  1. That's pretty serious if true. Link?

    Will this do?

The Boston Bruins targeted Orpik early and often following a hit to forward Loui Eriksson in the opening minute, clearly believing that Orpik owed them a fight because of his hit.

Orpik's hit, which saw his right shoulder plant Eriksson in the chest, was deemed legal. Still, the Bruins — notably enforcer Shawn Thornton — challenged Orpik to fisticuffs on numerous occasions, apparently because Orpik chose to aggressively hit one of the Bruins marquee players.

  2. And what about Claude Julian ? He put Thornton on the ice to get retribution for the hit on Erickson which was clean imo. He apparently put him on the ice every time Orpik was out til he got him. The league has set a precedent in situations like this. I don't believe in punishing player selection but you have to wonder.

Interesting. I don't think punishing for player selection is appropriate either, but as we know, that ship has sailed - provided the coach in question is not from Boston, evidently.

  3. Having seen the knee to Marchand, I feel badly about what I said up thread - it was not part of a hockey play as I assumed it was, it was an unnecessary and cheap play by Neil and I don't think anybody, even a ###### gobbler like Marchand, should have to deal with that crap.

This video of the Erikcson hit is pretty interesting. Orpick blew him up and it didn't look to me like he had the puck, and then note Charra going head hunting at 18 seconds, leaving his feet and elbow out - but of course it was Charra so there will be no call from the league.

    http://ndgoon.blogsp...-after-hit.html

The NHL, and the players themselves, need to reign this crap in before somebody gets killed. I love the physical nature of hockey, but this stuff is getting out of hand.

  4. I was going to watch one of the football games after the Sabres, but I think I might watch that game.

Charra picked up a double minor for butt ending Kunitz, both Lucic and Engullend got majors at the same time for boarding each other (and I have no idea how that call could have been made), Marchand picked up a double minor for high sticking Kunitz (he must have a bullseye on him), and Despres picked up a headbutt on Krejci, and 2 minutes later Iginla picked up a headbutt on Despres.

Sounds like it'll be entertaining. Plus, Marchand got kneed in the head, and that makes me smile.

  5. Richie Dunn gets no bold love from you?

I saw the name and thought it sounded familiar - he was an Amerk, wasn't he?

Guy had at least 4 concussions; cut 'im some slack. :P

    :clapping:

...and I'm just looking for a league to sue so I can retire in the lap of luxury!

Heh, Seth Jones with the fro and the five-necked guitar.

How could so many professional athletes be so totally devoid of rhythm?

I have that CD and I dig TSO (and Savatage), but that song has been ruined by the gotta go getta Garmin xmas commercials. It's all I think of when I hear it. Bastards...

  6. The Toronto Bills would be just okay - I wouldn't have anywhere near the emotion with which I root for the the Buffalo Bills. If they move someplace else (LA, London), screw 'em.

And you're right C_V, it would be nonsensical for them to keep the nickname and logo. The only scenario in which I can see them doing so would be if they named the team the Buffalos or Bisons as some sort of homage to WNY fans and the club's history. And let's face it, it'd be a smooth marketing move but it's highly unlikely.

All this thinking about the Bills leaving Buffalo is bringing me down, but it very well could become a reality within a decade....

  7. But for those 19 games, the NHL did not make it crystal clear the effects of head injuries he could suffer. Maybe they should all continue this down further and sue everyone down to their parents who at one point put them in Hockey without properly informing them of the risks of a head injury.........

I sure didn't see this coming, and honestly, that's where I kind of thought hockey players were different.

As a kid playing from the late 70s until the mid 80s, I was well aware of the dangers involved with the game. I had 4 diagnosed concussions and likely several more where my bell was rung that were undiagnosed concussions.

But I knew the risk and like any person involved in a high speed and/or contact sport, you never think it will happen to you. But when it does happen to you (it's got to happen to somebody, after all), you can now sue?

    Ridiculous

  8.

“The NHL persists in this conduct to date by, among other things, refusing to ban

fighting and body checking and by continuing to employ hockey players whose main function is

to fight or violently body check players on the other team (“Enforcers”).”

