It completely amazes my brain that the number one pick in the draft, Owen Power needs a right handed defenseman to be better. So freaking stupid, he should be making whomever plays with him better not the other way around. Complete lunacy.

Ekblad and Hedman got paired with veteran savvy players when they were young players. This is common practice. Myers got Tallinder (for only one season).

When Schaefer goes to the Islanders this season, he's going to skate with Pulock (30 RHD) or Mayfield (32 RHD) both of whom are on long-term contracts. He's going to be able to learn from them for years before he's expected to just carry a pairing on his own. The Isles aren't going to trade those two guys away and pair him with Jesse Pulkinen in their top-4 and say, "have fun."

One of the best and greatest values is that when you have a player drafted first overall they provide such a value to their pair you can expend assets elsewhere. What we did however is trade our best left winger and most valuable trade asset to supplement that pick’s pair

We only traded Riley Boychuk for Tallinder

Unfortunately the Sabres did this bass ackward. Kulikov, Montour, Labushkin all gone. They relied on Power to be better, he hasn't yet. They should have had a better plan.

I hope if Kesselring becomes Power’s partner, that the coaches don’t go easy on Power improving in the D zone. He still needs to play defense and learn to take the man.  He CANNOT continue to be an NHL defenseman and do nothing more than stick check in his own zone.  Unacceptable for any NHL blueliner, but crazy for one making ~8.5 mil per year.
