I actually knew they weren't on the same line, so it's sorta weird you decided to preemptively "correct" me on that. Of course, they ARE on the power play together. So it's not like they are completely separated on the team either. Now we see how Strome does against checking lines and without CM on the power play.

Oh. no there is not. Wouldn't it be nice if the Sabres actually went ahead and tried to develop this guy? They rushed him to the NHL right after they drafted him using the "ZOMG! We need a center!!!1!" logic. A full year in the AHL will do him good. Plus, I don't really trust Nolan to give him a lot of minutes anyway. The Sabres have a lot of problems and rushing prospects isn't the answer. -
I actually Googled the first "McKelvin gives the game away" game this morning. September 2009 against New England. Over 5 years later and he's still as stupid as a bag of rocks. The Bills history of first round picks in the last 15 years is a tragedy.

Even if we draft both McDavid and Eichel (assuming the Islanders collapse and win the lottery *and* that we finish dead last in the league), it'll be at least 25 years before we're good again.

If you've been battling for a starting job for years and you finally win it somewhere, you might be reluctant to shake the Etch-a-Sketch and start over somewhere else. If the Neuvirth we've been seeing is the real Neuvirth, we'll be ready to pay him. That should help too.

FWIW, our two best players are our two highest picks: Dareus and Watkins. So #Tank? Today's game was a microcosm of the last 15 years. Are we dead? Is this hell? Will we ever break out of this cycle of mediocre suckiness?

Close cousin to this argument is the "It will be at least X years before we're good again." It also completely ignores the possibility of trades and free agent signings, *and* how quickly things can change in pro sports. No one knows the future and things change FAST in pro sports. A lot can happen in just a couple years.

The Sabres end up drafting Barzal or Marner 5th overall. They win the Stanley Cup three years later. Both sides claim to be right. I could live with that.

If we have to "settle" for Hanifin at 3, I'd still feel pretty confident with Reinhart and Hanifin as the two pillars of our rebuild. After that it gets sketchy. There's a big drop off and guys like Marner and Barzal are smaller than Samson. Imagine the Darcy jokes.

People also forget that other teams know about McDavid and Eichel too. What's to stop Carolina from trading everyone this month or next? There's also a chance for teams to collapse all on their own. Last year that team was us (pre-Nolan) when seemingly no one was willing to care. The Sabres don't look like they're going to do that again. The season is only about 1/6th over. A lot can happen.
