  1. "Amphibious Pitcher Makes Debut" If only there was a version of spellcheck that corrects stupidity... http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/eye-on-baseball/25208984/look-this-pat-venditte-headline-was-probably-inevitable
  2. Here's the fart to clear the biggest room ever. I was okay with Darcy until Pegula bought the team. There I said it. I was also cool with the Leino signing, and the Vanek signing. Why the heck do you think I'm here? My judgment needs a good slap in the face sometimes, and this is a good place for it! great topic by the way
  3. I was fortunate enough to see Gil at the Aud a number of times from 1970-73. As a starry-eyed kid back then, obviously he was always the main attraction (at least on the Sabres). He was the first Sabre (draft-pick wise) and to this day I don’t think there is any other Sabres player who is more representative of this franchise. He was, and is, THE quintessential Buffalo Sabre. So even though we’ve had this discussion here before, I can’t just sit here when some are questioning his commitment, because he smoked in the 70’s. The guy was a member of the ’72 Summit Series, the ’76 Canada Cup, and he was going bananas in the ’81 Canada Cup before he got hurt. He carried a 5-year old franchise to the Cup finals. He retired as the #6 top scorer of all-time. Back in the ‘70’s nobody cared about smoking. Back then people were allowed to smoke on airplanes, grocery stores, buses, taxis, doctor’s offices, you name it. Cigarette commercials were on TV. The culture today is completely different, but that doesn’t make people who smoked back then ambitionless degenerates. Pregnant women smoked back in the ‘70’s, and if that’s when you were born, your mom might have been one of them, but you won’t hear me telling you that your mom was a bad mother, so don’t tell me Perreault was a slacker ‘cause he smoked. That’s like saying Don Draper could have been more successful if he didn’t smoke.
  4. You're right. I meant Canada and UK in particular. I always did, too. It changed for me when I was trying to convince a friend of mine via email that the 2-party system was better for us in the US. In the process of attempting to do that, I changed my own mind.
  5. Well aren't you just a ray of sunshine! Unfortunately, I agree that the levels of political polarization and the media coverage back then were nothing compared to today. Heck, if Ross Perot was happening now, there would be History Channel "documentaries" on whether or not he was the anti-Christ. My hope for the 3-party system here is that the GOP fractures between tea partiers and moderates, and then the moderate Dem's align with the non-tea partiers. Then we have tea partiers, moderates and leftists. I think I could live with that.
  6. The best thing about it is that there is no advertising allowed until 5 weeks before the election. I'd love to see that happen here in the US, but it's just not going to.
  7. That's why I voted for Gore in 2000 instead of Nader. So, let's talk about 1992. Many people say that Clinton would not have won if there was no Ross Perot. Ross Perot didn't get any electoral votes, but he won 19% of the popular vote. How do we get back to a scenario where this type of thing is possible? I used to prefer the benefits of the 2-party system over a more parliamentary system, but I don't anymore.
  8. Maybe I'm petty, but I hope Kessel and Phaneuf hate Babcock and make his life miserable. Wait, that's not petty. I hate the Leafs and now he's one of them.
  9. Without a doubt, it comes from someone paying more than they are today, maybe even you and me. Bob's boss may even have to raise prices. My point is that Bob will take that extra money and spend it all right away. If you let someone like me, who is not living hand to mouth, keep my $100, I will sit on it. That $100 in Bob's hands will do much more to stimulate the economy than if you gave me the $100.
  10. I respectfully disagree with this, especially for Canada. Canada is fortunate enough to have universal healthcare. Your proposal would take that away. Then anyone with a debilitating medical condition is not going to be able to get the support they need. That's not a good enough reason to reduce taxes. One other point - when my mom died she left me a lump sum. She left my brother an equal amount of money, but she stipulated that he only get 1/3 at age 30, 1/3 at age 35 and the rest at age 40. My mother, unlike my brother, was no fool. And sure enough, at age 30 it took my brother 1 short year to piss away the entire first installment. Too many idiots in your scenario would piss away that money every year by gambling, drugs, etc., just like my brother did. By raising the minimum wage.
  11. I respectfully disagree with this. If you give a rich guy $100 (let's call him Chip), nothing changes for Chip. He's not going to think, "well I was just going to have meatloaf tonight, but now I can have filet mignon." That $100 is essentially going to go toward Chip's retirement. On the other hand, if you give someone living hand to mouth $100 (let's call him Bob), he is going to spend every penny of it immediately. You might say that this is a $100 stimulus for the economy, because this is money that Bob was not going to spend without the supplement. You might say that, but you wouldn't be capturing the whole picture. The fact that Bob inserted his $100 into the economy means that the benefactors of that extra spending will in turn spend money they wouldn't have otherwise. In other words, if you give Bob $100, it's going to be more like pumping $150 into the economy than just Bob's $100.
  12. The thing to keep in mind about Texas is that it is the most flagrantly gerrymandered state there is. Tom Delay even went to jail for this ("patriot" that he is). The average Texan is nowhere near as crazy as the average Texan politician. Don't take my word for it. Just look at Austin. The vast majority of Austin is dem. Yet all the congressional precincts there are conveniently just watered down enough with conservative pockets outside of town to keep them all GOP.
  13. Texas Governor Deploys State Guard To Stave Off Obama Takeover. Sounds too stupid to be true, right? Unfortunately not. http://www.npr.org/blogs/itsallpolitics/2015/05/02/403865824/texas-governor-deploys-state-guard-to-stave-off-obama-takeover
  14. Very much agreed about there being no single factor, and that Raygun deserves far far less credit. That Reagan BS is just rhetoric from the hawks/military-industrial complex/conservatives. If anything, Reagan damn near ended the Cold War by starting WWIII. For all you Poli Sci wonks out there, please note that almost the exact same time the USSR dissolved was the time that Russians were no longer over half of the population of the USSR. It is very difficult for a minority (even if they are a plurality) to maintain control of such a diverse nation. We as Americans tend to attach way more importance to our efforts in world affairs than is objectively warranted. For example, the Germans losing the Battle of Stalingrad was 20 times more important than the Allied success at Normandy, but you rarely hear anyone admit it.
  15. Away goat was black, not red.

Are we even sure the NHL will participate in the 2018 Olympics? It's in Korea.
  17. Well you know what that means. I'm on a mission from God (to find it here in NC).
  18. I wanted to know if it was suicide, also. I found these 2 links which say no. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/columnists/ct-steve-montador-nhl-concussions-haugh-spt-0222-20150221-column.html http://www.thehockeynews.com/blog/steve-montador-knew-he-was-going-to-pass-away-early/
  19. Not by a long shot! (although he is faster)
  20. New Oilers CEO is their only hope to overcome the ABYSMAL performance of Oilers management over the last decade or more. http://www.edmontonsun.com/2015/04/20/nicholson-oilers-boss-of-everything If he keeps Lowe (and he seems to like him), then I expect more of the same. Personally, I wouldn't trade the Sabres' future for their future for all the tea in China. In spite of that, I think Darnell Nurse is going to be a good NHL D-man.
  21. How about Kane keeps #9 and Eichel wears #IX (Roman numerals)? Then everyone is happy. Pi would be cool, too.
