Hey, there was a great Sabres' game on TV last night... MSG is rebroadcasting "vintage" Sabre games. Last night was Game 6 of the 1994 playoff series with New Jersey. The one that was scoreless until the fourth overtime? Great stuff. Brodeur vs. Hasek, Hawerchuk vs. Scott Stevens... If MSG shows these games all thought the rest of the hockey "season", the owners and the players can go hang fire. I'd just as soon watch these vintage games, despite knowing who won.

From what I've seen so far this morning, my part of WNY has dodged a really big bullet. The winds were lower than expected and the rain wasn't too bad (except for a heavy downpour about 7:10 this AM). Right now, I'm actually seeing some sunshine in downtown Buffalo. Power outages were minimal in the area and aside from a ton of leaves and twigs (and the occasional smallish tree branch) lying around, we've made out pretty well. We've had much scarier windstorms many times in the past. Thanks to the big guy upstairs for watching out for us on this one. However, the reports from NYC, Jersey and Maryland aren't so good. Thoughts and prayers go out to everyone down that way.

Wow - that is not good. Well-wishes to all in the path of the storm....

Truly frightening. Perhaps instead of a poll tax, there should be a poll test - if you can't answer some basic current events questions, you can't vote. (Oops! Sorry, that sounded way too Tea Party). Seriously, I would like to have had the interviewer ask these same folks the reasons they were voting for Obama. Personality? Good speaking voice? They saw him on Leno? (In the interest of fair play, I'm sure there are just as many Romney supporters out there who are just as clueless.)

Frankly, I think that in the third overtime any goal that wasn't blatantly illegal would have counted (and I mean blatantly, like a kick-in). As for Hull, someone needs to carve a pumpkin showing him cheating on his wife with Hasek. THAT would be funny right there!

After debate # 2, they interviewed some people on the radio about what they thought of the debate. One woman (an older lady from what she sounded like) put it into perspective (and I'm paraphrasing a bit): "President Obama talked about the same things he did four years ago, but he hasn't done anything about them." Oof - Mitt pulls out the election in a squeaker...

How sad is it that Brett Hull needs to send out something like this to stay relevant. He's retired from the sport, the team he won the Cup with now sucks and there is a lockout going on. And as was pointed out above, the event happened 14 years ago. Most of us Sabre fans have let it go: why can't Hull? And to have somebody carve a pumpkin like that? For what purpose? The only thing worse than a sore loser is a sore winner.

I was a little worried when I saw the police officers, but yeah, that was pretty awesome!

The fact that Romney held his own in all 3 debates gives him more juice; I think most folks (me included) saw him as an easy mark for the President in the debates. The last ABC News poll before the debate yesterday showed Obama at 49%, Romney at 48%...a statistical dead heat. We could be in for more "hanging chads"...

There's plenty of blame to go around - this is a team sport and when one part of the team fails (the late INT), another needs to pick up the slack (a stop by the D). When that failed, the offense had a chance to redeem itself by getting close enough for a field goal try...nope. So, it's a team loss... Aside from all of the other comments above (all valid), what disturbs me most is the team's lack of intensity. When the ball is snapped, a good defensive team (like the 49ers) goes after the quarterback like a hungry lion goes for a lame zebra. The Bills defense looks like they don't care (and maybe they don't). If you converted all of the Bills' intensity into electricity, you'd have just enough to toast bread...lightly. At least we know that next Sunday, the Bills can't lose...

It would almost be worth losing the season if the league would lose the "dead wood" franchises. Almost.

You're welcome - also, since it is going right into the bloodstream, it seems to work a little faster than pills, too.

I use a sublingual liquid B-complex made by Nature's Bounty (available at Rite-Aid and other pharmacies, I'm sure). I have a little problem absorbing B-vitamins through my gut, so the sublingual makes sense. The taste is pretty good - kind of like a fake citrusy-orange. You put a dropperful under the tongue, hold it there for 30 seconds and then swallow the rest.

