Several updates on #Sabres/Leino post, including @capgeek saying it will be 6th-largest buyout in NHL history. http://blogs.buffalonews.com/sabres/2014/06/leino-put-on-waivers-as-first-step-to-compliance-buyout.html

The Sabres signed Leino to a six-year, $27 million deal on July 1, 2011 and it will cost them $7.333 million to get out of the final three years. The contract rates as one of the worst free agent deals in NHL history, and sits in the annals of Buffalo sports ignominy alongside the $49 million the Bills gave offensive lineman Derrick Dockery in 2007.
  2. Just think about some of the Sabres from the past that came back and got booed (that did not deserve it). When Leino makes it back for his first game as a visitor.....yikes. Worst signing in Buffalo Sports history......

I don't see him playing in N America next year. I think he will be back in Finland.

  3. I'm not upset it hasn't happened because I'm confidant that it will, but I really did think Ville would be one of the first compliance buyouts we'd hear about.

I mean, there really isn't much to mull over on this...

  4. Saw this video:

My favourite comment was "She's totally about to lose her NBA team."

My favourite line in the video was "How many drunk cops have I stripped for?"

One of the few times I can feel good about most people thinking it's gotta be in or around NYC because it's in New York.

The fact that that "lady" is a resident of a suburb of my hometown is embarrassing.

  5. What about the possibility that at least one of the five have been turned? We're not going to release these guys without thoroughly thinking it through. This thing doesn't go on for five years without our intelligence community being very well aware of a lot of things. As has been suggested several times early in the thread, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to see these guys involved in a drone strike somewhere down the line.

I think they have to live in Qatar under what amounts to a house arrest with surveillance, and I heard that any family who comes from Afghanistan to visit cannot leave Qatar.

That being the case, the amount of damage they could do to US interests has got to be pretty limited. And with a couple of US air bases and an army base in Qatar, I can't imagine any of the 5 could fart without the US intelligence apparatus knowing.

  6. Maybe I'm a little too picky, but for the most part, I want no part of any place where I have to raise my voice in order to be heard. There are obvious exceptions like sporting events, but I generally stick to that rule. If I'm looking for a place to have a drink, I'm a bit sick of the crowded and loud places. I'll gladly stick to the house or outdoor patio setting for drinks.

I don't mind having to speak a little louder but I'm not a big fan of seeing cover bands in bars. They're too loud and oftentimes aren't that good. But if it's din of a bar full of people, I'm okay with it.

One of the reasons I have a regular spot I go is that I've gotten to know all the bartenders pretty well - several of us have hung out away from the bar. And the advantage in that is that I absolutely HATE waiting for a drink. And when your friends are the bartenders, you don't have to.

  7. Well if you wait long enough that bumblebee will metamorphosis into a caterpillar Benjamin Button style.

I was thinking that maybe the best way to proceed with your issue would be to tell your lady that you think you are getting big and out of shape and then slowly introduce the idea of you both working out together, like running and stuff. Say you want to try eating healthier for some random reason too. Make it sound like you are the self conscious one, maybe that will work.

I actually mentioned that last night and she seemed receptive to helping me out.

And as an aside, I'd hate to have you guys think I'm a total pig. She was something of a bigger girl when we started dating but now her entire body composition and shape has changed...

    <snip>

Lol mine is a butterfly (2, actually) as well. And I have no illusions about it being awesome... it's just something I wanted to do, and I did and I don't regret it.

    <snip>

I should probably admit that I was exaggerating some in my original post.

I think a lot of the tats I see were bad ideas that actually happened* and I do lie to people in that white lie kind of way when they proudly show me their ink, but the truth is, I'm more of a live and let live guy. If a person likes their tat, that's all that matters because Lord knows he didn't get it to impress knuckleheads like me.

*True story: While hanging out and drinking beers and swimming with a few people I saw a dude with a tat on his lower back spells out his last name. His last name is "Tarbox." For his sake I hope he never ends up in jail.

  8. 1. I have a small tattoo on my lower back (sorry, Campy).

No need to apologize, I'm sure it's awesome. ;)

My girlfriend also has a "don't-call-it-a-tramp-stamp" tat of a butterfly. Of course, now it looks more like a bumblebee.

  9. I'd check out the sled hockey....they beat the tar out of each other...old time hockey.

Does downtown and the HC hotel in particular have the infrastructure to host a few hundred disabled athletes? I'm sure they make due, but it would be nice for them not be bussing all around town. What does a Marriott have...8 accessible rooms and 2 elevators?

Those with paralysis are a different story obviously, but I think most are amputees and have prosthetic legs.

  10. This could be dangerous...

    1. I regularly lie to people about their tatoos. I don't think they're awesome, cool, or sweet. In fact, I think 99.9% of them are stupid.

    2. If the Bills moved to TO, I'd still root for them but it would with an emotional detachment. If they go to any other city, I'd stop watching the NFL not as a protest, but because I just don't give an isht about the league.

    3. Not a day goes by that I don't regret telling my ex I didn't want to be married to her anymore.

    4. I get drunk more frequently now - as a 45 year old man - than I have in 20+ years. Might be related to number 4.

    5. My girlfriend has put on a lot of weight over the past year. It's not attractive and it can't be good for her health but I have absolutely no idea how to talk to her about it without sounding like a shallow and rude arsehole.

    6. Friends tell me I slide back into my Canadian accent when I drink. I'm 100% American.

If anybody has suggestions on #5, I'll listen...

  11. Can we all agree that, throughout his entire career, Miller has been a good to very good goaltender who can sometimes play lights out and, on occasion, gives up soft goals at what seem like the worst possible time?

For what it's worth, the conversation around Bflo's defense v the Blue's defense has merit. From what I saw watching the Blues after the trade, Bflo's d-zone posture is more aggressive with more attacking the puck and trying to eliminate passing lanes and allowing Miller to face the shooter.

As said upthread, the Blues emphasized shot blocking which, in a sense, required Miller to lean toward the open player. After years of coming out and challenging shooters, he had to stay back so he'd have a better chance of moving laterally to get square after the pass.

Regardless of whether it's Call of Duty or the NHL, if you are most comfortable in being aggressive in your style of play, dialing it back feels like you're not as engaged and are much more reactionary than you'd like to be. And that, in my humblest of opinions, is why he struggled down the stretch.

  12. If a GM of a contender was went from being willing to shell out big money for Miller to not giving him much at all based on .01% of his career, that GM isn't smart enough to win a Cup anyway. If you want to make an argument that said GM wouldn't pay big money based on Miller's career then fine, but basing that big of a decision on 6 playoff games is a fireable offense.

I'm not arguing with what you're saying, but I think the fans leaping off the Miller bandwagon after those first 8 games played a part, as did the conditional pick they'd have to give up.

  13. Not sure how to look at this?

Are you saying that by overpaying for grit, the acquiring team didn't have success and the Nords made the smart move?

Or are you saying that it is stupid to label guys as Generational Talents because often they don't live up to their expectations?

Wow man, you are way overthinking it...

I thought it was awesome the team he blew off won the Cup not long after being blown off. I thought it was even more awesome that Lindros left the game without ever winning it, and I really like that the Flyers haven't won it since.

And I also thought that pretty much every hockey fan who is not a Flyers fan felt the same way. Ya' know, all schaudenfreudey and stuff.
