Considering that almost every 3rd and long going back to forever McNugget and company drop into a deep zone, it isn't much of a surprise that things open up underneath. They are absolutely TERRIFIED of being beat over the top ever so they content themselves with getting beat consistently underneath, just like 13 seconds and just like most 3rd and longs this year.

And when the Bills seemingly have gotten themselves off the field on 3rd and long there will be a flag half the time ..... five yards for something, automatic first down.

This is a very fair question.  It may depend on how DG plans to deploy the 4th line. Is it going to be a traditional physical checking line or just another speedy scoring line.

With Z, KO, VO and Jost all UFAs after this season (Mitts & Krebs are RFAs), KA will have a great deal of leeway to decide how many of these kids really get a shot next year.  That could easily work in Krebs' favor.

8 of the top 9 for next year are probably written in stone (TNT, Skinner, Tuch, Quinn, Cozens, JJP, Mitts and Greenway).  That doesn't leave much room for more than one of the top 4 kids (Savoie, Benson, Kulich and Rosen) or Krebs.

This is really the overarching question, isn't it? It will provide clarity to this discussion. If its a scoring line then there's lots of room for the kids along with some issues already mentioned. If its a defensive/checking line, then there won't be many roster spots available for the prospects ill-suited for that role. And I'm getting an AHL.TV subscription because ROC may have one of the all-time great AHL teams with all those high end prospects.

  3. I'm not ready to throw in the towel on Krebs yet. Doesn't his career arc match up up CM's - who at this point most were ready to trade for a bag of pucks? To be clear, I'm not suggesting Krebs has Casey's upside. But Krebs upside may be that of a high-end 4C - which may be the only spot for him if TT, DC and CM remain as the top 3 center spine. If one of the prospects supplants him in the near future then the prospects are developing nicely.

Thanks, Ray and Dan were blabbering on as usual.  I am getting tired of them already.   No more RJ at the end of his career to salvage this broadcast team.

Minutes of play by play get ignored every game while they pontificate.  Keys plays and nuances never get talked about.  Ray tries to analyze what is happening but lacks the depth to do it correctly.  Dan would be better if he stuck to play by play only, and made it a priority.  Dan needs to get more excited for the Sabres than for the opponent too.

That's very surprising to hear. Wasn't Ray one of the more cerebral players to ever play in the NHL?

Nice W by Chicago tonight.  Perry, Hall and Bedard pp1 is weird.

Chicago looked really solid last night. Nothing like a team in position for #1 OA just a year ago.

Crazy end to the game too. Chi up 3-1 under 2mins left. TOR pulls goalie. Chi EN goal 4-1. Overturned. CHI 3-1. TOR scores under a minute left. 3-2. Goal overturned. 3-1 CHI. CHI w/EN 4-1 final.

Both those observations sum up pretty well what is the NHL.

    This ⬆️ seems prescient.

    What exactly are those gymnastics?

Odd roster rules. Teams can elevate two practice squad players without waiving anyone, effectively increasing the roster from 55 to 57 players and increasing the gameday active roster, also by two.

Reply got attached to the tweet. Sorry.

Like the Bills Jets game, sometimes what you see isn't really what team is. All teams play bad games and have bad stretches, I'll worry when it isn't preseason and they don't have a week to fix it.

That said, defensively the Sabres don't look sharp. I'd be practicing that all week and nothing else.

After that first Bills game I wasn’t concerned that it was a reflection of what the Bills were, but rather they lost a winnable game that may have playoff implications at season’s end.

I’m feeling a bit of the same now. If it takes the Sabres 8 or 10 games to get their defensive play in order there will likely be some points lost with playoff implications because they weren’t ready out of the gate. Thus, I share @LGR4GM’s hope the Sabres have a VERY productive week of practice.

You waive the player that is last on the depth chart in a position that is not in a critical state - especially if there are people on the PS in that position that are capable.  I don't know enough about every player to name who that is, I just think that Jonathan would get picked up because he is an edge rusher with upside.

Correct and correct. But as an alternative I suspect there will be some 'gymnastics' with the practice squad rules tomorrow afternoon - especially because they are allowed to travel with the team for overseas games. Or they just waive Josh and hope he clears.

    Exhibit A: The L.A. Kings

for years we were told how great their prospect pool was. They really have not developed any of them into impact players. Some have been moved along some are just there languishing.

History shows if you can move a couple of them for the right impact piece then you make the move. It’s the franchises that identify the right impact piece that are successful.

You touch on an interesting point - the role of the organization. In other words, if all 32 teams had the same prospect pool (hypothetically) would some have a better success rate, per Taro’s definition, than others? More importantly are the Sabres in a position as an organization to do better than the 50% figure?

He could be, but don't forget... Point spent 2 seasons in junior after he was drafted.    Last thing you want to do is ruin his confidence or force him to play a different style because he's not strong enough on the puck.

Looking at this from the standpoint of the 9 game stint: Is there a tradeoff here? Is there enough value in Benson experiencing regular season action and seeing what it takes to be an effective NHL'er (and enhancing his development through self-evaluation)? Because you are totally right - this kid is too promising to risk doing damage by rushing him up. Its so unfortunate for him the AHL is not an option.

  11. I've had the opportunity to see some All-22 video analysis of the Bill's D (Cover-1 does a great job, btw). You see so much that's going on outside the view of the regular broadcast. What is striking is how complex the Bills D scheme is and more so just how much pre-snap communication is taking pace in the back seven. For that reason I have to believe the Bills will not bring anyone in from the outside without a great deal of familiarity with the calls. They'll pull guys up from the practice squad first. Anyone brought in from the outside will be for practice squad replacement with the hope they can get up to speed in 6 or 7 weeks if needed.

Liking that they're using TC & the exhibition games to get the best look possible at the kids looking to step up.

Interesting that they're likely giving Olofsson a shot with Cozens.  Not a combination that has been used much at all in the past.  Benson's play should have lit a fire under his butt, so hopefully he's fully engaged tonight.

Totally agree on VO. We'll see what kind of competitive juice (and pride?) he has this evening.

Sam Darnold definitely went negative in his infamous "seeing ghosts" game in 2019.

Had no recollection so I looked it up. Great call @Taro T. Holy sh*t that was awful. 11/32 for 86 yards, 0TD/4INT, passer rating of 3.6. If he wasn't negative that day then something's broken.

  14. This game should be fun. The proverbial irresistible force vs. immoveable object matchup based on this past weekend. The Phins put up 70 and the Bills D dominated the WFT. In fact, since the advent of fantasy football (or at least since its been shoved in our faces with regularity) I have never seen a QB play an entire game and have ZERO fantasy points. Howell surely has PTSD after Sunday.
