SABRES SIGN DEFENSEMAN JAKE McCABE

BUFFALO, N.Y. (April 2, 2014) --- The Buffalo Sabres today announced the team has signed defenseman Jake McCabe to a three-year, entry-level contract.

McCabe (6'0", 195 lbs., 10/12/93) recently completed his junior season with the University of Wisconsin (Big Ten), earning first-team All-Big Ten honors by registering a career-high 25 points (8+17) through 33 games and serving as the team’s assistant captain in 2013-14. His point total was fifth-best for the Badgers, who captured the Big Ten conference tournament championship, and fourth-best among defensemen in the Big Ten. In 2013, he served as captain of Team USA at the IIHF World Junior Championship in Ufa, Russia, where the United States took home the gold medal.

The Eau Claire, Wis. native was selected by the Sabres in the second round (44th overall) of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. Prior to his collegiate career, McCabe played two seasons with the U17 and U18 U.S. National Development Teams (USHL), appearing in 54 games and collecting 11 points (2+9).

I thought the NCAA guys were different from CHL players in that regard.

The 10 game thing is CBA-specific for all players. I wonder if Ruhwedel's situation last year may be confusing you. He played 7 years but did burn up his the first year of his contract. That was because the 10 games was prorated to the 48 game season, so the cutoff was instead 6 games (or 5, I'm not sure on how they rounded that).

7 games.

Great to see McCabe signed, I hope Risto gets sent to help Rochester. I will now actually watch tomorrow as I want to know what McCabe can do on NHL ice.

Ruhwedel wouldn't sign unless he played in the NHL last year. This situation more of a "tryout" for McCabe

Let him hit the ice if they aren't burning a year on the ELC to see where his game is. Otherwise it would be a waste.

By joining the #Sabres and playing now, 2013-14 becomes Year 1 of Jake McCabe's 3-year entry level contract.

Hmmmm, that is what I thought.

@kevinoDandC

An FYI: 2013-14 as Year 1 of McCabe's ELC isn't necessarily what #Sabres wanted. It's often a collegian's contract demand for leaving early.

That makes sense but I can't see it here. We don't have to sign him this year correct? Can't he go back to NCAA? If so and we still hold his rights I don't see the benefit of burning a year on the contract so he can make the jump next year when we're all anticipating being a bottom feeder anyway.
