Based on the trade proposal supposedly nixed on Friday; the cap wouldn't work without legitimate gymnastics and even then there would still be a problem cap wise. Coghlan, Dylan Krebs, Peyton Tuch, Alex 2022 1st round pick (VGK) for Eichel cant be made cap compliant without Buffalo retaining at least 3 mil and I can understand why we'd balk at that. Obviously they could "Kucherov" Eichel but they may need him just to get into the playoffs to begin with. Not to mention he'd be likely ready to go by the end of the Olympic Break which is two months prior to the playoffs.

I wouldn’t care what VGK, Anaheim or Calgary offered me if they required 5mil retention. It wouldn’t matter because we’d lose pieces down the line due to the anchor of 5 mil in dead cap. 2 mil can be skirted around and ignored. Im also looking down the line to a Skinner buyout in 2 years, 1 of those years has a 6mil + cap hit and anything more than 2 puts us around 9 to 10 mil in dead cap for a season.

2 mil is my max; anything more and it becomes a legitimate hinderance to the roster. Additionally I’d refuse to take multiple cap dumps plus retain.

I’d say the main difference between Granato and Krueger’s 3rd period collapses are based on the team itself. Krueger wanted them to play defense and thus the team would inevitably fall into a turtle formation. Under Granato It looks different; it isn’t as much intentional as it is a product of wear. When we play more physical teams, we seem to run out of gas in the 3rd and have to little of energy to push the opponent’s players back with our forecheck. But we don’t stop forechecking; only it loses its overall effectiveness. Essentially Krueger would hold out in the fort and get besieged until they lost where as Granato sallies forth until exhaustion this effectively forcing the team into the fort.

I disagree, I’d guess Adams wants to hit the ground running and the more flexibility the better. Let’s say the Sabres get 80 pts this year and legitimately look better. Adams needs to have a flexibility and foresight to see the mass quantity of great value UFAs that are bound to shake loose and have an ability to strike at any time. If ROR had no history here; I’d guess our analytics department would be all over trying to bring him in to solidify the center group around the many youngsters. In my opinion, if VGK wants 2 mil retention the base price is Theodore, Tuch and Krebs + a 1st and conditional picks. Why those two? Tuch and Theodore have good contracts for 5 & 4 years respectively and one can easily imagine sticking 1 mil on each of their contracts and moving on. Whereas taking only futures gives the appearance of far more general suffering, a constant reminder of Eichel, and effectively a slap in the face when looking at the cap overall.

I doubt it, even retention would be paid by insurance more than likely. Barring insurance not covering the surgery which still would leave a fraction of the risk at 2mil. I believe it’s a cap reason

Reacquire Borgen for a 5th or something. I actually like the team that sets up. It gives us a top end defense Dahlin - Theodore Power - Jokiharju Samuelsson - Borgen Pysyk (as the ever useful 7th Dman) You'd have Mitts, Krebs, Cozens, "Thompson?", Girgensons at Center depth, Olofsson, Tuch, Quinn, Okposo at RW Asplund, Peterka, Skinner, Murray? at LW Then whatever we draft with our pick would be gravy; win the lottery and we'd instantaneously have a playoff roster with depth, skill and grit up and down the roster. All we'd need is a goalie. The problem is we can't risk our 1sts in any conditions

How is Brisson not over a couple of those guys?

Well Brisson may have ended up promising his son in order to overcome a Krebs roadblock. Plus he’d be going to a great hockey city with two of his college teammates.

Oh I would want a forward prospect for sure hence Brisson still being in my deal but I’m not all that confident in dual trades

To be honest I’d keep Theodore and just run Dahlin - Theodore Power - Jokijarju Thats a solid balance of youth and varying levels of experience

Eichel & Johnson for Theodore, Tuch, and Brisson + a '22 1st Tuch and Theodore are best friends and have a bachelor house together in Vegas.
