  1. "That's completely uncalled for, Burgundy. You know those rating systems are flawed. They don't take into account houses that have more than two television sets... and other things of that nature."
  2. We didn't trade up or down and we had... a player... fall to us... that we wanted?
  3. If I may, I'd like to tailor this a little, bolded.
  4. In case there was anyone who hadn't put it together yet, Botterill was Assistant GM of the Penguins when Jacque Martin was hired as an Assistant Coach by Head Coach Dan Bylsma in 2013. Martin was moved to Senior Adviser of Hockey Operations when Mike Johnston was hired as Head Coach in 2014 and then reassigned to Assistant Coach when Mike Sullivan was hired as Head Coach in 2015, where he's been since. Penguins won the Cup with Sullivan/Martin in 2016 and 2017. Botterill, then Pens' Associate GM, was hired to the Sabres as GM in 2017. They spent four years together in the Pens' front office. It's no surprise Botterill would give him at least some consideration.
  5. It's not the worst thing in the world if Jacque Martin goes back to Ottawa, because if he does go back to that nose-down slow motion plane crash, he must have really wanted to. Melnyk is dismantling that entire franchise, and anybody who sees that and thinks they gotta get in on that deserves the outcome. Now if it were some first-time NHL coach who needs exposure or a break, I get it. But an NHL coach with the better part of 17 seasons under their belt doesn't need that.
  6. Martin bio from his amateur hockey school in Ottawa: http://www.jacquesmartinhockey.com/staff/jacques-martin/ "Two time Stanley Cup winner Jacques Martin is currently an assistant coach with the Pittsburgh Penguins after being hired on August 9, 2013. Martin, 65, has spent over 30 years coaching at the NHL level, serving as head coach with St. Louis (1986-88), Ottawa (1995-2004), Florida (2005-08) and Montreal (2009-12) and as an assistant coach with Chicago (1988-90) and Quebec/Colorado (1990-95). Martin also worked a dual role as general manager of the Florida Panthers from 2006-08. Martin served as associate coach for two Canadian Olympic teams in 2002 and 2006. He helped lead the 2002 squad to a gold medal in Salt Lake City. He has also won a gold medal at both the 2004 World Cup as Associate Coach and 2007 World Championships as an Assistant General Manager in Moscow. Martin, a St-Pascal, Ontario native, was a Jack Adams Award recipient as NHL Coach of the Year with Ottawa in 1998-99, and was a finalist on three other occasions (1996-97; 2000-01; 2002-03). Martin’s NHL head coaching resume includes 1,294 games, 613 wins and 12 playoff appearances in 17 seasons. He ranks 12th all-time in games coached in NHL history. Before becoming an NHL coach, Martin spent three seasons coaching in the Ontario Hockey League – two as an assistant with Peterborough (1983-85) and one as head coach with Guelph (1985-86). He led Guelph to the Memorial Cup championship during his lone season and earned OHL Coach of the Year. Martin played college hockey at St. Lawrence University as a goaltender. Jacques has two daughters, a granddaughter and 3 grandsons."
  7. FWIW, no reason to worry... yet... ?
  8. Was I promoted to Real Life General Manager of the Buffalo Sabres from Armchair Internet Tom*****ery Dickarounder? Narrator: He was not.
  9. I'm still bitter about losing two game sevens against his smarmy dickbag face.
  10. If Barry Trotz were still in Nashville and lost in the 1st round, I would be going full Russian troll farm on Preds fan websites inciting his firing so the Sabres could hire him. Laviolette? Blehhh.
  11. TSN is parroting Burnside's note that the Sabres have "thrown Gronborg into the mix." https://www.tsn.ca/report-gronborg-a-candidate-for-sabres-1.1294376 Burnside: "...Gronborg is immensely popular in coaching circles and considered forward thinking. A source close to the Sabres indicated that, when they failed to land McLellan, Gronborg’s name was thrown into the mix, especially given the number of top young Swedes on the Sabres’ roster, including last June’s No. 1 overall pick Rasmus Dahlin. Would it be an outside the box hire for Buffalo GM Jason Botterill or any of the other GMs (assuming Edmonton gets a GM at some point) to hire from outside of North America? Sure. But it does seem like high time that coaches with different perspectives are considered as the NHL game continues to evolve."
