But prior to that, Canada didn't do particularly well since the early 60's because the tournament goes on during the SC playoffs. Canada's best players had better things to do. I'm going to go out on a limb and say it's not so much that Canadians are taking the tournament more seriously, but I think the Euros are taking this tournament less seriously. A lot of fringe NHLers and veteran club players make up the Euro teams. Rantanen played for Finland but no one else of that caliber joined him.
