I’m not a fancy stats guy but this does not bode well for VO. I have had him and Bryson as the fall guys for many of the team’s issues for a few years now. He brought down Mitts last year and now he’s doing it to Cozens. I rely on my eyes that the guy doesn’t win any battles or seem to want to battle. Battling includes working hard with or without the puck. DG says he values “compete level” very highly. DG benched him for a reason last year when the games mattered most and I suspect that his eye test was backed up by the in house analytics staff. I wish Quinn was around, this problem would be easier to solve. I am willing to give anyone a shot on Cozens’ wing to see if the situation improves.

I’m disappointed with the Sabres start but it’s not over yet. It’s not fun but I’m not jumping overboard yet. Cup finalist Florida is 0-2. Conference finalist and favourite of many Edmonton is also 0-2. There is time to get on track.

I broke my arm the day after breaking a mirror, I thought that was weird. If I change seats at home and the Sabres score, I remain in that seat. Didn’t work last night.

I’m disappointed by the effort. The Rangers got a few early breaks and capitalized on them. They played like a wet blanket for the second half of the game, blocking shots like it was game 7 of the conference final. They got a lead and then defended it, pure and simple. They were prepared and it showed. Positives: Greenway, Krebs, Benson, Clifton, Peterka Negatives: Power, Okposo, Thompson, Granato.

Treating this like a playoff game.

JJP draws one, he and Greenway are playing well.

I thought KO was looking slow. I think the Rangers 1-3-1 is slowing the game down.

I think Cooley is an under the radar player because he’s playing in AZ. He should get tons of ice time and PP opportunities.

I’m not a big country guy but I love that song and it’s perfect for him.

Let’s get the season going the right way, a win against an eastern opponent ranked above the Sabres. Levi handled these guys last year, he relishes the matchup with Igor. Benson with an assist, Dahlin with a pair.

I’m worried he won’t pull the trigger for a good 4/5 Dman because it would mean Bryson going to Rochester. Seriously, he can’t fall in love with his players, just because they want to be in Buffalo or are popular with teammates.

I think he is smart to take this money. The chances of Power getting lots of points is lower with Dahlin around than if he was top banana on another team. Dahlin will get more PP minutes and the higher talent level of PP1. Power’s ceiling is high and I think he will be good value in a few years. Seth Jones and Darnell Nurse make more and have already peaked. Power will be better than those guys in a year or two. He has bought into this team and now he needs to work to improve his game and become the Dman that can shut you down and transition the puck into an offensive opportunity. KA now has more cost certainty for the long term and can build around this core. If half of the top prospects become NHLers, there is money available. The cap has to take a jump soon, and KA still has some dry powder.

I wonder if they’re pushing for the Shane Wright exemption? Wright is 4 days younger than Savoie, who missed the birthday AHL cutoff by one day. Advantage Savoie Savoie played 22 WHL games vs 58 for Wright in the OHL in 19/20. Advantage Wright Wright got credited for an OHL season in the Covid year 20/21 even though the OHL did not play. Savoie played 34 games in the USHL. The WHL had a “developmental” season of 24 games. Advantage Savoie for playing but the CHL might be upset he jumped to another league. Draw. Savoie played 65 WHL games, Wright 63 OHL games in 21/22. Draw. Savoie played 62 WHL games, Wright 20 OHL games in 22/23. Wright bounced around from NHL to AHL to WJHC but he still was short by a few games to hit the CHL season threshold. Advantage Savoie.