  12. I usually use Vollman's numbers, which are a year or two old: Olofsson (63 points in 66 AHL games) is about 37 points. Asplund (41 points in 75 AHL games) is about 21 points.
  13. NHL equivalency from Liiga to NHL is 0.43. Arttuututtu Ruotteewasalianenesnen's 42 points in 59 Liiga games could be about 25 points in 82 NHL games.
  14. Message boards allow pretty much any content to propagate (and the visibility of that content is enhanced by constant posting), up to the point active moderation occurs. Other platforms with user vote-based visibility would likely crush trolls like this. Incidentally, this is a downside of only enabling positive reactions on this message board, although content visibility would be unaffected: unless mods get involved, trolls don't get discouraged easily without lengthy arguments from many users, if at all.
  15. There are lots and lots of Sabres fan transplants in SoCal; it'll be easy to find us. The closest games to Pendleton will be Anaheim (Honda Center) and Los Angeles (Staples Center). The Sabres fans usually pregame at JT Schmid's across the street from the Honda Center and in/around an area known as LA Live around Staples Center. Note that all three west coast games (and sometimes PHX) are usually played in the same compacted road trip for the Sabres, so it's sometimes tricky to go catch them all. LA and Anaheim are almost always played as a back-to-back with SJ played two or three days away from those games. Depending on where you're living, don't discount taking the fam to an SD Gulls or Ontario Reign game. If you or the wife like wine, there's no excuse not to do a weekend around Temecula. If you're a science nerd, beyond all the museums and zoos in town in LA and SD, go check out the Palomar Observatory.
  16. Lol, scorched earth.
  17. Dave Tippett, if available, would be a slam dunk.
  18. Even if that was the case, it would have been in McLellan's interest to solicit an offer to leverage the offer from the Kings. It's possible he didn't want to Babcock us, but it's more likely the Sabres had several candidates and they want to see someone else. Who's up next, AV?
  19. More years of missing playoffs is unacceptable. We have serious needs on the team right now. It is worthwhile to gauge interest form other teams to leverage this serious asset for roster players that fill those needs contribute to this team for years to come. The scouts know best about the types of players available at 7, and what the other plateaus look like in the first round. I would be fine with taking the pick, trading down, or trading for established young players that will help us.
  20. Agreed. Boo-urns for exploiting media access to his son during a scrum that should be about his son's experience and successes to get meaningless timetable info on his Dad.
  21. This is the beginning and end of this trash thread. According to the Census, the Buffalo-Cheektowaga Metropolitan Statistical Area is 50th in population, right behind economic powerhouse Birmingham-Hoover, AL. There is no Earthly reason why two out of the Big Four leagues still have teams here. There's no big corporate money. There's no giant TV deals. There's no economic incentive. Partnerships with Yancey's Fancy and TV ads for veinsveinsveins.com don't support a team. There are many, many larger markets with would-be owners that would pay for these teams, and in several instances, they almost have. There's only two reasons that these teams are still in Buffalo: 1) revenue sharing; 2) we have ownership that wants them here. So do all the mental gymnastics you want, add all the qualifying language to your arguments, and dream up some imaginary ownership group that keeps the teams in town, wants to win, spends, and hires the GMs you thought you wanted. The reason you're not reduced to watching the national broadcasts of the Los Angeles Bills and the Seattle Sabres is the actual, real-life owners. Should the current ownership continue to strive to produce a championship team in each league? Yes. Should the current ownership be subjected to reasonable scrutiny? Yes. Should the current ownership be "fired," likely resulting in the relocation of both franchises? Don't waste my ***** time.
