You have the choice NOT to read it. If you don't like scoreboard watching, then DON'T read this.

I didn't for the first month the thread was posted, but like the proverbial cat I became curious to this ever growing thread and investigated. Only to be severly underwhelmed.

BTW, the thread's subtext reads "If you don't like scoreboar". Only upon readig the thread did I find out that it should finish, "then don't bother reading this."

Game 69 -- A point is a point

The first game of the road trip went through Pittsburgh and Pittsburgh went through Buffalo like a hot knife through butter. After playing a competitive first, Pittsburgh dominated the second limiting Buffalo to a few of shots on goal. Pittsburgh then moved ahead 4-2 in the third. Buffalo answered back with a nicely executed two-on-one Hecht to Briere. Then it got wild. Pittsburgh missed the empty net, hit the post on the empty net and glanced one off the side before Buffalo recovered and stormed up the ice en masse. Briere got the puck behind the net and fed his co-captain with just seconds left. Drury easily beat Fleury with six seconds left to force OT and a SO. Sabres lose 2-1 in SO but claim a point in a game they were thoroughly beaten in. Buffalo managed a disappointing 16 shots for the game but got four goals on them.

Toronto beats Tampa, Ottawa stuns NYR, Montreal beats the NYI and Carolina holds off Florida.. That puts Carolina back in at number 8. The Islanders grip on 7 is also slipping as a wild scramble for 7 and 8 continues between Carolina, NYI, NYR, Toronto, and Montreal. Every game counts, every point is huge. Atlanta has reclaimed the home ice from Tampa after Toronto beat Tampa. Pittsburgh and Ottawa are a point apart for home ice with Pittsburgh having a game in hand.

Game 70 -- Payday for trade deadline acquisitions

Buffalo got production out of its two trade deadline acquisitions as Dainus scored a game tying goal and Conks just turned back 42 of 45 shots on goal. Florida owned the play in the Buffalo zone nearly the entire game. Wave after wave of Florida rushes ended up with offensive zone opportunities. Somehow, Buffalo wins the game 5-3 being outshot 45-20. Game highlights include back-to-back goals on back-to-back Buffalo shots. They didn't get many shots, but they got into Belfour's head and beat him like a dusty rug. And the four game losing streak is history.

Carolina does not hold serve at home and loses to the Devils. The NYI, sans Diepetro, get blown out in Ottawa. Boston stages a comeback against the Capitals. Toronto, NYR and Montreal are still on the outside but with the Carolina and NYI losses, can play their way in. Ottawa moves ahead of Pittsburgh in points but Pittsburgh has a game in hand. Looks like Boston and Florida are too far back to make a charge.

Game 71 -- Lightning doesn't strike thrice...

Buffalo rebounds from one down with three goals on three consecutive shots. Second game in two nights was no problem. Miller stopped 35 of 37 shots. Tampa was game but just couldn't beat Miller enough. Good road win and great to get another two points.

All three teams chasing for a playoff spot lost. Does anybody want it? Going back to Thursday night all five teams chasing for the spot have lost their last game. NYI and Carolina holding down the last two spots. Montreal was tied 2-2 with Pitt last night but got blown out in the third. Pitt leaps ahead of Ottawa by one point. This might be the most interesting to watch going down the stretch to see which one gets home ice in their series. NYR lose in OT to Atlanta. Washington stops a nine game losing streak at Toronto's expense. Killer game for the Leafs to lose.

With Ottawa idle and the Buffalo win, the divisional number is reduced by two to 14. Buffalo leads by 9 with 11 to play. The playoff number was reduced by four to 2. Game 72 -- Out of gas in Atlanta...

Fourth game in six nights results in an OT loss with just seconds left in the game. Buffalo was in the box providing Atlanta a 4-on-3 PP which they converted on a pretty pass from the corner to the slot to the net. Buffalo had their chances with their own 4-3 to start the OT but couldn't get their first PP goal in forever. Buffalo trailed by one goal three times and battled back to tie it up each time. Atlanta is a hot team having gone 9-1 in their last 10 so taking a point was definitely a good result. Not too shabby getting six of eight points on this road trip against teams who had everything to play for.

Washington pulverized Tampa seriously denting their divisional hopes. Tampa must now worry about Carolina who is just two points out of 2nd. Atlanta adds two with the OT win strengthening their grip on the 3rd overall seed. Pittsburgh prevails in the SO over Ottawa. Worse case scenario for Buffalo was both teams collecting points and they did. Pittsburgh trails NJ by two and they have one more game to play. Pittsburgh stays ahead of Ottawa as they have tied in points but have played one less game. Pittsburgh still has one more game with both Ottawa and Buffalo. Rangers have clawed their way back into the 8th seed as the Islanders without Diepetro are fading.

With 99 points Buffalo trails the President's Trophy race by one. Nashville leads by one and Deroit is tied with Buffalo. The conference number is down to 16 with the Buffalo point. Buffalo leads by five. With Ottawa OTL and the Buffalo OTL, the divisional number is down to 12. Buffalo leads by 9 with 10 to play. The playoff number mathematically is still 2 as the Islanders can still get to 100 points. Many sports sites are showing Buffalo clinched based on tie breakers. Interesting that NHL.com is not one of them.

