Smart drafting implies creating the best chance that your selections make it to the show. The best way to do that is to draft near the top. Check. Traded for top line scoring punch and physicality on d. Check. Bring in a good coach to get the best production not effort out of players acquired. Check. He does have shifty eyes. Ill give you that.

Would you let the coach choose Marner over say Eichel? Two different types of players. My point is that if the GM has an eye for talent and can give the coach a stable of horses, it is up to the coach to figure out how to use them most effectively. It could be scheme, combinations, teaching whatever, that is what great coaches do imho

I am on the other side. I think coaches are too focused the day to day to be the primary decision maker. In a situation, for example the Myers trade, where it really impacts the chemistry of the team then yeah I want to know what the coach thinks. But that might not be applicable this year when the tear down was coming to an end. Going forward I think it applies.
