  1. They probably wouldn't do that because the Elmira College D3 hockey teams are the Soaring Eagles.

I did not know they even had a team, and yeah, I guess that would keep them from going with Eagles...

The alliteration in the nickname appeals to me but outside of cheesy sounding names better suited for cheerleading teams (Elmira Express or Elmira Explosion), I can't come up with anything.

EDIT: Use the 'M' in Elmira and name them the Elmira Monarchs with sweaters modeled on the Sabres originals. The logo would be shield-shaped to pay homage to the Amerks and represent a coat of arms and have a crown in the middle with "Elmira" on it. I don't know if it would be popular, but it's fun thinking about. Now all I need to do is hit the lottery and make it reality.

  2. One of those neat-to-look-at-but-doesn't-really-mean-anything things

Facebook made a map based on which team had the most likes in each U.S. state and Canadian province. While it might not be the most scientific study, the results seem as though they could be more or less accurate. In Canada, the lone local team to make the playoffs, the Montreal Canadiens, captured the interest of most of the country.

The Chicago Blackhawks stole America’s heart, having the most likes in 10 states. Most of the other teams picked up at least their home state, with a few stealing fans from neighboring states.

  3. This could get interesting: McDonagh's coming back from his busted up shoulder and the Flyers have evidently placed a bullseye on him.

“The 30 minutes that he plays have to be hard minutes,” Berube said. “Not only being hit, but you have to make him work. Grind him out. Grind down there. Make him work. Make him stay long shifts out there.

“Yeah, he’s a little banged up,” Hartnell said. “You definitely want to be physical on him. You don’t want to take a dumb penalty or roughing penalty. You want to be clean and hard on him and make sure he is working hard for every inch of ice out there with or without the puck.

“I’d hit him if I’m out there,” Simmonds replied. “He’s a defenseman who is going to play a lot of minutes in this series ... You want to put pucks in his corner. You want to punish him physically.

  4. I just looked at your picks; if it's St. Louis and Boston, it probably will be a low-scoring series.

I wish the league weren't making us wait until Friday for the Detroit-Boston series. On the other hand, there will be something to watch on Easter.

Agreed on both counts. Bos-Det will be an interesting series.

One thing I came to realize when making my picks is the second round pairings weren't re-seeded depending on who I chose. It never dawned on me that this year there is no re-seeding going into the second round; it's a fixed ladder like the old days. I like it!

I liked the reseeding after Round 1, but it is kind of neat for this non college basketball guy to get to mess with a playoff bracket for once. It makes for a lot of what ifs and I have grown to like the idea!

  5. I'm a little confused each time I see Deslauriers included in this list of good young prospects. He's a bit older and now out of his ELC. I doubt we'd have to be too worried about him clearing waviers, but at this stage in his career, I'd say he's probably at the point where he will be up in the NHL.

I read he was 23, so he's young, but not that young.

I was really impressed with what I saw out of him. He got knocked a bit in LA for developing too slowly, but the forward position seems to agree with him. TN seems to like him - and being singled out by GMTM in the season ending presser doesn't hurt - so I think he'll play a much bigger role next season. And I'm looking forward to it.

  6. Regarding the question of when McKinney took over. (Sorry, posting from my phone & it isn't letting me quote posts.)

He was there at beginning of Teddy's 1st stint. Essentially his very 1st act as s&c coach was to tear up Smehlik's knee. He had him doing some sort of agility drill and Smelly tripped over a rope and tore up ligaments.

Pretty sure Teddy hired him originally, but not 100% positive.

I did some googling and came across the '07 Media Guide. It says McKenney was hired in July '95, so the timeline matches up. It also said he was Hartford's S&C coach for 6 years prior, so it's likely he came over from the Whalers with Teddy who was an assistant coach there for a year before Bflo hired him.

    Good memory Taro!

  7. I think the conditioning is on the players more than staff. This guy is more than capable of coming up with a more strenuous routine. He has been here over 20 years. That gives him at least one year warning to improve his program before dismissal.

Hi Chris, welcome to the board.

I don't disagree with what you're saying, and given Nolan's comments about the players' strength and conditioning, I guess we'll find out soon enough whether Ted places that on the players or on the regimen.

  8. Well, that didn't take long. Corsi, Teppo, Sacco, and Forton all off the list on Sabres.com.

I wonder who will be here next year?

TN has been down on the players' conditioning, so I gotta think McKenney & Allaire will go. Rip stays because he's the only one who knows where the turdburger yellow thread is.

I've read where players have said they got a lot out of working with Braid, the skating coach, but I'm not sure I noticed anything different on the ice. Maybe she's a goner? And a "Mental Skills" coach. That joke practically writes itself.

  9.

    <snip>

People, put up with the tank for 1 more season and sit back and watch this team grow into legitimate cup contenders

I'd be much more impressed with your crystal ball if you had posted the winning lottery numbers for this Friday and Saturday's drawings.

  10. Can we change the name of this thread to "The official thread of semantics"? They're going to suck but they're not going to try to suck. What exactly is the point? Does the "but hey, these guys are trying" point of view really make a bad season that much more palatable?

    Yes.

  11. I wouldn't call tanking a fan fabrication at all. It's setting your team up to fail with the goal of landing a draft pick.

Tanking may have been DR's plan, and it would look like GMTM continued it, but I don't think he did.

I think GMTM looked at what was going on and sold off as many assets as he could with the intention of tearing it down to rebuild it. In late June, I expect he'll trade some of those picks for quality guys that can improve the team in '14-'15.

As he said, he's not doing some long rebuild.

  12. We seem to be discounting not winning the lottery. The difference between 1 or 2 is huge - even though we will still most likely get the player we wanted anyhow.

Florida controls this draft. Don't think for a minute that GMTM did not want to be in this position.

I imagine he'd want to be #1, but don't think for a minute that with a 3 in 4 chance of not getting the first pick, he was surprised.
