  1. Simple. Bonds. A long-term bond ETF will pay you 3%. This yield is depressed right now because bonds have gone on a run because people think the world is about to end, so if you are patient, one can get 4% or more. Plus, you reinvest the dividends until you need them and compounding interest will make some very wealthy if they have $5M to spare. The risk is very low considering shareholders get wiped out in a bankruptcy, but the company still have to pay their debt.
  2. I fail to see the reason why Faulk would change his NTC. If he was ambivalent about going there, he wouldn’t have included them on his no trade list. He doesn’t want to go there. Where’s the leverage to convince him otherwise?
  3. If JB is going to dump Risto for a bunch of spare parts, right now would be a great time. I don’t think many in Buffalo would notice.
  4. I could see this as the most likely scenario. Otherwise, Anaheim wouldn’t be trying to dump a player they’re could otherwise LTIR themselves.
  5. Yep. I would rather them match it then them getting 4 1st rounders. Those 3 guys are great, but they don’t make a team and TOR would be handcuffed for a while.
  6. This is good news, but I’m not excited about Toronto getting 4 1st round picks.
  7. Well, you can tell him what’s going to happen once the season starts. This is probably the fairest thing for both sides, so Sabotka can start making plans now. Then why wait around and just make the jump now?
  8. This thread is a showcase of human condition. A topic that has already been beaten to death and people are still jumping on the grave.
  9. I agree with Montour. But whether we get the Miller of last year vs 2-3 years ago remains to be seen.
  10. What moves? Are you referring to trading for a defensemen who was demoted to a 5/6 pairing or a defensemen who spent the later half of last season in the AHL? If we were looking to replace a 5/6 guy, I would agree. But we’re trying to replace a defensemen who ate up the most minutes (for better or worse) last year. Plus, we have 2 defensemen who will be starting on IR at the start of the season.
  11. I want quality over quantity. Roslovic wasn’t any better than Mitts last year and I’m not familiar with Perrault. Actually, I now am. If we’re going to acquire a LW, make sure he’s an excellent one. Ehlers is and Perrault is not.
  12. “Hey Jason, someone unplugged the fax machine”
  13. I don’t judge a player based on how much his former coach liked him. If he loved him so much, he would’ve traded for him. I’m sure Florida has a Nylander equivalent. I also think great players catch on no matter their coach. That is, if a player is good, they are good. Maybe this is a bad comparison, but the younger Rhino stayed on no matter how many coaches he had. He continued to improve. Its not not that I think he’s a poor prospect or will never be a top-4 defender. It’s just that I won’t be surprised if he starts the season on the Amerks to give him more playing time. I also don’t think he’s a reason we can go out and trade Risto now, nor do I think Miller is (another player who was demoted to the 5/6 pairing by a very good coach).
  14. I think it’s best to temper expectations. The guy was demoted last year to the AHL, but somehow we’ve suddenly made him into a top-4 defensemen.
  15. I think we’ll see improvement in GT via our added D and our GT new coach, who supposedly did a great job in Carolina last year. Not worried.
  16. I admit I’m only looking at stats, because I’m not too familiar with Roslovic, but how is he any better than Mitts? They had equal points last years and I expect Mitts to have improved.
  17. ...And why they can’t do pull-ups. This dude needs to eat some spinach.
  18. I think there’s a lot to be said for “growing up”. I think the mental game is something a lot of very young players struggle with. They come from teams where they have been the best player on the team, and now in the NHL, they are amongst the worst. Some, like Eichel and Dahlin, can lean on their talent, but most cannot. A lot may say “well, I’m just a rookie”. They need to realize that the NHL is the end of the line. There’s no more drafts or better teams to make. They need to grow up and realize this is their profession and they shouldn’t be doing anything besides working to be their best.
  19. That truly is miraculous. Sabres should sign him. Hope Seattle doesn’t get him.
  20. At this point, I’m becoming less and less interested in shipping out the said snarly defenseman. We need snarl, can’t be subtracting it. We have collected enough decent defensemen to allow Risto to be more sheltered and thrive. Our D being good won’t depend on him. This alone will lift our play. We have also acquired some middle-6 talent to bolster our offense. On paper, I think we are a much better team than last year, plus we have Krueger. Having Risto on our team right now is far from a problem and I would trade him unless a king’s ransom was paid.
  21. And that’s where the problem lies. Offer sheets should absolutely be used as a weapon to weaken conference opponents. They are used in this manner in the NFL regularly. It’s you beat your divisional foes, or you are out on the street. I know the word “collusion” was used and maybe this is too strong of an accusation. But I can see circumstances where neglecting to offer sheet players keeps spending down. Belichick has tried to sign RFA on the Bills numerous times. You do whatever it takes to win. Making a rival weaker makes your team stronger. Jbot is too busy rubbing elbows with his opponents to see he’ll be done next year if they don’t win.
  22. The “...but matchable” part was intended to say that they will match. Whether they load of another player to the Sabres or to another team, it doesn’t matter. A player will be moved and could have a domino effect. The intent of the offer sheet is to produce a significant amount of cap pressure. It’s us dictating contract terms on to another GM. And it they don’t match, then we get a player for a cheaper price.
  23. I would offer sheet them for a high, but matchable price. This could then pressure them into having to move someone else, perhaps for Risto.
  24. This is correct. If I was Cirelli, I’d be worried. Despite his skill, he’s never going to crack the top 6 in Tampa. Those people are either cemented by NMCs or by their contracts. Unless something drastic happens, he’ll be a 3rd liner for the foreseeable future in Tampa. That doesn’t translate to getting that big contract he’ll want.
