Thanks. I don't think those studies are directed to the question that I have, though. My question has the modern trend of year-round, over-use, and specialization in youth sports had an effect on the health of pro athletes during their careers? Are pro athletes healthier now than they were, say, 30 years ago? It's tricky. Because there's a lot to control for. The year-round specialization is presumably bad, but there are lots of other things happening around that behaviour that is probably good for an athlete's health (overall fitness and strength training, nutrition, as examples). It calls to mind a study that a friend of mine worked on: The consumption of fish that have high mercury levels in them. Mercury - very bad for your health! Fish - very good for your health! How's that shake out?

The Sabres believe UPL is their #1 goaltender and are behaving accordingly.
-
Crazy. Why not leave him down there for the next week and give Ellis another game? I wanted to see Lyon on Friday, and Ellis on Saturday. Leave UPL down and get him really ready. Unless they have a trade partner lined up and they want to see UPL in NHL action? WTF?
-
My bet, they plan to run Lyon and then UPL against Toronto.
-
Really hoped they would have kept him in Rochester for at least one more game

Sabres recall UPL from the Amerks

there actually are studies that show just that actually... A review found that youth who specialize most (i.e., focus on one sport, train > 8 months/year or quit other sports) were 81% more likely to experience an overuse injury than those who played many sports. https://www.gmanetwork.com/news/lifestyle/healthandwellness/665293/sport-specialization-tied-to-increased-risk-of-injury-in-kids-and-teens/story/ One large prospective study found that sport specialization was associated with increased risk of injury in girls (hazard ratio ≈ 1.31) and that total hours/week of vigorous activity was a strong predictor of injury in both sexes. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31555716/ In a case-control study of ~1,190 athletes aged 7-18, specialized single-sport athletes in individual sports had higher rates of overuse injury (44.3% vs 32.2%) and “serious overuse injuries” (23.4% vs 11.6%) compared to non-specialized athletes. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28351225/ In a review of youth sport specialization, risk factors such as playing >1 organized team, competing year-round, participating more hours/week than one’s age in years, and high degree of specialization were consistently found to increase risk of overuse injuries and lower-extremity pain. https://meridian.allenpress.com/jat/article/54/10/1040/420868/Health-Consequences-of-Youth-Sport-Specialization Some organizations note that kids who play the same sport year-round — especially without a break/alternate sport season — face more repetitive motions and stress on bones, tendons, growth plates, etc. https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/conditions-and-diseases/sports-injuries/youth-sport-specialization

The 5 headed Goalie Monster - What is the solution?

Is he over Lyon at the moment? Probably not but I think that could change. I think the situation last year was partly a case of burn out. When the third pair is Clifton and Bryson, a second pair getting not enough D out of Sammy and Power it's tough. Add in that some of the forwards were not as responsible as a few we added I think we might be in a better situation. So while UPL might not be the whole solution I still think he is part of it compared to the alternatives. Only his play will determine where he is. UPL's record is 155 games 71/65/15 .898 behind a lot of crappy Buffalo D. Lyon is 119 games 53/42/11 .904. Some of that was on Florida and Carolina two of the most defensive teams in the east. Maybe at age 32 it's all coming together but that is very few games for a player of his age. Best case they both hit .910 or above and share the workload. If you go with Ellis, Lyon is playing 70% of the games and my guess is that will not go well. We just have recency bias with UPL. A 26 year old goalie with a winning record in the NHL is not going to get waived unless he is hurt beyond repair. So I have talked myself into saying yes he can lead us to the playoffs if everything around him is better. - Today

Like for a different team? Vegas? I’ll rephrase my question, can UPL lead the Sabres to a playoff birth or more? -
The people have always only been sheep to the hidden wolves.

Ellis is quick, and clearly reads the play well, but he is rough around the edges. We need to see him in a few more games. I think between Levi & UPL you get the same results, and I'd rather keep Levi because he's light in the loins. Not a fan of UPL, so I wouldn't mind giving him his papers ASAP, but if playing him increases his trade value and/or the interest in trading for him, that's fine. But have this sh%t settled by the end of November. -

In the right system at least to the playoffs. Maybe more. So yes.
