January 12, 1978
Gilbert Perreault nets his 10th hat trick as a Sabre in a 6-3 loss at Cleveland against the Barons. A month and a half later, also at Cleveland, the Sabres would get revenge, blitzing the Barons 13-3.

One more Sabre of the 70s is a victim of the Scotty Bowman Era: Rick Dudley, who left the Sabres in 1975 to play in the World Hockey Association but returned in 1979, is lost on waivers to Winnipeg.

Jason Dawe scores 10 seconds into overtime as the Sabres defeat the Phoenix Coyotes 3-2 in the Arizona desert.

Dominik Hasek makes 21 saves in a "routine" shutout as the Sabres beat the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, 4-0, to salvage a split on their four-game Western swing. It's the Dominator's 49th shutout as a Sabre in the regular season. Maxim Afinogenov scores a "roll the highlight film" goal, Chris Gratton nets his fourth goal in as many games and Rhett Warrener lays out some bodies in the victory. The fourth Sabre goal is their 11th unanswered in the Duck Pond.

January 11, 1973
The New York Rangers become the first team during the 1972-73 season to win on Memorial Auditorium ice when they defeat the Sabres 4-2 to snap Buffalo's unbeaten streak at home at 21 (18-0-3), a record which survives to this day. As the Sabres skate off the ice at the end of the game, the sellout crowd serenades them with a chant of "Thank You Sabres! Thank You Sabres!" It wouldn't be the last time the team would hear those appreciative words. The Sabres would be thanked again after they were eliminated at the Aud by the mighty Montreal Canadiens in the first round of the playoffs, but not after putting a serious scare into the Habs. It was the first time the Sabres qualified for the playoffs in the short history of the franchise.

In Boston Garden, Tom Barrasso makes 20 saves for his fifth career shutout (and third in eight games) as the Sabres blank the Bruins, 3-0. The Sabres stretch their unbeaten streak to nine games (8-0-1) and have lost just twice in 20 -- but that includes eight ties. The Sabres will go 8-3-2 in their next 13 games after this date but finish the season 11-13-2 and bow out in a devastating first-round defeat to Quebec for the second straight year in a harbinger of bad days to come for Sabres fans.

Crushing playoff losses do often signal "depressions" for Buffalo sports teams, don't they? No Goal -- Sabres barely make playoffs next season. Music City Miracle -- Bills haven't been back to the playoffs since. Lemieux's heaven-sent goal in Game Six and Kasparaitis' fluke in Game Seven overtime -- Sabres haven't skated for the Cup since. And in 1985, after Quebec scored three goals in the final 10 minutes in a deciding fifth game in Le Colisee to win 6-5, the Sabres missed the playoffs the following two seasons.

From his hospital bed, Imlach wonders if New York Rangers' GM Emile Francis will take him up on his trade offer for little-used Ranger forward Jim Lorentz.

Martin Biron stops Daniel Alfredsson on a penalty shot as the Sabres spank the Senators 7-4 at the Corel Centre. Miro Satan has a hat trick on longtime Sabre nemesis Ron Tugnutt. It's the second straight game in which Buffalo goaltenders have faced a penalty shot. Dwayne Roloson was beaten by Petr Sykora two days earlier at HSBC Arena as the New Jersey Devils doubled up the Sabres, 6-3. Where was Dominik Hasek? He was still out with that torn right groin he suffered early in the season.

The Sabres win their 12th straight game at the Aud and extend their unbeaten streak at home to 21 (18-0-3) with a 2-0 shutout of the Flyers. Dave Dryden makes 35 saves for his second shutout of the season, and Jim Lorentz and Rick Martin provide the goals. To this point, Buffalo had not lost at home during the entire 1972-73 season -- a season which saw the Sabres make the playoffs for the first time.
January 7, 1983
At the Aud, Phil Housley scores with three seconds left in the third period to tie the Vancouver Canucks at 5. Fresh out of high school, the flashy offensive defenseman wows Sabres' fans in his first season. The kid almost immediately dubbed "Wowie Housley" by Rick Jeanneret finishes third in team scoring with 19 goals and 47 assists, behind Gilbert Perreault and Tony McKegney. Housley and the Sabres would sweep Montreal in the first round of the playoffs but then lose to the Bruins in a heartbreaking seventh game overtime at Boston Garden.

100 goals in the OHL before joining the Sabres. I guess you could say he was a bit of disappointment in Buffalo. But he did enjoy a nice renaissance in Tampa and played as recently as 2000 in Japan, scoring 14 goals for Kokudo! But holy moly Tucker had 7 goals and 10 points in that six-game series against the Bruins in 1988.

shrader, good suggestion. I see on twobillsdrive.com that they have a "This Day in Bills History" feature that updates automatically every day. I might approach the powers that be here and see if it's possible.
CSB... that goal is on the RJ CD. I myself can't remember that goal, but it certainly blew Rick and Jim away. Speaking of the CD, I got mine last night. Loved it but was bitterly disappointed in the May Day call. Why was it cut so short, both at the beginning and at the end?
Also, it still drives me crazy that for a few year in the late 80s, the horn at the Aud absolutely destroyed Jeanneret's goal calls. You can hear it on the CD several times where his voice is just wiped out. WTF was running the audio board at that time?

A day after stunning the Soviet Wings, the Sabres arrive in the cradle of hockey and receive a long standing ovation before the game from the faithful at the Montreal Forum. Perhaps the reception inspires the Sabres, who win 4-2, just their fifth victory in Montreal in 21 tries to date. "How often do you get a standing ovation in an opponent's rink?" Sabre GM Punch Imlach pondered.

The Islanders' Stanley Cup dynasty is in decline and the career of Sabres' goalie Tom Barrasso is on the rise as the two teams meet on Long Island. Barrasso stops Bryan Trottier on a penalty shot as the Sabres win, 7-3.
January 5, 1990
The Sabres trade John Tucker to the Washington Capitals for future considerations. Six months later, the Sabres would purchase Tucker back from the Caps only to trade him again in January 1991 to the Islanders for future considerations. Must feel good to be so wanted, eh? Tucker ended up in Tampa Bay for four seasons before retiring. In Buffalo, he scored 116 goals in the regular season and nine in the playoffs, none bigger than one in overtime of the first round of the playoffs in 1988 against the Bruins.

At the Aud, the Sabres retire the sweater number 2 of legendary NHL defenseman Tim Horton, who played two seasons in Buffalo and was credited with helping to develop a young Sabre defense and providing veteran leadership to the nascent franchise. Before joining the Sabres for the 1972-73 season, the reliable Horton was a seven-time all star and four-time winner of the Stanley Cup with Toronto. He died in a car accident returning from a game in Toronto in 1974. And, yes, younger fans, THAT Tim Horton. :)

The Aud was shaking before an exhibition game with the vaunted Soviet Wings. The Wings were shaking after getting destroyed, 12-6, by the Sabres. Rick Martin scored two goals and added three assists, Fred Stanfield potted one goal and helped on three others, and Danny Gare lit the lamp twice to key the Sabre attack. Despite six goals against, the Sabres effectively limited the Wings' offense by employing an early version of the neutral zone trap and hitting everything in red. The loss was the worst ever suffered by the Soviets in international competition to that date. Sabres' General Manager Punch Imlach called it the high point in the team's six years in the league.

Real "Buddy" Cloutier records his second hat trick in a week ? the only two of his short tenure in Buffalo, in fact ? in a 9-4 win over the Winnipeg Jets at the Aud. Cloutier got his first trick on Brian Ford. On this night, he gets his second on another Brian, Hayward.

Maybe I'm naive, but I would hope players don't go out and party the night before a game. You'd think the professional athlete, in general, is a person with a lot more discipline than the average Joe and with much more awareness and concern about how alcohol affects health, not to mention their performance within 18 hours. Maybe it happens, a guy here a guy there, but enough of the team to explain their listless performance? I don't think so. As for the road team on a business trip per se, do they really hit the Chip Strip the night before a New Year's Day game? Why am I thinking they don't. Am I naive? I think I'm naive.

The Soviet Central Red Army marches into Buffalo looking to avenge their 12-6 loss to the Sabres in 1976. They march out embarrassed and surprised again, this time 6-1. Danny Gare and Ric Seiling each score twice as the Sabres blow the game wide-open in the third period.

It's finally the Sabres' turn to ruin someone's New Year as Buffalo burns the Toronto Maple Leafs 8-1 at Marine Midland Arena. Erik Rasmussen, Maxim Afinogenov and Stu Barnes each score a pair of goals.