Game 73 -- Back in front

Washington came into town on a mini roll and left after a thorough dismantling by Buffalo. Stafford netted a pair and Danny collected his 30th on the PP. A pair of PP goals and a reasonable PK left this came comfortably in the win column.

Nashville lost in Calgary. Rangers shut out Marty B (EDIT: er... Nittymaki). The Avs won in Edmonton making them 9-0-1 in their last ten. They are inching closer to a playoff spot. Ottawa reclaimed home ice from Pittsburgh although Pittsburgh has a game in hand. Somewhere down in the tie breakers Montreal moved past Carolina for the 8th spot. They are tied with Toronto at 80 points. NYI are at 79.

The Sabres clinched playoffs after their Tampa Bay win.

Yes, you are correct. That was done based on remaining schedule and tie breakers. My thread says, no ties considered. I am going purely by mathematical elimination. I'm guessing that is what NHL.com was doing as well as they didn't post the "x" until yesterday.

They had clinched playoffs without worrying about ties after their OT loss to Atlanta.

You mean simple math... :nana: They mathematically were in after the Tampa game. The calculation just took into account the total available points left league-wide rather than the possible points for the Sabres.

Actually very simple math.. We are talking addition and subtraction... You know, the only math an engineer really needs cause every other calculation is done by a computer now...

Game 74 -- What a third period

Toronto had this one in the win column when a puck bounced off a referee right in front of the net to Devereaux's stick. He beat a lunging and surprised Miller. Miller gets up, throws his stick at the goal post and does his best Belfour post goal routine. And then the flood gates open. Vanek on a slapshot PP goal makes it 4-2. Briere whacking away at the rebounds beats Raycroft. Pomminstein gets a lead pass from Danny, splits the defense and beats Raycroft and now it was 4-4. Surely the Leafs will respond... Nope. Here comes the Roy line 3 on 2 and they execute just perfectly as Stafford gets the puck and easily beats Raycroft into a wide open net. Four goals in a nine minute span including the game tying and game winning. Game..Set.. and Match... WOW..

No other EC games tonight. Carolina won the night before and reclaims the 8th spot temporarily. NJ lost in Tampa the night before. Remember when NJ was playing to tie Buffalo for the conference lead just six short games ago? Pittsburgh is within 2 of NJ. Could NJ-Ottawa square off in round 1? NYI beat Pittsburgh the night before slowing Pitt momentum and denying them a chance to tie for the division lead. Montreal breaks wide open their game with Boston (also night before) to keep pace. Rangers, Carolina, Montreal, Islanders and Toronto are all still battling for the 7th and 8th seeds.

Game 75 -- Yesterday:"What a third period", Tonight: "What a turd"

Hard to find anything positive to say about this game other than at least they didn't get shutout. Toronto owned all aspects of the play. Miller started and was chased. Conks played well but did surrender a goal. Give Toronto their due. They were not about to lose this one. Throw away the tape on this one.

Meanwhile, the rest of the EC was winning. Devils in a SO over Panthers. Ottawa blitzed the Lightning. Carolina, Montreal, NYI and NYR all win key games. Pitt won but is still four back of NJ.

Game 76 -- Trap Defying

Haven't kept an official tab on this, but when PA predicts a win, they win.

After a cautious first period, Buffalo takes the early lead on a Hecht goal. NJ answers back netting one on a four-on-four. Fast forward to the third and these teams scored five more times. Buffalo had two, two-goal leads and salts this one away. Danny had the play of the game with a move on Rafalski that left him wondering what happened. He then sent a cross ice pass to a streaking Hecht. Brodeur tried to stack his blockers but Hecht beat him anyway. This game was also memorable in that two walking wounded returned and scored, Kotalik and Paille. For the second time in this series, NJ scores a goal with just seconds on the clock.

Did you here that thud? That was Carolina going down to Philly and losing a chance to be in the 7th slot. Atlanta left a precious point on the ice last night after they lost in a shootout to Florida. Could this get any more exciting? Tampa a few days ago was all but a lock for a playoff spot. Now they are sitting at 86 points tied with Montreal. Three teams, Carolina, Montreal and Toronto are at 84, just two back. And even the Rangers, sitting at 87 are within reach.

NJ, Ottawa and Pittsburgh all have 98 points. NJ and Ottawa have 45 wins and Pitt has 44. Atlanta 89 and Tampa 86 are still vying for the Southeast. About the only thing that seems certain at the moment is that Buffalo will finish first in the Conference. The 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th seeds will probably not be decided until the last day of the regular season. And some of them will come down to tie breakers..

With the Buffalo win over NJ, the conference number is down to four. The divisional number is down to four as well after those Boys from Beantown cooled off Ottawa at Scotia Bank. As an added bonus to Buffalo, Ottawa vs NJ on 3 April and Pittsburgh vs Ottawa on 5 April.. Buffalo leads by seven with six to play. NJ, Pittsburgh and Ottawa have just five games left. The Sabres have clinched the 6th playoff spot so far.
