  1. It's widely reported to be June 1, but I don't know what source(s) reports are based on.

    This lottery show sounds stupid.

It actually is pretty stupid. I'll watch only because we have a shot at the 1st pick. I watched last year and they just held a card and counted down right from 14 all the way down to 1. The only surprise was seeing the Colorado Florida switch at the end. What if they start with 14 and it ends up showing Nashville? Then there's not mutch of a countdown, we already know Washington had to have won it. Kind of dumb. I wish they showed the balls all bouncing around and them select the winner. Then use the other 25 minutes to analyze the top players and maybe what teams may do now that the draft order is set.

Six times in the 19 NHL lottery's has the team that finished with the worst record been awarded the 1st pick. Being the worst obviously is no guarantee.

So it makes sense we win it this year then. That would mean 5 of 20 would have won thus 25% which the odds are.

  2. I don't see how any GM could give up a top-5 pick under these circumstances. Doing so would be telling the fans that you expect to be just as bad or worse the following year.

Plus the probability of any team, regardless of record, landing McDavid is at best 25% (assuming no team has multiple lottery picks). I think the Isles use the pick this year on Dal Colle or one of the top European prospects.

That's what the Sabres have been telling us for two years now. What was the phrase, something about patience?

I think this is really going to depend on the ownership issue.

I don't think Wang is going to make any big moves, like firing the coach and GM until they are sold to a new owner.

If a new owner is buying Wangs majority share soon, he may feel that they should stay until the new majority owner has a chance to make the move for themselves.

For all we know a move could happen soon and Snow is gone before the draft.

Let's hope that is the plan and they make a decision in July. Talk about a major distraction when they are trying to sign this 'great goaltender'. (The great goaltender part is not directed at you).

  3. Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't there conditions on acquiring the Blues 1st rounder this year? I thought that if the Blues give their 1st to the Sabres (conditions are met) this year then the Sabres have to give the Blues their own 2nd and 3rd this year. In essence the Sabres might get the 26th pick but have to relinquish the 31st and 61st. So the Sabres would move up only 5 slots and still have to give up their 3rd (61st).

If this is correct, it sounds like a good deal for the Blues.

No, that's what I thought at first too. I believe it's the Wild's second round pick.

I got Buffalo 4 straight times to start the simulator. Got Florida on my 5th try.

  4. 1st the Isles keep the pick

5th the Isles keep the pick

6th the pick goes to the Sabres

The top 5 seems concensus, who would we go after with the 6th overall? I was really hoping the Sabres could have pulled off the win last night to not have a chance of falling into this predicament.

  5. Hockey fans are knowledgable people. I'm sure many diehard isles fans (isn't that all they have left) realize the situation. Many have heard about next years draft and I'm sure their talk radio shows have discussed this situation. I doubt many would think that by giving up the pick this year is management saying they will be much worse next year. With the state of the isles as a middling team most must know tht if they miss the playoffs you have a shot to win the lottery. Plus with the rumours of possibly changing the system next year I would not want to give up my lottery ball for a generational talent, especially if their pick ends up being 6th.

  6. Flames now down 4 0 so it looks like the isles will pick 5th if they don't win the lottery. Dal colle has been the near consensus 5th overall ranked player. From what I've seen from him in oshawa I think he will be a good player. He is a big yet skinny kid with an unbelievable release to his shot. He had a great start to the playoffs but has been quiet the last two or three games. Will be interesting to see what the isles do.

  7. You've got Philly and Chicago at home, but it should be NY and St. Louis.

Ok I was very confused for a second. I know the blues have not been great down the stretch but I thought they had home ice. Man that's going to be a great series. Not sure the blues even make it out of the first round and therefore we need miller signing before the draft to end up with that late first.

  8. The stuff you quoted will be all the more reason for free agents to avoid the Islanders. There's already the questions revolving around the move to Brooklyn. Now we have a potentially unstable ownership situation where you don't know who you're playing for from one day to the next. Mix in their long-term track record of failure and the whole thing continues to look like a trainwreck. There won't be any quick free agent based turn around for them this offseason. They'll continue to be the same old Islanders next season.

    Good points.

  9. you don't give a way a top 5 pick no matter how much better or worse off a draft class is.

Any of the top 5 you pick will slot in right after next years top 3 if they were in same draft years. And ekblad is someone they can use for sure.

I would almost always agree with this. However, when you are not a very good team (you just ended the year in the bottom 5) and there is not 1 but likely 2 generational type players in the next draft then it's not so cut and dry. As has been said, it will be an interesting decision and I think I will be happy either way (unless Isles end up with 6th overall pick and give it to us).

  10. If I were the Sabres...

    1st overall: Sam Reinhart

4th/5th overall: Leon Draisaitl or Michael Dal Colle

    29th overall: Adrian Kempe

    31st overall: Brendan Lemieux

    Me too.

    More from Friedman:

I wonder if Snow tries to repay this loyalty by winning next year and keeping a top five pick.

I think there's no doubt he will try. Will he succeed is another question. In most seasons probably 29 of the 30 GM's want to win and improve their team. Want being the key word.

  11. Even with an average goaltender I would put them in the 3-10 range with the insurance policy that they are one serious JT injury away from a high probability of a top 5 pick.

Although there is the slim potential Wang sells the team or is willing to spend more money (unlikely) and Snow can convince a top 4 Dman to join the team. That would obviously really help them. It is a very interesting situation.

  12. If they're going to rely on 2 rookies 2 sophmores, travis hamonic and whatever UFA is willing to sign for budget numbers for them, I want them to pick this year more than ever.

I'm assuming Visnovsky is gonna call it quits before his brain falls apart.

You can't score enough goals to win with that blueline.

    Edit: 8th -14th place? or 8th-14th pick?

Yep, I agree with all that. Plus they had Vanek most of the season and still stunk. Tavares was there for most of that terrible season as well. Yes they needed to upgrade their d/goaltending more than adding a great winger to play with JT. However, by losing Vanek they are going to have to improve their d/goaltending that much more as they may not have the forwards to score 4+ goals regularily to bail them out. I'll be happy taking the German Wayne Gretzky or Dal Colle this year, I'll be very happy if we get next years pick. For once, thanks Darcy.

  13. A Columbus victory tonight eliminates the Islanders from the playoffs.

A loss in regulation tonight for Buffalo means that the Panthers would need just one point for the remainder of the season in order for Buffalo to clinch a top three pick, and two points by Edmonton clinches the top odds in the lottery and a top two pick.

We're getting close now boys!!!! And girls!!!

  14. Peppy hasn't been around with an April calendar, and I need to devise something for my computer backgrounds during the long offseason months ahead :'(

Hahhaha, I kept checking here for the April calendar too. It will usually get to August and I'll still have my April calendar as my desktop and feel the need to change it to something else for a couple of months.

  15. Settle down, Beavis. Most of us pretty much just post the same stuff over and over anyway. And five similar posts over the course of a week really isn't that bad.

Honestly, it'd be weirder if he kept changing his mind.

I suppose that's true. I just felt like we already had a big discussion about that point like 4 or 5 days ago. I guess we have changed his opinion a bit. At first it was 8-15, now he's not so confident and has changed it to 8-14 :flirt:
