GDT - Sabres @ Predators - December 3, 2018 - 8pm EST

I mostly saw the second, where they looked quite good. Real-time SAT data indicated that the Predators fairly controlled the 3rd though (?). -
Fwiw: What I’ve been harping on is the suggestion that Allen’s and Clay’s errors in that play were essentially equivalent. Allen’s error came in failing to flawlessly pull off a spectacular play. Clay’s errors were more fundamental, imo. (If Clay comes back to his QB more and moves his feet better, he makes that catch look easy.)

This is ill-wrought and comes off as condescending. Correct on all counts.
-
As if the seconds within which he actually threw the ball could exist in abstracted isolation from the rest of the play that led up to it. The takery that views Allen as making a really bad (even pitiful!) throw is utterly perplexing to me. It was a wobbly throw that could have been better. But it was good enough. You know what wasn't good enough? Clay's footwork. #stumbletrip

It was an imperfect throw made in connection with a remarkable effort. It was good enough. And it was catchable, which, under the circumstances, was impressive.

Really good post. I especially like this excerpted bit. Along those lines: The field-angle clip of Daboll collapsing to the ground when Clay failed to haul in that long ball was really something. Yep.

Do agree with this. It's pretty remarkable. McCoy says it all the time, and I credit: The guy is just a baller. I'm still very much unsure whether he can be a good NFL quarterback over time. If it does not come together for him, it will not be for lack of effort. Interesting. He's certainly absurdly competitive and inherently self-confident like Flutie.

Over in Europe, a Swedish prosecutor has charged the player who obliterated Paille with a blindside hit. https://deadspin.com/sweden-will-prosecute-hockey-player-for-blind-side-hit-1830738327

I think I’m done with the ROR debates, too. But sometimes lively tangential debates arise, and need to play out, in an unrelated thread. Telling people to take it to a dedicated thread isn’t always practicable. It’s not unlike the difference between an honest fight erupting from the flow of play between 2 welterweights and a staged fight between 2 enforcers (not that those happen anymore).

I understand what you're saying. There's value nonetheless in parents saying "that's off limits because the language is so foul [or insert other reason]." There's a message being conveyed and reinforced. Also, FTFY.

I have not gone back and re-watched it, but I thought the GTG was an unfortunate, fluky one. I think I posted "fluky" in real-time in this thread. The puck was bouncing, became hard to keep track of, and Hutton lost sight of it. It happens. So he tried to cover every likely angle from which an attack could come. And Pavelski made a good play on it. Not for nothing: Ray failed utterly to make a fair call on what happened on that goal. He remarked on the replay that Hutton "got there in time" (or something like that) but that Pavelski somehow managed to squeeze it through. Hutton had no idea where the puck was. And that was not really his fault -- bad luck. Interesting. And each in their own, very different way, right?

Lord, is this ever true. Our younger ones were recently allowed to enter the realm of Fortnite (or however it's spelled) through their game system. God, do they ever love that game. And I can see the appeal. Another thing they've asked permission to do is watch Fortnite videos on YouTube. Which, oookkkaaaaayyyy. I promptly put an end to that, at least as a matter of policy (I am sure they still sneak them), because holy moses are those videos ever foul-mouthed.

I know I joined July 2006 - after the star-crossed (bacteria-ridden) Cup run.

Can't say I'm familiar with it. I'll look it up later.

I admit that I take some enjoyment out of deploying the Scottish/Irish phonetic spelling of an F-bomb. But it's far more important to abide by our host's kindly-stated request. I'll do better.

That's a lovely tribute and confession. Few and far between here can offer that quality of content. There's something that's been pinging around in my head for some time, and I still can't quite articulate it. In essence, it distills itself to a few thoughts that I regularly have when enjoying something like last night's game: What if this is it? You know what? Maybe this is it. What more, what else am I waiting for? It's sort of a variation on the old saw "life is what happens when you're busy making other plans." Maybe it's, "joy in sports fandom is what happens when you're waiting for the championship clinching win." I'm sure it will be amazing when it arrives. But what we're enjoying now is more than sufficient for the day.
