  1. Let him improve his own level of play and then his words will actually have meaning. At this juncture, he has no room to talk about anything being a joke.

I follow what you're saying. I think he can be a serviceable Dman in this league, but to expect him to be the shutdown defensive dman - as was the case this year - is only asking for trouble.

And he had some really, really miserable games. Of that there is no doubt. And while it clearly wasn't enough, he did do his best. He tried. He put forth the effort and gave it everything he had. While he had some brutal nights, he cared and he showed it.

I respect that in a player and that's why I don't mind what he said.

  2. We don't know this, but I disagree. He's trying to make a public statement against tanking next season which the old front office has nothing to do with.

I love how protected Mike Weber, a scrub, is on here while a young and talented player like Hodgson gets ripped.

Weber is 6/7 IMO. If that means "scrub" to you, that's cool. But I don't think anybody's protecting him, we just don't think his comments crossed the line you did.

PS: I like CoHo so far and think his game will really start to come together when he has better players around him.

  3. Zibanejad, Zack Smith for Ottawa... all of the deadline moves that brought back young forwards were for bigger guys (Deslauriers, Carrier, Fasching)... again, this is pure conjecture, but I think he likes size up front.

I think he said at the time he was hired - or shortly thereafter - that he preferred players with size..

  4. From another thread; it more properly belongs in this one anyway.

Well, whatever may have been said in the past, he definitely is NOT talking about purposefully tanking right now. In fact, he's saying that it's impracticable because coaches and players want to win. "What guy is going to play badly so he can lose his job the next year to McDavid?" (Paraphrased.)

Maybe, but it was pretty clearly stated that you need your Hodgsons and your Girgensons to get better and that isn't going to happen if you don't get them some support.

I'd also say that if you spent most of your time in the bottom half of this year's roster, you probably should be looking for another job next year.

I got that from him too.

    Thanks 11.

That's good news for the anti-tankers among us!

  5. Never even kind of insinuated anything like this, but, hell, it's fun to just say stuff...

Fact is he failed miserably in the role he was given.

That's true, but it's not on him - he was asked to play too big a role on this team.

  6. Who doesn't want great players. That's what every team wants but the good organizations either draft them in the top of the draft unless you are the Red Wings and either find them in Europe! We all seen when Buffalo drafts in the teens what kind of players they get. Some People want this this team to tank others don't. You don't want the tank be prepared to see what you seen from a lot of Buffalo teams and that's an also-ran with no chance at the Cup. Management is sold on the Pittsburgh model of rebuilding. This would have been sped up if Darcy would have started the fire sale last year and had a shot at MacKinnon. All these late runs of being mediocre killed draft positions numerous times.

The only flaw is I watch the games to be entertained, not see them win the Cup. Sure, I'd love it if they were to win it all, and I know that's the ultimate goal of every player in the NHL. But it's not my goal. Not at the cost of watching a season like this one.

  7. I wouldn't be surprised if the reason he told them to not fight has to do with this joke of a season, the desire to be seen as an x's and o's type of coach and not just the coach of a goon team, and his kid's career being ended early due to concussions, and respect for the game (the anti-Reggie from Slapshot).

Not necessarily always in that order and most likely with emphasis on different things at different times, but I don't think there's just one reason for him telling his guys to pull back.

  8. It's not difficult to sort out guys, the team has mailed it in. The players are not dumb, they know this is the season of the tank. Why lay it on the line when the fanbase and management have a "lose at all cost" attitude?

I think it will be different next year as things start to get turned around with the young guys getting another year under their belt, AHL guys coming up, and talent being added via trade at the draft.

Next year, when the Sabres have a chance and the games truly matter, I think we'll see a different Ted behind the bench.

  9. Nolan must coach them to be soft.

Seriously, though, what were they to do about Rinaldo? He was tossed an instant after the play happened. I didn't watch much of the game, so I can't comment on the being pushed around all night bit.

In that incident, there wasn't much they could do. To Rinaldo, anyway.

I was surprised Scott didn't ragdoll somebody, but we've discussed elsewhere how timid his game has become since the suspension...

  10. :( A telephone hearing is ridiculous considering they'd throw the book at any Sabre who did something similar.

Looking at last night's lineup, who would have even stepped up? Beyond Weber, Scott, and Deslauriers, we dressed a team full of rookies and smallish finesse types. And, the Flyers did whatever they wanted all night while the Sabres got pushed around. We're back to severely lacking in size and grit.

If I'm Ted, I let Scott know he has free reign or the rest of the season...

  11. Typical bush league NHL crap. It will never change as long as that gutless weasel Bettman is running things.

I disagree. I think there is a culture of cronyism and manipulation at the league level. Starting with Bettman isn't a bad idea, but I'm not so sure cutting off the head alone would kill this snake.

It's amazing hockey is as popular as it is with everything the NHL does to undermine the sport.

Your reaction is 100% on the mark. Rinaldo's hit last night was far worse than Scott's hit on Loui Eriksson that drew a 7 game suspension. A phone hearing is completely nonsensical comical to me.

    Fixed

  12. Great post Glove.

For his past flaws on the ice, Stafford seems like a decent guy.

I think that's a real good reading of his journey, and I hope a life lesson earned.

I think we're all hopeful Glove nailed it, but the way Staff's career has been - a few peaks surrounded by some pretty deep valleys - I'm not so sure he can sustain it.

And I'd be okay with it if Staff proved me wrong.

  13. Ovechkin may be the first player ever to lead the league in goals (he has 48) and be the worst in plus/minus (he's at the bottom now with -36). Do you trade for a guy like that anyway? He was a Sabres fan when he was a kid. Seems like something Pegula would do.

I hadn't heard he was a Sabres fan as a kid. Was it because of Mogilny?

I'd love to see him in Bflo, but I imagine the asking price would be too steep. And since he won't become an UFA until 2021, I'm not going to hold my breath. But he is an exciting player to watch.
