It's a move you make if you're trying to make the playoffs. He's a rental on a bad cap hit, but it's a vote of confidence from Botterill unless he trades a bunch of good pieces out now and it just turns into a cap dump for no reason.

My hope for today is that Botterill, who thus far has been bad at asset management, doesn't decide that it is suddenly his priority and starts selling off every FA this team has for picks. I would prefer he make no moves at all than make moves that would damage this team down the stretch. Any move he does make must make the team better today and next season.

He needs to make that latter trade because this roster is going to be tough to fill out in the off-season if he doesn't.

The big difference this year though is that they've managed to play much more consistent hockey. This time last year they had yet to win two games in a row since December 11th and 13th, and wouldn't win two in a row until the last two games of the season. It took them 50 games. This year they're at least managing to string some wins together. Hopefully they won't collapse down the stretch, but if they do I figure it won't be a total train wreck.
