well, they're certainly not getting protected usage when they're out there. they have a defensive zone start % of about 65%.

The "fourth line" is Sheary/Casey/Vesey.   Our third line (GLO) is utilized correctly (IMHO) with a 65% D-zone start.

The historical clips they are sprinkling into the broadcasts are great. Last night they played a Jim Lorentz TV call of an Alexander Mogilny goal five seconds into a game in Toronto (!). Some might forget Jim was pressed into play by play duty a number of times over the years. It happened one night in the early 80s when Rick got sick during a Canadiens game at the Aud and had to go home. Then Jim did at least one game after that while Rick recuperated. Jim also stepped in when Rick had voice/throat problems in 1993. I think it was a game in Hamilton that Rick had to excuse himself from.

But the reason he was calling this Leafs game in December 1991 is that Ted Darling had been pulled off the air after some erratic performances. I'm not sure by then they knew exactly what was wrong with Ted, but eventually it was discovered he had Pick's Disease, a degenerative brain disorder.

Jim was very good at play by play, and of course he is indisputably the best color analyst the team has ever had. And he killed a bat one time. An unforgettable figure in team history. I hope the fish are biting for him.

Miss his presence in the broadcast booth regularly.

    • Since he made his NHL debut on March 28, 2019 vs. Detroit, no NHL player has scored more power-play goals than Olofsson’s six in 11 games played. He has tied an NHL record by becoming the fourth player in NHL history to score each of his first four career goals with a man advantage, joining Craig Norwich, Sylvain Turgeon and Jeff Norton.

According to NHL’s On the Fly, Jack has 8 PP goals since March 28 making him first. Tied for second are Olofsson and Dahlin with 7 each.  Impressive stat.

    *Usage of the “third line”.

*Protected usage of the “fourth line”.   Not playing last 8 minutes of our close games is a good call.
*two D-man (including Risto) on the 2nd PP.  Although this speaks to the lack of depth with our forwards.  It’s a different look and I like it.

    Dislike:

    * Vlad on the second line.  Yes better than last year but an offensive liability.  He has zero points while Skinner and MoJo have 4 each.  Too much TOI each night.
*Vesey playing with first line in lieu of Olafsson.   Too conservative.  Not like Jimmy is some kind of Defensive wizard.  A good defense might be a good offense.  Score or possession will protect your lead.

    ambivalent

*Ristos minutes and 5v5 play.  He was a -10 in October last year with five points (PP#1).  So far he has only one point and a -1, with similar minutes/usage,  so better?  Smarter people than I will need to explain why it’s better or worse.

Bogosian simply isn't returning. They don't have the cap space for him and likely he will just stay on long term IR to finish out his days as a Sabre.

According to Capfreindly he never has been on LTIR, just IR.  Only Hunwick is on LTIR.

    2 hours ago, Brawndo said:

He’s actually on regular IR along with Montour, so his salary counts against the cap right now. If they need the space for a trade, I imagine he will be moved to LTIR at that time.

    Why do we even try?

I don’t want James Neal or jankowski. We need top 6 forwards. We have lots of 3rd and 4th liners.

Pretty sure James Neal is a top 6 guy.   Could have been had for a song.   Just needed the right situation.   I’d be happy with him playing RW on the top line and slide Sam the second, and of course Vlad would have been moved in the deal, so the cap is a wash.

    Does anyone agree with this?

Nope. A giant chasm of talent between Sam and Vlad.   Sobotka has been an absolute drag on the second line.  I’m still convinced Tage will be a late season call up and get moved to the second line.   He played probably his best game Friday and was still a non-factor in the O-zone.  His open shot in the third was weak sauce.  MoJo and Skinner have had some good shifts together and I like their chemistry but not playing better than the first line.

  9. 1 hour ago, Zamboni said:

If you DON’T sign them, they continue to play and develop in the league that you drafted them from, whether the CHL, USA (which I guess is college), or European countries.

If you DO sign them, they will play on your AHL team if sent down from the NHL squad, unless..

    1. They are under 20 AND
    2. Drafted out of the CHL

In that case, they’ll return to their CHL team if you demote them from the NHL roster.

Any unsigned player can be signed to a contract mid-year and will immediately be assigned to your NHL or AHL (if eligible, see above re: CHL) team.

AHL players can be recalled and returned at any time (though some require waivers when being returned). CHL players must remain in the CHL for the remainder of the season once sent down.

Keeping a CHL-eligible player in the NHL for 10 or more games counts as year 1 of his 3-year entry level contract. Keeping him for 9 or fewer will not, and he will still have 3 years left the following season.

NHL contract rules state that a CHL player may play in the NHL if they make the team, but if they get sent down before age 20, they will get sent all the way back to junior, and not your AHL squad.

Also, any player can participate in 9 regular season NHL games before it counting as a year off the contract. So with that, your CHL players will 'slide' a year. This also applies for players who play their first season as a Professional in the AHL.

So you can get 4 years out of a players ELC if you let them slide and play a year in the AHL before moving up. This rule does not apply for players who were signed and were sent back to CHL, as they have already had a slide.

^  found this elsewhere and it seems pretty straightforward.

Your moniker says Third liner, but that is some second line shite right there.   Thanks.

p.s. If Sabrespace calls you a third liner, are you really a fourth liner, and should you be posting after the second period?   Especially if we have a lead.

Outside of goal I like our lineup better, especially on D.  Talent wise, we are also close upfront.  The top lines are similar.  I like MoJo and Skinner over Trocheck and his wingers, although Trocheck is the way better center.

@Broken Ankles I wouldn’t mind seeing a similar chart in the Sabres roster. Thanks in advance.

No Changes to the Sabres Line up, which is why I did not post.  In fact sadly the people at Daily Faceoff are still miss reporting the lines, so please replace FL3 with FL4 and vice versa.

I'm hoping Kruger matches Larsson against Trocheck.

  11. Hoffman moving up to the first line and Weeger to the first pairing of D.

"I think Hoff's gotten off to a real good start," Quenneville said. "Trying to move it around to get balance… There's some offense in all the groups, but we need the top group to have the puck more and play in the offensive zone a little bit more."
