I was in Florida around this time last year for a little vacation. I watched both the Panthers and Lightning games - both wins. One of them involved an OT goal by Lybushkin (?) - a goal that prompted Rob Ray to laugh in spite of himself (like a right jolly old elf).

    That was fun.

The highlight goal of last season. Strictly due to its improbability.

Just a few thoughts on this game: I'm not going to get carried away overinterpreting this win. But the major takeaway is the big difference between a team that gets good goaltending and a team that doesn't get it. LA's goalies were atrocious. Half of our goals should have been routine stops. We didn't overwhelm their goalies with barrage of shots. What we did is get our shots on net while their goalies whiffed on them. Greenway's goals should have been routine stops.

What I noticed on both ends of the ice is a greater effort to have net presence. And that net presence on both ends is what distinguishes this game from many of our games. The Okposo tip and even the Benson nifty twirling goal resulted in scores because they were around the net. On defense, we had plenty of coverage around our goalie that resulted in a quick clear when the puck was hovering around the net after a stop.

What's noticeable about UPL's recent stellar play is that he is not allowing many juicy rebounds. And what's also noticeable is that he is using his size to play big without much wasted motion. There is a calmness to his game brought on by his confidence. If we end up finding our #1 goalie in this disappointing season it will be a plus. (I still believe that eventually Levi is going to be our #1 goalie or at the minimum our rotational goalie.)

I thought our defensive unit played well. The more I see Ryan Johnson, the more I am impressed. Eric Johnson is a stabilizing player on the blue line. It would be foolish to deal him off at the trade deadline.

Greenway would have had a good game even if he wouldn't have scored. He's not flashy but he is a strong player on a team that needed such a physical presence.  The Greenway and Clifton additions were solid additions to this team. They weren't exciting additions but good additions that bulked up the roster. We need a couple more of those types of additions in the offseason.

It would be a big mistake not to re-sign Mitts. He's good, gritty and versatile.

This team needs to go on a winning streak even if it doesn't result in a playoff spot. The players have to believe that they can win so that the malaise of persistent failure doesn't contaminate their attitude towards being here. How many players wanted out because they got tired of losing and watching the playoffs on TV each year?

This was a good game with good effort all the way through. The next game should be a better measuring stick game.

He can have a role as a utility player who is brought up when needed. I agree with you that he played well in this game.

Not for nothing @JohnC but I find it interesting that in your observation about net front presence you (rightly) cite OK and Benson. The oldest and youngest players, respectively, on the Sabres roster. Now we need to find someone in between with the willingness to regularly go there.

Can you throw the GM in the box and mail it to North Pole?

    Santa Claus

North Pole (or anywhere "North of 60"

Just great. Rudolf, the leader, is old and slow. Dancer and Prancer are out with lower and upper body injuries, respectively. Donner and Blitzen have been replaced by calves who have never flown around the world. There will be no gifts this year - even though we were told there would be. Maybe in 2025. But starting in ‘26 they will definitely be delivered every year thereafter. Sustainable success.

How is it that we score maybe one lucky goal a season whereas at least 20+ go in on us?

We made Dallas look bad and yet we still lost because of their damn goalie. We should of ran the bastard, play dirty its not like the refs are going to cut you any slack. WTF was both those 5v3 penalties? Felt like the fix was in with that Clifton penalty especially; on the PK how many times have we seen Sabres take blatant crosschecks with no call. Benson got literally dumped twice in the 1sst in front of the net with the puck nowhere near him and they weren't "I'm stronger and taller" falls; they were crosscheck style falls.

This year has been a freaking test in anger management; the Sabres have bad games where you're angry and then you have games like these where they play great and yet lose anyway.

'Luck has the smell of perspiration'.

Would you trade Cozens and a protected first? If all the responses are quick yeses, we aren’t offering enough.

Most likely no. But this make me wonder - without looking it up - how far were the Sabres away from being able to draft Jiricek? And what would the cost have been then to move up vs. what we’re kicking around now?

Monken firmly believes in half time adjustments.

He’s really good. Gotten Jackson to another level. I’m a bit surprised he hasn’t gotten any interviews in this HC hiring cycle. He’s better than that guy from Detroit, who seems to be talked about a lot.

Son of a bitch, I have to work on Monday. I bought tickets, cold weather gear, food for tailgating and so on......

After all your thoughtful preparations for the game, I see a 24-hour flu bug in your future, starting at about 8AM Monday. Just be sure to cough a lot (for added effect) when you make the phone call in.

Imperfect though they are, the Bills are among the league’s hottest teams at the moment. You have Josh coming off a 425 total yards game.

And now it appears likely that the weather will turn this game into a randomized toss up. Sorta sucks.

Agree. I would have felt a lot more comfortable if the Bills could run their offence unhindered by the weather and TJ Watt out.

  9. Been meaning to post this for over a week now re: Strbak. This is from Tony Gasparini, GM of Strbak's USHL team. Notably, Gasparini was a longtime scout in the LA Kings organization. (From The Athletic).

“His biggest strength is competitiveness and willingness to engage himself in the game physically and defensively. He moves quite well,” Gasparini said. “And I do think there’s a secondary offensive element to his game because he does shoot it so well. He’s a very direct and assertive offensive player. He wants pucks to the net. But the primary of his game is going to be a shutdown, very hard and physical leader type defenseman with some secondary offence.”

@LGR4GM does this fit the description of what you hoped Muel to be?
