  1. Lucic is a great player, he's a rare commodity that few teams have, and I'd love him to be a Sabre...and there is zero chance I'd give up this year's or next year's 1st for him, let alone both. Insanity, especially given where the Sabres are at in the rebuilding process.

A guy like Lucic is one of those complimentary players GMTM talks about. A concern of mine would be whether Lucic can play the same style of game and still get away with it elsewhere.

He only got one game for cross-checking Lapierre in the back of the head, the two games he got for smoking Rinaldo, and avoided countless other suspensions for his serial spearing (much less crap like running over Miller) is because he is in Boston.

I don't know if it's because Colie Campbell's kid is there or if it's because Jacobs is the director of the Board of Governors, but that club, Thornton aside, sure seems to get a lot of favorable non-calls.

I'm generally not one for tin foil hat conspiracies, but I do believe that if Lucic was a Sabre, he'd spend more games on suspension than dressed.

  2. I used to love me some schadenfreude when I was younger, but these days I try to suppress it and instead try to send out positive vibes... That said, any time the Bruins or Flyers lose, I do feel a little better about the world and my place in it.

  3. Good write-up on Lucic's nonsense in the TO paper.

No need for anyone to rise to that jagoff's defense. You can hate to lose all you want, but that does not excuse your failure to have respect for a time-honored tradition. And if you're not in a place where you can honor it, then just skip it. If you instead make the incredibly self-centered choice to participate and then proceed to tarnish that tradition, then, seriously, please go fukc yourself forever. And, by all means, stay off my favorite team while you're at it.

    Agreed.

Lucic: "I'm not the first guy to do it, I'm not the last guy to do it, and I'm not sorry for it."

Agree with that, too. But it doesn't make it right.

  4. If the conventional wisdom is that Nolan gets the axe once the team is closer to contending — at the expedient moment — and you'd be looking for a Bylsma then, why not put the coaching piece in place now?

    Bylsma? Oh hell no.

With the exception of his first year when he was still using Therrien's system, Bylsma as done nothing but lose control of his players and watch the team underachieve. No no no no no no way I'd want him anywhere near the Sabres - now or in the future.

  5. I know I am. And I hated him before this series.

Yep, he definitely seemed to turn a corner in his game. Still physical, cut down on the cheap shots, and remained above the line in terms of handshake-gate with the attitude of a winner. I'm impressed.

  6. They gave up 2 draft picks next year for a wide receiver, in a draft deep at wide receiver. And then they moved their only seasoned wide reciever for replacement 4th next year. Desperation can be good or bad. They had to do something, but my spidey senses say this was a huge gamble. I would love, love, love this move if JK was QB. EJ at QB may never realize SW's potential. And of course SW could bring out EJ's potential too.

Mike Williams is experienced and Watkins, Wood, and Goodwin are all more physically gifted than Stevie.

I don't hate SJ - in fact I felt kind of bad for him being miscast in the #1 WR role when he just didn't have the tools - but it was time to turn the page and move on with the younger guys.

  7. Grow some balls how? By giving up my tickets? How would that demonstrate balls?

It could be that I read it differently than you wrote it, but here's what I saw: You paid, you went, you received nothing out of it, and the team is to blame for that. "Woe is me" and "how could they do this to me after all I've done!" The "grow a pair" means stop allowing yourself to be a victim. If that means dumping your tix, then so be it, but just stop with the "I've given all I have to give" routine.

And to be clear -- it's not the failure to win that makes me feel betrayed -- it's the organization's failure (not that of the individual players or coaches) to try.

I think you are mistaking ambivalence for incompetence.

  8. <snip>

I care because I'm from Buffalo, I've been a STH for more years than I care to remember and I have given them everything I had to give as a fan, and have in return received stunningly poor performance for the last 15 years -- and, most infuriatingly, that poor performance IMHO has been the result of them not really trying as an organization.

    <snip>

nfreeman, you're probably a cool dude in the real world and we'd probably have a good talk about football, hockey, and Bflo. But I gotta tell you, the bolded part above is not flattering.

Did you enjoy any aspect of any of those games? The tailgates? Hanging with friends? If not, what's the point?

You renew your tix like it's some act of great charity, feel betrayed for whatever reason when they don't win, but repeat the process for 15 years. Whose fault is that?

Seriously dude, it makes me want to buy you a beer and tell you to suck it up and grow some balls.

  9. I'm with Ink on this one. Gruden knows his stuff. He doesn't fluff up certain players like Pierre Maguire does with lame, run of the mill adjectives, he's analytical.

Chucky doesn't use run of the mill adjectives? His vocabulary is limited to run of the mill adjectives.

    Yes. Dear god yes.

Sammy Watkins is on WGR550 right now for those interested.

I heard him with Murph about an hour after the pick. Said he was excited to be a Bill, followed the Bills as a kid because he liked the colors, knows who Perry Tuttle is, liked Bledsoe and Moulds, and is looking forward to getting to work.

Did he say anything of note this morning?

  10. So say you take Ebron at 9, would you take Benjamin at 41? Manuel already knows him and it would make your WR core that much better but it leaves OL holes.

I'd rather see them take Matthews or Lewan if they are there (Robinson will probably be the first OT off the board, right?). Ebron might end up being the greatest TE in the history of TEs for all I know, but I think it's more important to address OT than TE.

That said, Ebron is a fascinating prospect and I wouldn't flip out if he and Benjamin are Bills tomorrow morning. I've raised an occasional eyebrow with some of Bflo's picks over the years, but I like to think the pros know more than me so I don't get too worked up about it.

What say you? How would you feel if Benjamin and Ebron are the two guys selected tonight?

  11. 1) Watch as much of the first period as I can

    2) Go to friends and watch picks 1-10 while checking scores

    3) Go home and continue watching hockey

I have seen on quite a few mocks that have Kelvin Benjamin available in the 2nd. If that were true and the bills do not take a WR in the 1st would you take him if available?

I would and I'd be surprised if he's still available at 41

  12. Regardless of position, I'm just hoping they pick a guy that will be able to contribute immediately

Just curious, what're everyone's plans this evening? Are you going to:

    1. Watch the draft and check the boxscores periodically, or

    2. Watch the B's/Habs game and keep up with the draft online, or

    3. What draft? #becauseitstheCup

    4. Neither/have other plans

I'll be going with Option 2.

  13. not really. he had to push her pretty hard. unless she was about to physically injure him there isn't a good excuse. That's my own personal opinion though.

I think we can all agree that striking and/or physically engaging somebody in the real world is generally pretty stupid. And it's even more so when it's a male doing it to a female. But I don't think it necessarily makes him an ######.

It might make him guilty of losing his temper or being hammered or losing temper while being hammered or having anger management issues or whatever.

If it turns out it's a chronic thing, I might change my mind, but it could just be a one-time drunken lapse in judgment, couldn't it?

And as d4rk said, now they both have to deal with the consequences of what ended up being a pretty ugly night.

(NB, if I wasn't 100% clear, please understand I am not saying violence against women is in any way excusable).

  14. I am a child of rape. My mother, being Roman Catholic did not believe in abortion. Don't send mom out, don't buy her extravagant or expensive gifts. The greatest gift of all is to spend the day with her. Memories of togetherness both past and present are the key to love, regardless of money spent.

    My 2 cents is all.

My mom passed away when I was in my (very) early 20s and I would give every last penny I have away if it meant I'd get to spend one more day with her. It's nice to see you and the others taking advantage of the time you do have together.

  15. That's just incomplete (and therefore incorrect); the IHL stood side-by-side with the AHL as a top farm league for a period of time.

I know the IHL tried very hard over a few years to make themselves a peer of the 'A' but thought they were considered a half-step behind in terms of overall skill and lacked the prestige of the 'A.'

And I didn't realize anybody considered the 'I' to be the primary feeder league. My own personal bias at work, I suppose.

EDIT: In somewhat related news, former 'Yotes CEO Mike Neely will now be the director of the Fiesta Bowl. http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/2014/05/05/nealy-tabbed-as-fiesta-bowl-executive-director/8722863/

  16. From the article:

The Islanders' International Hockey League affiliate (the IHL used to be the NHL's main feeder) won back-to-back championships -- the Denver Grizzlies in 1994-95 and Utah Grizzlies in 1995-96).

    Wait. What?
