I'd love to sign Asplund and let him and Nylander play a full season together in Rochester next year and let them learn the North American game together.

I named a few in my first post earlier today on this. Aho, Carlo, and Beauvillier are already helping their NHL teams this season and making an impact as 19 year olds. Larsson and Carlsson are big LHD that can skate and exactly what we're trying to figure out how to trade for seemingly all season. (Larsson would be in the NHL already except that he's with Anaheim and they're already stacked on defense.) And the key point is that none of this is hindsight. Everyone knew the 2015 draft was stacked leading up to it. It would have been a good draft to hold onto some picks and have extra -- especially since those players would be the same age as our franchise player.

That's true, but every draft is different. The 2015 draft was completely stacked with great prospects, with a few that are already full-time NHLers in 2016-2017. And all signs point to the 2017 draft being the opposite. I think just about everyone on this board felt the 2015 draft was loaded with talent going in and that there were late 1st round guys that could help a ton (guys a lot of us were reading about leading up to the draft because, seriously, what else was there to do during the Tank?). If you look at who was drafted 21st overall and after that year, there are a bunch of super strong prospects and their ETA is all 2017-2018 (if not already). We traded that pick and two years later Lehner gets a big "I for Incomplete" grade and probably a bridge deal this summer to give us more time to figure out if we even want him as a no.1. I'd much rather have another stud defenseman on par with Guhle on the way next year.

How many teams that drafted at the end of the first round in 2015 would trade us that player for Lehner right now? Would the Ducks give us Jacob Larsson for him? Would Columbus give us Gabriel Carlsson? Can we get Beauvillier from the Islanders? Or even early 2nd round picks like Aho or Carlo? (No.) The late first round pick we traded for Lehner would have probably netted us a really strong prospect that would either already be with the team now or be ready to join and help next year. And we would have been just fine with guys like Nilsson or Johnson this year and last. It was not a good trade.

Totally agree. And a great chance for Jack to play on national TV.

Eh, he's getting a bridge contract anyway. The expansion draft is Murray's big chance to show us how smart he is. He could pull a Browns and trade something to Las Vegas to convince them to take a bad contract off our hands (cough -- Bogo -- cough cough). He could also swing a trade with a team like Anaheim or Nashville that can't protect every defenseman they want to (which makes sense for us since we only have 2 guys worth protecting now). Fingers crossed that he's actually an intelligent hockey mind and not the fat, smartass blowhard who has no idea what he's doing that he comes off as.

But Murray is an expert at finding talent (as evidenced by Bogo, Kulikov, etc.).

It's also proof of how badly he's done building our defense and how desperate we are for help.

And by "Fire Bylsma crowd", you of course are referring to "Sabres fans."

The part that really hurts is that you know this guy was going to be an awesome defenseman for us just by virtue of the fact that Tim Murray was so excited about him.