On twitter, Pierre LeBrun says it's Gary Leeman, Brad Aitken, Darren Banks, Curt Bennett, Richard Dunn, Warren Holmes, Bob Manno, Blair Stewart, Morris Titanic and Rick Vaive.

  9. Bon Jovi rumors are the usual annual Toronto nonsense:

    http://espn.go.com/n...o-bills-refuted

    3

Yep. And I'm pretty sure NFL bylaws prohibit a corporation like Roger's or MLSE from being a majority owner.

I don't consider this type of talk during the run up to be a necesarily bad thing as it could potentially lead to Torontonians one day showing up and cheering for the "home" team.

IF the Bills were to end up in TO with the same colors (colours?), nickname, and logo, would any of you still consider yourselves Bills fans?

  10. No. In effect Nolan was given a I'm-not-sure-if-this-will-work-so-we'll-keep-it-short contract. He was offered a job. I don't know in what universe being offered a job = being fired by the boss that was fired first.

Get real weave. He was a Jack Adams winner and was offered a frickin' 1-year deal. Yeah, it's not being fired, but it's about as close as you can come to being told "Don't let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya."

Nolan was offered jobs and turned them down, but I agree that he was blacklisted after what happened with Muckler then Regier. He also spent time focusing on his young family for awhile.

I'm betting Kaleta is back REAL soon.

Yep. Anything more than 10-14 days and I'll be surprised.

Nolan's game was a lot like Kaleta's. If anybody can bring Patty K along the right way, I gotta think it's Teddy.

  11. Here's the real important thing to note on Nolan. The Sabres let him go in 1997. He didn't land another real coaching gig until Moncton of the Q hired him in 2005. Now there are stories that he had random offers here and there, but what exactly happens to keep a guy away from coaching for 8 years? This guy was poison, there's no doubt in my mind. Hopefully he has straightened that out.

To be fair, it should also be noted that many hockey people believed Nolan was blackballed for having the gumption to stand up to the wanna-be "legend" John Muckler, who is perhaps one of the most over rated men in hockey.

And then there are theories about his heritage that are well-documented from his playing days. But I personally think it had more to do with Muck's good ol' boy network than anything else.

It might take a few weeks, and it might cause some pretty messed up lineups for a little while, but I'm looking forward to watching guys figure out that if you aren't competing every shift, you won't be getting a shift. And I suspect Drew Stafford is crapping bricks.

  12. I thought they would have gotten more.

Darcy got two top picks next year and an underrated goal scorer who they may or may not be able to re-sign, the Isles got Vanek's services until he signs with Minnesota in 8 months. I think it's a terrific trade.

Say what you will about Darcy, he gets A LOT in return when he makes trades.

  13. No doubt I am a homer - it's really hard for me to be objective about my teams. That said, why is he suspended? For making a hockey play?

I wholly appreciate trying to take the hits that cross the line out of the game, and I'm fully aware that Kaleta has delivered more than a couple of those hits. But I just don't see where he did this time. I believe he was trying to light up Johnson, no doubt, but it wasn't a cheap shot and he wasn't head hunting. Not to my eyes, anyway.

And I voted keep him. He has heart, hustle, and entertainment value. This year's team needs all of those things.

  14. Hittin up Blink 182 at blue cross this coming tuesday, other than that not much planned as of yet, I'm more of a spur of the moment concert guy myself unless its someone i've wanted to see for a while.

Definitely a rock n Roll enthusiast at heart but i picked up a mixing table for my laptop about a year ago and have really started getting into the electronic / house scene as well, so i wouldn't mind seeing some shows like that.

What the Blink 182 lady looks like today...

  15. My kid is complaining that he wants to see Shinedown later this Summer.

Shinedown reminds me a lot of Godsmack, whose earlier stuff I like a lot: The bands sound very similar and pretty much each song sounds like every other one.

I saw Uncle Ted last Summer. He still puts on a high energy set and can melt a guitar even today but be prepared to be offended if your politics aren't in line with his. His shows resemble Tea Party revivals between songs. Wear a thick skin and chalk it up as the kind of entertainment like your old uncle Tony provides at holiday dinners and you'll have a blast.

