I watched him play here in Halifax and felt he would be a very good one.

Very nearly the last pick in 2013.  He will be Flames Captain, I think.  If the Sabres could somehow get him I would make him Captain.

I would too @Sabres Fan in NS. For a few reasons a trade to Buffalo wouldn't happen though. But we desperately need a guy like this.

I was watching the Flames/Yotes game last night. Never knew much about him other than he was a piece of that big trade. Then I saw him manhandle a guy out from the crease (and a pretty effective shove after the whistle). Later he was defending an oncoming rush high in his own zone. No retreat and stick swing defense like the Sabres play in that situation. Stepped up, took the body, and knocked the Yote on his ass. Can score too. Looked up his contract status and saw the linked article.

Up front is where I am most active.

Jost, Olofsson and Robinson need to be significantly upgraded and another centre has to be acquired to fill the hole created by Mitts.

I am looking to overhaul the identity of the bottom 6 and want to add two wingers who can bring the speed and hustle of Robinson, but with a degree more skill and a lot more meanness. I’d look hard at Dakota Joshua and Will Carrier: two guys who will punish on the forecheck and get to the net.

My biggest investment comes at centre. I am still banking on Cozens as a legit 2C, and don’t need to bring in an upgrade, but a guy who can fill that role like a Stephenson works. I’m also fine with a more natural 3C. Just get me a warrior who can win faceoffs and score more than Johan Larsson. I think we’re more likely to target this guy in a trade.

Girgs can play for my team if he wants to, but not at the expense of adding the above.

Agree with all of this. And it is what I find particularly frustrating. We need to, and have needed to, shore up the bottom 6 with players of the type that are absent in the organization at the present. Especially with CM gone. KA, with the assets / cap space available to him, can’t seem to upgrade the bottom 6? (Or doesn’t see the need to). It’s not like the Sabres are trying to find a 1C.

Prior to this year, Weber and Peca had zero experience coaching in the NHL and far less overall coaching experience than Wilford or Christie. I’m not defending our staff, but at this point they are quite a bit more experienced as NHL assistants than Peca or Weber (in other words, experience is not a supportive argument for having replaced anyone on our staff with Peca or Weber).

More broadly, I do agree the lack of NHL coaching experience on our staff has been an issue (though, our assistants now have over 12 years of NHL experience combined). The best supporting example is Jon Cooper’s start in Tampa. Prior to taking over, Cooper had zero NHL experience as either a player or coach. I’m not sure whose decision it was, but for his first 5 years as coach of the Lightning he had Rick Bowness as an assistant.

It should also be noted that the staff now has over 12 years of unsuccessful NHL coaching experience. How much more do we need to see?

A Peca would be (would have been) a good add if joined by a couple seasoned and capable assistant coaches.

Didn’t realize that about Cooper. Must be an outlier, no?

The D metrics are improved but enough to cover for the decrease in offense.  https://naturalstattrick.com/teamtable.php

The Sabres have allowed the 7th most HDCA, last season they were 4th worst.  The totals are better 881 last season vs 759 YTD, but the entire NHL is better in this category. This is about an 11.7% improvement year over year.  Last season the Ducks were the worst at 1055 HDCA and 15 teams allowed 800 or more HDCA.  This season SJ is the worst at 862 and only 4 teams so afar have given up 800.  Scoring chances against are also improved from 11th worst to 14th worst and overall the numbers are also improved somewhat from SCA of 1957 down to 1773 YTD.  That amounts to about a 7% improvement year over year.

Sadly those improvements aren't helping the team as the offense has fallen even more.  HDCF are down 12.5% year over year and SCF is down 11.9%

If they keep Granato, he needs to replace his entire staff except Bales.  The improvement in UPL, especially given the limited improvement of the D, is a testament to Bales coaching and UPL's work ethic.

I think replacing his entire staff (other than Bales, as you say) should be a condition of Granato’s employment.

Thanks. Looks like I can link an individual  post but not the thread.

  6. Last night I went back to a topic from January 2020 discussing the merits of trading Rasmus Dahlin - then in his second season. As I expected there were very fascinating parallels to the Owen Power discussions. Worth a look if you have some time to kill. And my apologies if there is a way to insert a link directly to it - I just don’t know how to do it.

What’s also crazy are the comments about deficiencies in roster construction that still exist four years later.

By the way, anyone who thinks that the fight at the end of the game was not staged, does not know this team at all. That was so scripted it was pathetic. Hey, let’s leave these fans one lasting image of a team that we do not represent in a slightest.

It was an interesting combination of Sabres on the ice at the time. Dahlin with Cliffy? Tage and Greenway plus whoever the 5th skater was? Maybe a bit premeditated on someone's part? May just have been the usual 6 on 5 defense.

