Yeah, he got us from last in the league to 5th last! Name one other GM that could have us jump 4 spots after drafting Jack Eichel. Plus we're guaranteed Moulson and Ennis for 2 more years and Bogo for three more. Is next year too early to induct him into the Sabres Hall of Fame?

There's discussion, and then there's having a 10+ hour long meltdown about a 3rd round pick that you literally know nothing about. State your opinion and then go about your day. It's a 17 year old NHL draft pick. We're years away from definitively knowing if that move was good or bad.

1. Seems like the Sabres thought they might. 2a. They believed it. 2b. As Weave just said, your best guess is that they reached for a defenseman (which is what you wanted) but that doesn't count because it's not the one you wanted (presumably a guy you saw on a mock draft or scouting report you saw).

Important Reminder: Literally everything you, and everyone else on the board (with the exception of Brawndo), knows about these players is from Google. The teams know infinitely more from spending years watching them, and even for them it's guesswork. A re-draft next year would look completely different, and another re-draft a year later would look different from that. Maybe relax and hope for the best.

1. They said they knew other teams were interested in him. 2. If you identify a player you think could be special, you make sure you get him. Trying to trade down or wait as long as you can isn't worth the risk.

WGR550.com has an interview with amateur scout Jeff Crisp where he says they'd been following him for two years and even brought him in to Buffalo for a visit. Also said they thought other teams were aware of him even if he wasn't ranked. I love this pick just for all the mystery.

How many pull-ups?
-
So you want them to swing for the fences but with safe picks that everyone has heard of. Got it.

It's actually amazing. It's been universally acknowledged for months that this wasn't a very strong draft and now people are freaking out because we didn't take the players that we were supposed to take based on the rankings. Our first three picks all seem like good value and then we started swinging for the fences and going off the board starting in the late 3rd round. I would have preferred Farrance but I'm fine with going high-risk that late in the draft. You never know. Plus I'm still expecting GMJB to make a move that re-shapes our roster in a significant way this summer. It's not all on the draft to fix things.

He was there last year. Sounds like he went undrafed last season?
-
He has a picture of Erik Karlsson as his Twitter background, FWIW. Wish there were highlights somewhere.
-
Kris Baker saying 6'1" and 165.

You usually don't get much in 3rd round anyway. And how do you know they didn't pick Martin because they were trying to draft for need that year?
-
.....what?
-
Someone wake up Weave and tell him we need him to explain BPA for everyone again today.
-
Asplund had 12 points there in his draft year of that helps.
-
A 17 year old playing in the top league in Sweden.
-
#37 overall is 40-ish. Sounds a lot like Asplund from the first things I'm reading.

I agree with your overall point, but the fact that our first three picks (1st, 3rd, and 4th round) are all NHL players actually is an indication of a pretty good draft in 2009.

Sabres lead the league in #1 prospects!!!
-
Especially when we're one more emoji away from trading Kane for one.
-
I don't think getting your 1st round draft pick's name right in the thread about him is pedantic. I also think it's hilarious that no one noticed for over an hour while we were comparing how many pull-ups everyone on the board can do.
-
FYI - we're on page 5 of this thread and no one has pointed out that we've misspelled his name in the title. It's MITTELSTADT. Not "Mittlestadt." OK, back to talking pull-ups.....