I've never seen him and am looking forward to Stranglehold live and in the flesh. As for his politics, we do not see eye-to-eye but I know going in what to expect.

In the words of the great philosopher David Lee Roth circa 1982, "Van Halen is about parties, fun, and girls. Some bands try to send messages with their songs and with their shows. If you want to send a message, just use Western Union." In other words, "Ted, just shut up and play."

  16. If my doctor misdiagnosed your injury so it was never treated and properly repaired, and then I turned around and gave you crap for not playing as well as you and I thought you could have/should have /would have liked to, well, you'd be PO'd too.

I have no problem with Hodgson giving Vancouver brass a hard time. That said, I think Giles and Vigneult are looking for something to take the fans' attention away from their shoddy performance so they can keep fiddling about while Rome burns. The fact the 'Nucks have been as good as they've been is depsite those two arses, not because of them. As a fan of the Canucks, I hope they both get dumped very soon...

  17. As some of you guys know, Vancouver is my 2nd favorite team. It's safe to say I've watched more 'Nuck games than anyone else here, and here's what I can tell you about Hodgson: He's fully recovered from surgery to repair a ruptured disc as evident by his play this year. He's a decent skater. Not great, but decent, and certainly decent-enough to fit in Buffalo's preferred push-the-puck breakout offense. He has some intangibles when he has the puck and it's obvious he can see the ice really well, he just "gets it." He has a strong slapshot and a deceptively quick release on wristers and snap shots. Plus, and this is something we haven't seen much of in Buffalo, he finds the back of the net. He's makes good reads on the rush and can maintain possesion when in the O zone. He isn't a power forward or banger but he's shown some feistiness and a willingness to go to the ugly areas of the ice. And while it's unlikely he'll ever be a force in his own end, he doesn't shy away from playing in the D zone and shows hustle on the backcheck. And lastly, so you can sound like the smartest guy in the pub, his last name is pronounced Hodson - the g is silent.

While Kass may very well end up having a better career, the amount of talent and finish Hodgson brings to the Sabres TODAY makes this a solid trade. Hodgson will be a very good player for a long time and as others have said, toughness is easier to find in the offseason than skill, and Hodgson is years ahead of Kass.

Trust me, you'll fall in love with this kid, just give him a chance.

It's downright funny looking back through the first few pages of this thread. One person posted twice that he was "raging" over the trade.

But now that you've all had a chance to see a bit of Hodgson, is he a step above Kass? Do you guys like his game?

  18. What do you call reports from inside the team that they were actively shopping him since December? Their 20yo 1st round pick from 2 years ago. Sounds like giving up on to me. The fans seem to have a majority opinion that he wasn't what was advertised and don't mind seeing him go.

I would have much rather had them beg Calgary to give up Iginla and make Kassian the centerpiece of that package. Or use it as part of a Getzlaf deal. Both those teams were listening back then, then pulled everyone off the market.

Sounds to me like they recognized they had player other teams coveted at a postion of relative depth that could be traded to secure a point-producing centerman.

  19. Umm....Darcy wanted a first but settled for Hodgson because Vancouver also valued the pick more. According to our boardly sources.

And yes....would rather have Pyatt at $1 million over Stafford at $4 million....

You guys try so hard to paint me in a corner. If some posters held the team as accountable as they try to catch me on something, we may have won a cup by now.

Yes, fans whining on a message board is exactly what wins Stanley Cups.

  20. I apologize because I have only read the last few posts but all of this assumes that Kassian wants to be the big tough guy. Since the trade I have heard Peca, Ray, Strahan and Roenick all imply that Kassian wants to be a scorer as opposed to an enforcer and that it will be incumbent on him to understand his role once he gets to the Canucks.

I agree with DD that this is his opportunity. I just don't know that he has the desire.

Only time will tell for sure; I'm inclined to believe he doesn't based on what I've seen of his play in Buffalo and read of his play in Rochester. And that's why I can't help but think he'll be under a fair amount of pressure. Vancouver is my 2nd favorite, so I hope he develops into the beast that most Canuck fans think he will.

    But I do have reservations...