Except that most people in the "real world" don't have salaries that range from the multiple hundreds of thousands up to multiple millions per year. A 3% raise for me comes out to less than $1900 BEFORE taxes. Oof.

Falling out of the sex swing? (I apologize; I'm just indulging a light fantasy....) Seriously, I hope you feel better soon! My pet peeve is when two people who have perfectly servicable office just steps away feel it necessary to have an impromptu meeting in the stairwell, completely blocking passage. At least walk the few steps up (or down) to a landing so people could squeeze by!

I used to donate platelets at Roswell Park - back a few years ago around election time, George Bush (the elder) was to make a stop at the Donor Center. So, I booked an appointment on the day of his visit. Unfortunately, I picked a chair way across the room from where he entered, so I got to see him but not "meet" him. Still pretty cool, though. Oh, and yeah, it's a Friday before a long weekend and I'm going to a co-worker's wedding on Sunday so it's pretty F'n fantastic!

I don't know of this has been brought up previously, but only twice since professional teams have competed for the Stanley Cup has it not been awarded. The first time was in 1919 when the Montreal-Seattle series was cancelled due to the flu epidemic (a number of players were hospitalized; one died). The only other time was...in 2005 as a result of the lockout. Wow, that fact alone should embarrass the hell out of the players AND owners. But, as we all know, money trumps all...

Actually, my hatred for Bettman has little, if anything to do with the CBA or negotiations. I just think he is a smug, snotty little SOB.... I'm on the fence right now...I've got a lot more going on in my life that comes before hockey. If the season is wiped out, I have plenty of other things to keep me occupied. I can live without the NHL - can the NHL survive without its fans? Well, if the season is cancelled and a player is no longer under contract, they just might have to become a Wal-Mart greeter to put pork chops on the dinner table...
-
Yes, the timing is perfect for some wealthy guys to start a new pro hockey league. There are a number of guys who have tried buying NHL franchises (and were rebuffed; Balsillie comes to mind) who would love to stick it to the NHL. Go for the markets the NHL has been ignoring (or who have lost teams): Quebec City, Hamilton, Seattle, Houston, Hartford.... To quote Frederick Frankenstein (that's FronkenSTEEN!), "IT.....COULD....WORK!!" :w00t:

Yeah, I know the thing would never fly, but thinking about it makes me smile.... :)

Can season ticket owners file a class-action law suit against the teams for breach of contract when the regular games get cancelled? I would suggest asking for exactly $3.3 billion in damages.....

In my mind, I've already written off the season. I can't believe that the league isn't getting heat from sponsors and broadcast "partners" like CBC and NBC. If the season goes, there'll be no Winter Classic, no playoffs, no Hockey Night in Canada. After the furor on social media with the replacement NFL refs, I can't believe the league (and the NHLPA) haven't noted the ill humor fans are in. It really would be something to see if fans could organize a one game "strike" once play resumes. Of course, if tickets for the game were already sold, it would be a hollow demonstration.

Maybe it's time to try to launch a second top-level pro hockey league, a la the old WHA. There are probably enough maverick rich guys (like Mark Cuban, pun intended) and enough access to cable sports networks to set up a six or eight team league. Sign some of the top-level NHL talent, play a shorter schedule and bring back the AVCO Cup. Yeah, the end result would probably be the same as before; after a couple of years the NHL would absorb a few of the teams. In the meantime, fans would get to watch real top-flite hockey and maybe it would scare the NHL owners enough so that they don't let CBA's expire without having a new one in place. Yeah, I'm not holding my breath thinking this would happen, but it's Monday and sometimes the mind wanders...

Yeah, there were a few of those in yesterday's games... Friggit, just last weekend (after the Bills suck-fest and the Ravens drubbing of the Bengals), I made a decision. I figured I'd throw my support behind the Ravens this season since they have a pretty decent team (plus I like the city and the Ravens uniforms are probably the coolest in the league). I even ordered up a Ravens jersey...so this week, the Bills win big and the Ravens lose. If it weren't for bad luck, etc.... :censored:
