GM Tim Murray - Time for a serious conversation
Scottysabres replied to Scottysabres's topic in The Aud Club
I'm not so sure on that. Afterall, it was prior to the 2014 draft when Tim Murray said a rebuild doesn't have to take 5+ years. If done right, it could be done in 3 year. Well, here we are approaching 3 years, the current situation of the team and the comments he made aren't lining up. He appears to be in over his head when assessing the moved he did make to attempt to expedite the time frame. What is really concerning is some of the payments made on trade deals in that effort. -

Equity is the long view, or long-term return. He doesn't plan to sell the team and has stated it will be turned over to his daughter. I am sure that tradition will continue long after I've left this world. The write offs are not less than 70%. Those losses tie in to a multi-billion dollar company, PS&E which is the parent company of both the Sabres and Bills. As such those tax write offs become substantially more valuable at the parent corporation level on both the state and federal level. For example, I'm aware of a 650 million dollar corporation that got to write off 88% of a 102 million dollar capitol loss. Political capitol is the ability to effectively move future endeavors forward with an ease not met by other entities. If you believe it does not exist, and I'm not saying you do, but if that is the case, I know first hand that it does exist. As for pointing out the expanded fan base, many Buffalo expats become successful in other parts of the nation, but the inclusion of them was to point out areas such ad south and central Florida or Phoenix hold decent size expats that still spend on the team for merchandise. I didn't state he was planning on turning the Sabres in to a cash cow. What I did say was the expenditures being touted aren't always as large as they appear. -

nfreeman, you asked me in another thread if I had thought Terry Pegula made money off of the Sabres. Would you be surprised if I said yes? But others point out he's infused 100's of millions. I counter with a simple fact, and no matter how anyone attempts to side-step it, it is a fact. And that fact is this, every penny Pegula has spent falls in to 1 of 3 categories, all profitable. Equity, direct stake in a brand or physical location that appreciates over time for various reasons......check Write offs, all that cash he expended for contract buyouts, firings, etc. etc. Those are worth more than the money spent. Political capitol, when your playing at the level Pegula is where an entire regions fan base (the Buffalo Sabres and the Buffalo Bills in this case) which has a great deal of it spread nationally puts an owner of those assets in a position to move things beyond the local entertainment seen sports wise. It opens up many other venues. And while I understand he has done this from the beginning as a passion, let's not be pretentious enough to believe it's an Oprah car give away to the audience, look at it for what it is, more like a Catholic Charity, its passion and goal are well intentioned, but their are, how shall we say it delicately?, administrative costs. There is always a method behind the madness.......even philanthropy. -

That's 18.64 aav or 25.534247% of the salary cap if it stays flat at 73 mil ad projected. Your right, that is disgusting. -
Deadline Nearly Here! What is GMTM going to do?
Scottysabres replied to GASabresIUFAN's topic in The Aud Club
Your correct. It's looking more and more like the same ole' same ole'. So many have said it over my 46 years on this earth. And so many more will continue to say it.........it's Buffalo's sports mantra............. "There's Always Next Year" Ssshhhhhhhhhh........I think I here Terry whispering that under a low muffled chuckle as he saunters into his Bank with that bag of gate receipts.......sssshhhhhhh -

Maybe, or it could signal to them what they are most likely already aware of. And that is further changes are coming. At this point and time in their careers, I'm positive the players on this roster are cognizant of the fact that the players on their current roster are not all going to be here long term. And I'm more than positive they know situation currently, they see the standings. When you have team mates calling out problems, they are more than well aware. If your telling me that "atmosphere" is healthy or has room for significant enough improvement to alter the "culture of losing" plainly developing this season.....well, let's just call me skeptical that some time and magic pixy dust is going to change that. -

While I agree with you in so far as the team jump and what I would surmise is a temporary leveling off, I don't agree with your assessment on asset management by Murray. If he could have gotten something, he should have taken it for Kulikov and Franson. Afterall, it's not like either of them are difference makers, and hey, maybe going to a contender or playoff bound team would have interested them, even as depth guys. But to get nothing, knowing the playoffs are not a reality is just poor asset management for UFA's. As for the pieces not fitting, your absolutely correct. That, once again is on Tim Murray. There is a real disconnect in talent acquisition for this team when it comes to "fit". Keeping Kane, and keeping him with Eichel, isn't maximizing Eichel's potential, it's actually hurting his goal production. There is much more, to much to list. But this deadline was a chance to start to clear the table of useless clutter while getting a couple of edible crumbs. Dissapointed in the organization to date overall, I'm hoping the off season changes that, but Murray leading the way that little bit of hope I have isn't growing in confidence. -

Agreed. Trades will be coming in until 5 or so I'd guess. One thing I have noticed, an increase of AHL addressing by GM's -
Boston in on kulikov
-
Yep. Sounds about right. Although, I've been watching Anaheim since the start of the new year, Joshua benefits from his pairing partner.
-
These prices are all over the place. Vanek 50% retained for a 3rd and warm body really was shocking
-
Vane to Florida for a 3rd.
-
Even though Duclair is a RH RW I'd like to see Buffalo bring him in. He and Reinhart played together at the WJC? It affords flexibility.
-
I think many are right, kuli and Franson.....then the off season

Oops, my bad lol First thing that popped up on google search for rumors though

Martin Biron @MartyBrion Oh boy, I am being told that maybe there is a close door meeting happening between Tim Murray and two players prior to practice starting https://mobile.twitter.com/MartyBrion/status/836963302869778433?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw

:D I don't care if the trade calls for the Sabres come in after 3pm. As long as they come in. My last great hope is Bob Murray and the Ducks when it comes to Kane. With their core of Getzlaf, Perry and Kesler heading to their mid 30's, an in prime years gritty, fast, scoring LW'er with a year left on a contract that could be up to 50% retained should have more than raised an eyebrow of Bob Murray who is watching as opponents both in the western as well as eastern conference stock up in an arms race where a player such as Evander Kane can make an impact. Equally enticing for Bob Murray should he have to move a D piece in such a deal is Franson, a UFA RHD, thereby giving more leverage to offer up a mid prospect LH shot like Nick Richie to add an additional LW piece like Foligno and a RW future like Baptiste or Bailey, a position Buffalo is well stocked in. There is a real opportunity for a larger deal here that could be beneficial to both clubs given where they are at in their quest for the Cup. Anaheim's window is closing. The iron is hot. Is Tim Murray interested in components from Anaheim? He should be.
-
I'm assuming we are waiting for the 12pm waiver wire to end so Pittsburgh's Fehr is off the roster, opening the spot for Kulikov and ?
-
Nylander won't be ready next season. Baptiste and Bailey will be up fulltime however. As for Guhle, it would be a waste of an opportunity if we had to bring him up to early. I'd prefer he start the season in Rochester.

Scottysabres replied to Scottysabres's topic in The Aud Club
I look at it from a positional view. Meaning RW (right handed shot, speed and/or power with finish) appears balanced when you look at Okposo, Bailey, Baptiste, Fasching and Nylander. LW however is a big ? It should be addressed for sure. Defense is just a straight out disaster up and down the pipeline. Goaltending is suspect. -

So, are we just beginning the assessment of the Murray assessment? Or, are we awaiting for some miracle deadline and off season before passing initial judgment? Because I have a few choice words for the situation given the assets squandered we could have used to at least build some successful or potential successful defensive depth......starting with the 2015 draft, where picks were squandered. -
