what if, by luck or injuries or whatever, The St. Louis Blues already have? how awesome would that be?

I just thought of something, every year under this playoff/draft system, the Eastern Conference is going to get 33% more lottery players than the West (8 east vs 6 west) Will this eventually result in a talent disparity?

That would be awesome! That's why I really want the blues to make it to the conference finals so we get the first but then miller doesn't sign there. It is very unlikely they end up in a lottery position but the odds slightly increase if miller signs elsewhere.

  2. That's me right there. Having gotten in a position to get NHL center ice this year (I live in Maryland), I decided after baseball season to get back into hockey after a very long time of not having followed the Sabres. My timing could have been better, but overall it has been highly enjoyable. There are some good story lines on the team, and hockey is just awesome regardless.

Welcome back man. Honestly, in a sick way I've enjoyed this season more then the last couple. I would much rather they win but the off ice stuff an trades have really kept me going. Plus I was so pissed last year when they screwed up the tank by going 8 and 4 to end the season. It's not so stressful cheering for the tank this year.

Wait a minute, i never said Ekblad for Connor alone. I said "bait." Clearly it would also be the Sabres 2015 1st and maybe St. Louis' and NYI's first rounders. Just an idea and not nuts when you consider the differnce between Ekblad and Bennett or SR.

The 2014 draft is weak. And if the goal is to tank and get Connor, and when there might be expansion in 2015 (changing draft orders), you need to think outside the box.

Sorry man but it is nuts. Nobody is trading out of taking Connor mcdavid. Nobody.

  4. Last game. I think I may have missed maybe 1 or 2 games all season due to work or prior commitments. My wife calls me a glutton for punishment. I suppose for someone who isn't a diehard like her its difficult to understand.

My wife always says that atleast nobody can say you jumped on the bandwagon when they get good again. I remember someone whom I barely knew say that to me in 2005 and my head almost exploded.

  5. Who in their right mind will give someone a top 5 pick without trying for a whole season to improve the team. I would be very happy to take their pick this year as next year I think Snow will try to make as many moves as possible so that we don't land a top pick.

Dude I'm sure he's going to try and make the team better if he defers the selection to next season. However, if he realistically realizes that it is unlikely he can make the team substantially better and there is a high probability he finishes in the bottom 10 next season he would be doing his franchise a huge disservice by not giving the Sabres the selection in what is considered by all experts to be a weaker draft. Of course he will try to improve them but we've stated before a) Snow is an idiot b) the owner doesn't want to spend money and c) nobody wants to play on the Island.

  6. That is most likely what will happen. If the Islanders draft 4th or 5th overall, they will defer to next year. At 4th they could take Dal Colle who could slot in immediately on the wing with Okposo and Tavares. They have Strome at center, with Reinhart, Pulock, and Pokka on defense. All 4 of those players could conceivably be wearing Orange next year.

If I were the Islanders and seeing the amount of talent they could ice next year, I would defer. I don't think their defense will be as bad, I think their forwards will be better, and I think their goaltending could be fixed in the offseason. Not saying they will suddenly be a playoff team but it is conceivable. I honestly don't think they will finish in 26th again.

If the Isles think their big improvement comes from icing a pile of rookies next season than tank on my friends. We all saw how that worked out for the Sabres early in the season.....

They had Moulson/Vanek score 23 goals this year and lost them for nothing that will help next year.

Tavares will be coming back from a significant injury.

Okposo will not have the monster season he's having this year again, he will regress to his average.

They have a TON of offensive issues to deal with next year that adding one solid forward is not going to help.

They also have almost $44M already committed for next year, plus Yashin, plus DiPietro. Wang isn't going to open the coffers much past the floor. They don't have the resources to improve this team enough to finish outside the bottom 8 next year.

Bingo. As I said, let them defer.

It's one thing Snow thinking he can make his team better and another him actually accomplishing this.

  7. I would be shocked if Snow gives us his pick this year! I still think he tries to bring in as many UFA's as possible in the summer so that we don't pick in the top 10 next year .

Anything short of first overall and I really hope we do get their 2015 pick. The thought of Snow and the Isles signing a bunch of UFA's based on Snow's proven track record of being inept, the owners proven track record of being cheap and nobody wanting to play there is comical. If you mean bring in as many UFA's as possible you mean maybe 1 middling player then sure. As others have said, this is an average UFA offseason and there is no draw to go to the Isles (especially if the cap goes up substantially and give better teams have more opportunity to be active this summer).

  8. I have never believed the Sabres plan was to "tank" until they realized it was inevitable,

The Draft Lottery was designed in part to counter the perception that teams can lose on purpose and be rewarded. If that is the NHL's intent they should address it fully.

