  1. Sam just signed his first 1 year contract. His previous contract was a 2 year bridge.
  2. Yeah, it doesn’t make much sense this offseason. If I recall correctly, it starts to look like a plausible idea next offseason.
  3. I’m kind of going to disagree here. PK/PP is often a very structured scenario where both teams are trying to create/prevent openings in very specific areas. I think that on the PK a goalie may actually be MORE dependent upon their teammates to execute than at ES. A failure to execute/mistake by the PK team results in a prime scoring chance a very high percentage of the time, probably more often than a similar mistake would at ES. In general, I think that the level of coordination between goalie and defense is greater than we often realize. I think they are just about always trying to funnel shots to certain areas, prevent certain types of chances, and play scenarios certain ways in order to play into a goalie’s strengths and protect their weaknesses. Just what I’m thinking.
  4. I think seeing through traffic is a skill, one that’s used both at ES and on the PK, but probably more on the PK. Thats a hypothetical example of what I mean when I ask what specifically about Ullmark’s play makes him bad on the PK. Just saying that he is bad at PK because his SV% is low there is not very convincing to me.
  5. I’m jumping back in late. I would have taken Rossi, then Lundell at 8. Still would probably, but the reasons cited by management for taking Quinn absolutely make sense to me. I learned a lot about him after the pick. A lot of things that I like. I can’t say the same about Nylander or Mitts, for example. Its not enough that I know am saying that Quinn was the right pick, but it’s enough that I’m keeping an open mind. We’ll see how it goes.
  6. The bolded is much different from what you originally said. You said that you don’t think the “ideal notion” of spreading the scoring talent over 3 lines even “exists in reality”, and also that it was “inevitable” that two lines would be far ahead of the others in ice time. Those are pretty absolute stances that really have no supporting evidence. If you are walking it back to the bolded, then I agree. 😉
  7. I guess my question is, what is he actually bad at? Penalty killing specifically is not a goalie skill. It’s still stopping the puck. I would need to define what exactly about his play is leading to a low PK save %. Or if it’s even his play, or if its team PK. Do you, or anyone else, know where to find goalie save % broken up by shot quality? Or save % on high danger chances?
  8. Where are you finding your PK save % stats? Also, I just want to add that not all high danger chances are created equal. If the team was giving up lots of ultra high danger chances, that would be a major factor.
  9. Montour won’t be expansion draft eligible because he will no longer be a Buffalo Sabre at the time of the expansion draft. He will be an unrestricted free agent. That’s no reason to prioritize keeping him.
  10. This hasn’t actually been the case though. Last season the top line (Olofsson-Ike-Sam) got the most minutes by a wide margin, then the other 3 lines were extremely close in ice time, often fluctuating a lot from game to game. And it’s not unusual for the 2nd/3rd lines of NHL teams to be very close in ice time. With more talent, will Krueger try to stack the talent on 2 lines and follow suit with the ice time? Will he try to spread the talent out and spread the ice time as well? I don’t know and I’m not sure how you could know. It’s kind of uncharted territory.
  11. Big fat Nope.
  12. I don’t think he is too bad defensively, probably a little below average. The thing is that while Olofsson has an elite shot, it is literally his only above average skill. The shot allows him to play on a top 6 scoring line with players who can maximize him, but even then he isn’t especially good at ES, and if he is anything more than your 5th or 6th best forward, your team probably isn’t good. On the PP though he is very valuable because that shot is something the other team needs to constantly guard against at the risk of an automatic goal against. The PP goals matter, but must be looked at separately from his ES play.
  13. Yeah, I’m not excited for Irwin to be playing regularly as 3LD, but he is a nice option as 7th or 8th D as a guy who can play either side.
  14. He is listed as a RD on cap friendly. It could be as simple as that.
  15. Bingo. Even if he has played a lot of RD, he is going to play LD in Buffalo.
  16. Does Okposo get a choice in whether he is protected or not? I didn’t think so. He doesn’t have a NMC so I believe he can be left unprotected. No?
  17. This is how I feel about Girgensons. Risto just doesn’t give me the same feeling. Maybe because it seems like 3 years in a row there have been reports or half hearted trade requests. And also I don’t think he is a smart player. I just don’t feel connected to him.
  18. They were discussing Cozens, not Thompson. For the record though, I think Tage weighs even more than that now. More like 225 by some accounts.
  19. Totally fair. I guess that’s part of having to live with his past actions. I guess my question is, where does it end? If, IF, he seems to have learned and grown from the experience, and is now a better, more self aware human being, when is it ok for him to go on? From the article is sounds like the victims parents would like this guy banned from the NHL for what he did in 7th and 8th grade. I understand that they are hurt, but that doesn’t sit right with me. Maybe he knew it was wrong but did it anyway. Maybe he wanted the approval of his peers. Maybe he was insecure. Maybe he was self absorbed. There are emotional and social reasons that people behave this way. That doesn’t make it right, but it means that people can experience personal growth. I’m just not ready to write off 13-14 year old children for life because they ***** up bad. I ask again, where does it end? If he can’t be in the NHL, what should and shouldn’t he be allowed to do with his life?
  20. It sounds like the way that he behaved as a child/early teen was truly horrible. He deserved to be held accountable for those actions, made to understand why it is unacceptable, and made to explore why he felt the need to do those things. As a result of his actions, that 14 year old was taken to juvenile court, plead guilty, and was sentenced to provide recompense to society. We (as a society, as a world) need to allow for children to learn, grow, and become their best selves. We can not “cancel” a child and sentence them to a lifetime of unfulfilled potential. This young man will always have to live with the memory and reputation of what he has done, but we need to let him go on and continue to live.
  21. He gets the puck out of the defensive zone, with control. If the puck isn’t in the defensive zone, the other team can’t score. That’s how he keeps the puck out of the net. Now, if you are looking for a guy who can stand near the net on the PK and clear the crease, Montour may not be your guy, but at ES I think his defense is pretty good.
  22. That is funny. Fansided is just clickbait nothingness. This mock draft clearly makes absolutely no sense.
  23. The Skinner trade was not in Botterill’s first offseason.
  24. JB brought in Pominville, Pouliot, and Griffith as opposed to Hall, Staal, and Eakin. So, you know, almost the same thing.
  25. Nice! I was thinking that the goalies had an NHL games played threshold requirement. I see that’s not the case though. That’s good news. Thanks Seems like maybe little Kevy knows what he is doing out there. They just grow up so fast.
