Tim Murray to other bottom-ten GMs at the trade deadline: "Oh, you think tanking is your ally. But you merely adopted the tank. I was born in it, moulded by it. I didn't see the victories until I was already a man, by then it was nothing to me but BLINDING! The losses betray you BECAUSE THEY BELONG TO ME! I will show you where I have made my home while preparing to bring justice. Then I will break you."

Some folks think that the players and coaching staff are locked in some sort of dilemma- try to win and botch the rebuild or try to lose and abandon, at least temporarily, the competitive sportsmanship of the game. But that's not the case. The players and coaches will -and should- try their hardest to win games. It's what they need to do to justify their jobs. It's what they need to do to entertain fans that spend their hard-earned salaries to go to home games. It's what they need to do maintain a non-toxic, competitive culture in the locker room. It's what they need to do to skate off the ice with their heads held high, knowing they tried. It's what sportsmen need to do. The players and coaches pushing their effort doesn't mean the tank is lost. It's not the players and coaches that will define the nature of this year's rebuild. Far and away, the person commanding the tank is Tim Murray. Murray has the power over the roster. He commands how much talent ends up on the ice each night. He will make the decision to throttle the available talent. And why shouldn't he? Every single player in this organization from top to bottom is effectively skating in a year-long tryout to get onto the team that follows this team. Murray should be allowed to, and probably will, take long looks at lots of different personnel arrangements on the active roster. And there are definitely going to be games when those arrangements don't translate into wins. Any move to keep players in Rochester (or Juniors) can be easily justified with the motivation of long term development. Additionally, he has the ability to gut a significant portion of the team at any point in time before the trade deadline, if he feels it's the best long term move for the organization. Stewart, Stafford, Mitchell, Kaleta, Meszaros, Benoit, Enroth, and Neuvirth are all UFAs. Some of those players, Murray has already attempted to trade. He could subtract some of those players for assets that have absolutely zero return on this year's team record, and whether that move would be made to tank, legitimately better the team, or both, it simply wouldn't matter.

1990 I give the benefit of the doubt on that one. 1985 I do not give the benefit of the doubt on that one.

My only guess is helmet technology. If this were 15 years ago, he'd likely be dead from concussive impact. If this were 25 years ago, he'd likely have been decapitated.

French F1 driver Jules Bianchi was in a brutal wreck Sunday at the Japanese Gran Prix (Suzuka). Going into one of the more challenging turns in the course, his car slid off the rainy, slippery track (likely aqua-planing) into a construction vehicle that was clearing a car that had over run the turn just one lap previous. He suffered severe head trauma and is fighting for his life. Crash footage in gif form. Same footage, slow motion.

Game discussion thread Pre Season GDT: Washington at Buffalo, 7 PM
IKnowPhysics replied to wjag's topic in The Aud Club
Welp, we're 2-2-1 in the preseason. With the two big wins over the high-and-mighty Hurricanes and Capitals, with each team only benching some of their game-changing players. We finished the 2013 preseason at 4-2-1 and look how well that turned out. Might as well write the whole season off as a winner. It's nice to see the win at home. And it's nice to see the kids develop and play well. But it's ultimately meaningless as a predictor of the regular season. Keep your helmets on. I fully expect this. He will cut the nuts off of this roster if it goes above .500. Stewart, Stafford, Mitchell, Kaleta, Meszaros, Benoit, Neuvirth, and Enroth are all in their last year of their contracts. How many of these players does he reckon are untouchable components of the next Sabres era? At any point this season, in a period of about 8 hours, he could shred this team. And he would be lauded for it, because it helped to maximize either the next draft or the next team. -

Check out some NHL rule changes for this year...
IKnowPhysics replied to spndnchz's topic in The Aud Club
Maybe there are situations where: 1) The puck is loose and is knocked over the goal line. 2) The ref blows the whistle because he loses sight of it. 3) The ref calls no-goal because he thought the puck crossed after the whistle blew. 4) Video review couldn't overturn/give guidance on that call previously (I don't think), but with the change, maybe now they can? No idea. Where's Brenda Shanaban video with the boring rule explanation? Where's the Kerry Frasier blog entry? -

Is it me, or does that open the door of players playing past the whistle? Seems like it opens a gray area of where the whistle has blown the play dead because the ref loses sight of the puck, but the puck can still cross the goal line and score based on video review. I thought we wanted the halt of play to be solely dictated by the whistle. Am I interpreting this wrong? -

I am Head Coach Nolan, your senior drill instructor. From now on you will speak only when spoken to, and the first and last words out of your filthy sewers will be “Sir”. Do you maggots understand that? If you ladies leave my arena, if you survive recruit training, you will be a weapon. You will be a minister of death praying for war. But until that day you are pukes. You are the lowest form of life on Earth. You are not even human ###### beings. You are nothing but unorganized grabastic pieces of amphibian ######! Because I am hard, you will not like me. But the more you hate me, the more you will learn. I am hard but I am fair. There is no racial bigotry here. Here you are all equally worthless. And my orders are to weed out all non-hackers who do not pack the gear to serve in my beloved Tank Corps. Do you maggots understand that?

Even if we're losing on the field, it'll still be one hell of a party, because we'll be winning at life.

Yeah, I'm not sure there's anyone that isn't looking forward to that atmosphere on Sunday. I think the whole place is going to burn down. I just hope they capture some of that on the TEEvee.

By the way, feel free to celebrate the new ownership in this thread. PA doesn't post in this thread and it's possible he doesn't read it. The other thread has turn into the usual shitshow.
