap). The finances will work. In 2 years, at the halfway point of Dahlin's contract, his percentage of the cap will be 9.69%, which is very close to what Hedman's cap percentage was when Tampa won their back-to-back Cups (9.66% with a $7.875M salary to 81.5 cap ceiling. After that there will be 4 more seasons where the cap could be even higher with expansion. The resources will be there. Now, whether Adams/Pegula can effectively put that cap to reasonable use for the rest of the roster, I'll agree with you there. But Dahlin making money isn't really a negative. The no one wins the Cup with a $10M/year salary days are long over; Eichel busted that. Then Bob did. And this year someone will do it again. -

2025 NHL Entry Draft Thread, Sabres Draft 9th
French Collection replied to LGR4GM's topic in The Aud Club
I was talking to a guy who attended many OHL games this year. He thought that O’Brien did not really stand out. Misa and Schaefer had many WOW moments and were usually the best players on the ice. Martin was like a dog on a bone, he was relentless. Martone was big and effective but lacked the wow factor. Nothing new to hear but this continues to reinforce my take on some of the top guys. -

Adams has ***** up as hard as any GM has ever ***** up, he is as complete and total a failure as any executive in the history of pro sports and somehow STILL KEPT HIS JOB. This is not a serious organization. - Yesterday

Nah, 'cause that implies Houston actually gets a team.
-
What about the Houston We Have a Problems.
-
My personal preference is the Houston Never Existeds.
-
Aero is also relevant to Houston. The space program was centered in Houston. I don’t care what they call them.

Not a bit. I don't expect anyone to agree with it, because who would want to, but I don't see the Sabres contending at any point in Dahlin's tenure here. -

I think a healthy Dahlin nets you much more substantial parts than a critically injured Eichel. Dahlin, to me, poses a dilemma. This team is basically only good when he's on the ice. They depend on him so much it's crippling them. What Dahlin brings by making everyone around him better isn't a nice little bonus, it's a necessity. The Sabres, as currently constituted, could not hope to compete without him. We all agree on that. But I think he's such a drain on resources that they will probably never be able to really compete with him either. Especially with all of the money they have committed to Power and Samuelsson. Something has to give or they're never going to be able to build a team. They'll have a collection of nice pieces, but it'll never get them anywhere. -
I only meant a player "like" Greig. We need an ***** in our line up. Sorry, Greenway is not that.

Take the full day. Screw the man. Also, always go to the bathroom on company time

No it won't. We literally have done this before. How does Alex Tuch, Peyton Krebs, a vet cap dump and a 1st turn around the franchise? The going rate is good roster player, good prospect, some bonus player, and a 1st rounder. That ain't turning around ***** when the only good defender is Dahlin. Awful idea. -
“But will they perform in the playoffs?” is a spit out your drink level hilarious question to ask as a sabres fan at this time, I agree. Just get there lay the first brick

True but far less risky than no serious move at all Ya Vegas was only missing a 1C but they still traded for their best player. And more importantly - they were missing a 1C re: being the cup favourite. You aren’t making an analogous comp here cause we are only looking for pieces to scratch 16/32. Add the best players you can -

Making the playoffs is a year over year enterprise The average time spent out of the playoffs is one year. Being “years away” is a job security sales tactic, im sort of surprised more don’t realize that by now. Long rebuilds aren’t actually a thing - that’s nhl ea sports GM mode fodder. The nhl is a professional league not developmental: no one should fall for that. The few and far between “decade long” rebuilds we’ve seen are the exceptions that prove the rule - another term that should be frankly more familiar they Sabres haven’t made the playoffs because they haven’t chosen to. They’ve yet to make it the priority. people get there’s an active conflict of interest with the fans, right? The organization hasn’t had the same goals trading Dahlin only helps if you trade him for better players. And it only helps even then if you don’t care about, ya know…..THE most precious resource known to mankind in Time -

ALL OVER the possibility of adding Robertson. Want nothing to do with Petterson. He MIGHT turn it around. But does anybody believe that if Adams is the guy that is expecting it and not, for examples's sake, a Zito that the bet will pan out? -
Whoops, I didn't expand on that enough. My bad. By full potential I meant -- when they drafted him if he had achieved his maximum homerun swing potential, maybe even grew another inch or two, and basically was a diamond in the rough. I agree: now his ceiling is a responsible 3W with an above-average shot, which can be a good player -- like an Evan Rodrigues (who floats up the lineup without any problems) and should never cost you that much in salary unless you sign him UFA the season after he wins a Cup and has several clutch moments and your team needs "winners" and "leadership".

Actually, they should consider it. Unless this team surprises us with a huge jump in production or they add some really compelling players, they are likely still several years away from even sniffing the playoffs. By the time they do, the window for them to win it with Dahlin here will be closing. He's a UFA summer of 2032, which isn't that long from now. The cost to keep him will be substantial. Probably too high to even entertain. Trading him now while he still has term could net a return that would reshape the franchise overnight... -

Pettersson is a damaged 1C (being shopped???) before the NMC kicks in on a ton of money and term. He is very much like Eichel pre-surgery in Buffalo. The difference is that Vegas was a bona fide Cup contender and was missing a 1C. The Sabres are a draft lottery that was a strong-run-down-the-stretch away from picking #4 overall instead of #9. Pettersson doesn't solve all their problems and his repaired knee means he'll likely never have the burst he once did. This guy is not "Taylor Hall makes us contenders!" level. For $11.6M and 7 more years, I need the player to be the best player on the team and set the tone night-in and night-out. I don't think EP is that guy. I'd rather use pick #9 on McQueen, Martin, Bear than use it + Norris to acquire Pettersson.