Had to laugh about OV just milling around by himself 10 or 12 feet from the scrums. No interest in being involved. I suppose with the numbers he had no dance partner, though.

Did I just talk myself out of a good conspiracy theory?

  8. We had a mostly clear afternoon here in Western MA. Enjoyed having the kids over to join my wife and I for the event. A couple things really jumped out at me. With only a very tiny sliver of the sun exposed at the peak (7:30 to 10:30 as a clock face) the sky got grayish in color but there were still shadows. And the temperature dropped noticeably. The sun is an awful long way away but puts into perspective how bright it is and just how much heat that sucker generates.

BTW, any else listen to Pink Floyd’s DSOTM while all this was happening?

  9. Honestly I’ve been conflicted for a while about the possibility of the Sabres making the playoffs. On one hand it would be important for the players and coaching staff to experience playoff hockey for their continued growth. On the other hand, after watching playoff hockey for the last few years, the Sabres as presently constructed would get physically abused. It would be really hard to see.

If that is the plan then interview Ruff, Gallant, Berube and at least one highly regarded up and coming guy.   Make this the job coaches want.

Have real criteria in place BEFORE the interviews start.

Evaluate based on the criteria , then pick a coach.  Support the coach and give him freedom to go his way, and take his inputs into the roster.

In other words, run a professional organization.

I completely agree with you Punch. But I feel like any competent, demanding coach will want to turn over a chunk of this roster. And we now know that isn’t in KA’s plan. So the interviews will end quickly. Thus I think your process would need to be under the oversight of a new GM.

I don't mind McDermott as coach, I guess I kinda like him. I'm not married to the idea of him being here forever, but I never really was ever on the train of firing him, or even thinking about it.  With that said, he is a little strange with the media.  At times its like he is trying to be like Bellichick with giving nothing to the media, but he does it his own way trying at time to be SLIGHLTLY more friendly, but its just, I don't know, it comes across as really strange.

Back onto Diggs, after listening, reading others opinions, and thinking of the trade, I'm really really good with it.  I've posted many times that I want this team to get younger.  Before LAST year I thought the Diggs extension was a mistake, and yes, I did post that I didn't want Vonn Miller at all even when he first arrived, and I think last year was the year to move on from Poyer and Hyde, not this year.  I prefer a younger/more athletic time. I know, sometimes you need veterans, and if I had my way the football or hockey team I put together would always be a bit too young, but that is what I like.   I never liked guys that much who "made their name" with other teams and then were aquired. Yes, your franchise gets attention for that, but for me its just more fun bringing in relative 'unknowns' and having them make their name WITH you....and then I prefer getting rid of players a year too early rather than a year too late.

Plus Diggs, I was never a fan of his social media presense.  Yeah, I know we can ignore it if we want, but just something about me, I prefer guys/players/stars who stay off of Social media (kinda like Josh Allen) rather than guys who 'build their brand' on it, and always need to have some interaction on it. Just me.  To be totally honest, he was a Buffalo Bill but I really didn't like him.

I'm going to look forward to watching a younger (if not as good for a year) team play football this year in the Bills. I"m going to look forward to seeing what moves they make in the offseason.  Next to winning the Superbowl, the Bills are now in position that makes me the MOST interested I can possibly be in them....The team building/team construction aspect is the most fun thing for me as a fan, certainly a lot more fun than just 'running the vets' back out there year after year.

Good stuff. I just think the Miller signing, keeping the safeties, etc., was the Bills 'all in' approach to a championship. And honestly, if the defense had been even relatively healthy last season, the Bills might have won it all. But it didn't happen. So the reset - absolutely not a full rebuild - has begun. And I expect the Bills will be criminally underrated going into next season, which is fine by me.

  12. One last thought (until the next one 😃). There's been speculation about BB moving up a bit to take a WR he likes. I think one of two things will happen. He stays where he is, or even moves down a bit, because there's a guy he knows he can get that they really like. Or he goes big game hunting and moves way up to get a guy they absolutely love. Assuming three QB's go really high as expected I won't be surprised if BB calls his buddy in East Rutherford about pick #6. I just think if he moves up, it won't be a small move up.

  13. What I find it curious by their absence is any commentary from McDermott or Brady on this matter. I believe they were integral in this whole thing. Diggs wanted out and McD didn't want him on the team any longer IMPO). I can't shake the image from a couple seasons ago of Brady and Josh on the bench during a game looking at the pad together deciphering what the opponent's defense was doing. And Diggs is standing over them flapping his gums at them. Brady must have been thinking, or saying, 'Dude, STFU and go sit down. We're working here.' Brady was the QB coach then. He's the OC now.

The org made a value judgement. And as @That Aud Smell points out that's a hell of a wallop they just took. Hence we now know what the team's value, in totality, on Diggs was.
