  1. I really miss that team. There were some legit gamers on those late 90s squads. The Sabres actually had an "attitude era".

It feels like a long time ago now. :(

I always felt like the addition of Vaclav Varada to the mix was the final piece. He drove the Flyers nuts in the playoffs.

  2. The number was retired out of respect, because he died while a member of the team. I'm not sure when we crossed the line between respect and idolatry, but I do see some of what you're seeing.

Why did the Sabres wait until January 1996 to retire it? It was part of a marketing campaign to boost attendance in the final season at the Aud, with a terrible team. Seems like this is where the franchise has gotten in trouble with retired numbers. Gare and LaFontaine then went up in the season after the lockout. Larry Quinn is the common denominator.

  3. LOL. Tim brought a respectability to the Sabres defense in the early years and set the table for d-men like Shoenfeld. The guy was about 42 when he was with the Sabres. He was tough as nails...they said if he could get you in that bear hug, he could break your ribs. There was a connection w Imlach's cup winning team. The retired number is a bit over the top but the statue is a way over the top clueless Pegula-ism.

Hi. I'd like to blame Pegula for this. Do you have more information/sources/links?

  4. He played two season with Buffalo. His numbers don't jump out at you in those two years. It was later revealed that his blood alcohol level was twice the legal limit at the time of the accident. I don't know of any charities or fundraiser he did in the Buffalo area. He also started his Coffee Shop in Canada and not here in Buffalo. But for some unknown reason, people in the area and the Sabres Organization retires his jersey and recently put up a statue of him at the Harbor Center. No offense but I have seen other Sabres players in this organization do a lot more then Tim Horton. I'm not trying to be mean about this. I just want someone to explain to me why this man is Idolized in Buffalo so much?

I don't think he's idolized all that much. Most fans never saw him play, after all. He meant a lot to a young franchise, gave it, along with Imlach and Roger Crozier, some instant credibility. Defensemen like Jim Schoenfeld and Mike Robitaille have spoken so highly of how well mentored the young defense. He was a father figure to them. That said, a good argument can be made that his number should not have been retired. Still, the guy did die as a Sabre, thankfully the only time that's happened in franchise history. To be clear, the Sabres didn't commission the trophy they unveiled today.

  5. I don't need numbers to tell me Drew sucks.

Matty might suck but I like him.

Cody can go choke on a fruit smoothie.

Ain't no sunshine in d4rkville today. And I like it. Kerfuffled Carter vs. Angry Eleven in a grudge match to the death. The budding young curmudgeon vs. the Bill Bixby of Buffalo.

  6. Have the Sabres ever played two consecutive home games against the same opponent?

I imagine it's happened a lot. Feb. 10 and Feb. 15, 2013, again Boston. With an intervening road game. But have they ever played consecutive games against the same opponent, both at home (regular season)? You can download the media guide which has all-time results at sabres.com.

  7. Explain to me why Hodgson on a 4th line makes any sense at all (as opposed to a scratch).

    I'll breathlessly await insight.

You can breathe. It wasn't a jab at you, it's an inside joke with nfreeman. He thinks I thought Lindy was "holding back" Thomas Vanek.

  8. The only one that confused me was how he knew Tyreese's name. If I remember correctly, when Gareth mentioned Daryl and Carol taking off after that car, he only described her and didn't actually name her (correct me if I'm wrong). And actually, now that I am typing this, he probably shouldn't have known Judith's name either since the three of them were all together, separate from the rest of the group the whole time.

But Tyreese told the Terminus dude who had Judith by the neck that her name was Judith. And he didn't kill him like he said he did. And that guy ended up back with Gareth. Don't they put all kinds of "easter eggs" in this show? It almost seems like they had Gareth name all the names so schmucks like me could say I was right about him not knowing Bob. Now my head hurts.

By the way I watched the basement scene again and Bob came out of the water with a hole in his shirt over the shoulder. Certainly not enough to explain the large wound he ended up with, but there nonetheless.

  9. And yet you come into the thread and post.

I promise, if Eerie, Bradford or Oil City, or wherever it is that you live, gets something nice, I'm not going to go to an Internet forum to ###### all over everyone else's enthusiasm.

You won't ever not have to do that.

For the record, it's as a Sabres fan that I don't care. It's good for Buffalo. Great. I don't live there. When I come to games, I pack a baloney sandwich and a cranberry juice. By the way, moderators, why is "Jordan" censored?