    A) have a true Draft Lottery where all 14 non playoff teams have their draft position drawn at random. .

    B) have a weighted lottery where a teams chances are based on victories. 1 ball per win.

    C) have a tourney to determine the draft order. This is my preference where the 14 non-playoff teams play in a single game elimination tournament to determine the draft order.

Although this is great in theory as it would create some real excitment for the non playoff teams, I think there are several negative unintentional consequences of this idea.

Firstly, what would happen with a team like the Islanders? Say there was no condition and Buffalo has their first this year or they defer and we have it for sure next season and the Isles miss the playoffs? There is a real incentive to not even enter the tourney or just throw the games. So if that's the case, teams won't even trade first round picks and those are usually included in the majority of big trades. Secondly, I think trade deadline day would become a very dull day. If the Sabres still want to win that post season lottery tourney they would be more inclined to hold onto buys like Miller and Ott to try and win the tournament which would prove for a very boring deadline (which is proven time and again that the media and fans love that day). To me, alot of excitment comes from trades and you would kill somewhere in the neighbourhood of 90% of all deals in my opinion if we went to this system. I am strongly in favour of saying no to option C.

  9. @SabresPR

The #Sabres have recalled goaltender Matt Hackett from the Rochester Americans of the American Hockey League (AHL).

Oh this road trip is going to get interesting. I'm very pro tank but with us missing arguably our best forward in Girgs, our best dman in Myers and now going with 2 AHL goalies this could get real ugly. I know it's ugly now but damn if we blow the tank at this point then we really are cursed.

  10. If they were to adopt the five-year plan for the lottery odds then we would have to finish 41 points below Edmonton between now and the end of next season to get the best odds in the lottery. I don't think five years is a fair shot. Maybe three years.

But even that ignores the fact that sometimes you lose the face of your franchise. Sometimes they retire and that changes everything, so considering anything more than the single year is unfair.

Ya I would be more inclined to go with 3 as well. Alot can change over 5 years but I think 3 years would be fair.

  11. I'm not happy about the change because I'd rather have a shot at McDavid or an automatic Eichel than a little bit more of a chance at McDavid or a 6th overall pick but it's better than nothing

Ya I agree that I hope this does not change. However, the way I read it it's not McDavid or 6th overall. We would have a % chance at McDavid and then a higher % chance at the #2 pick and if we didn't win that we would have an even higher % chance at #3 and so on. Therefore we could pick no lower than 6th (assuming we finish last) but have a shot at 1-5. I think the biggest way to stop teams from tanking yet give an advantage to the worst teams is their idea on having the avg. number of points over a 5 or even 3 year horizon count.

  12. Just another reason why I do not want NYI to defer that pick they owe us until next year. Unfortunatetly, with news of this, NYI is much more likely to use the pick this year.

It goes both ways though. We all think the Isles will suck next year but if they add a few guys in the offseason then they may end up somewhere in the 5 to 15 worst record. In that case, the odds of them winning a top 3 or 5 lottery draw would actually improve when compared to this years odds (if I read it correctly). Also, I'm assuming the Isles have not had a great record over the previous 5 years if they are using that metric.

  13.

I have the expectation of being entertained. I knew they'd suck. This team is not even entertaining. I pay to see a team that's at least going to compete. This team doesn't. It plays 30 games for new coaches and that's it. (And I freaking love Nolan, by the way, so I don't want to hear any Ruff ######.)

And let's all spare ourselves the "are you not entertained" video, too, ok?

Feel free to cancel your seasons anytime. The blue and gold club wait list is already way to ###### long.

  14. Well, at least the Raptors look pretty good right now to be the 3 seed in the East, which doesn't mean a whole lot except that they will be off that list.

Hahahha, ya this is true. I'm not expecting much from them come playoff time but I haven't had a team I cheer for make the playoffs in all four sports since the Sabres nearly five years ago so it will be a nice change.....

We are lucky as Sabres fans to even have the tank option, for the soft hockey markets an outright tank is completely out of the question. Can you imagine if the Canes decided to be brutal on purpose? They have enough problems getting 10k people into their barn as a middling team.

    I like this point.

Sabres actually only have a four year drought currently. About to be five.

    Close enough lol.

  15. In the NHL only three teams have playoff droughts of five seasons or longer.

    The NFL has eight.

The NBA five but uses a lottery draft system.

The MLB has nine (including two over 20).

Not saying that's 100% proof, but that's part of it.

All of the sports teams I cheer for in each of the leagues mentioned are on that list (Sabres, Bills, Raptors, Blue Jays).  Why God?? Why?!?!
