Advanced Stats Say Goaltending the Issue, Not Defense
matter2003 replied to JoeSchmoe's topic in The Aud Club
Samuelsson has been a massive loss...he was the most dependable Dman in our own zone and him being out has had a trickle down effect on the others. -
I believe the Sabres are lucky to be on the road this week after tonight to avoid Snovember Part II setting up from Thursday-Monday

What is this team is missing to compete consistently?

More experience. There are going to be ups and downs and growing pains for the youngest team in the NHL. Lessons to learn, mistakes to make, and things to figure out. That is probably half of it. Comrie has been a little disappointing based on what he did last year with a not great Winnipeg D in front of him that allowed similar types of chances as the Sabres do. Maybe a few less breakaways tho...except he stops most of those. Need to be better at not turning pucks over in the O Zone trying to be creative but get a little too careless and turn pucks over for odd man rushes back the other way against. Samuelsson has been a major loss. He is by far their best traditional D man. Joker to a lesser degree, mainly because of who they have had to put in his place. It's not time for that yet. Maybe next year we can discuss that. Right now it's make incremental improvements to get you close to the playoffs...I have said from the beginning this is likely an 87-90 point team this year. -
I'm honestly more concerned with the forwards turning the puck over in the offensive zone leading to breakaways and odd man rushes the other way. They have become WAY too careless there. It's one thing to try and be creative, another to do so carelessly without any rules in place. 6 goals against the last 2 games off of Sabre deflections certainly hasn't helped either.

Possibly because he gets hurt and is out 6-8 weeks or more every year? Samuelsson has been a massive loss. He is by far their best defensive defenseman.
-
He is turning into a superstar. I don't think there is any denying it at this point. Basically the Sabre version of Josh Allen.
-
One thing I will say...Thompson is a freaking star
-
Comrie has made some good saves but allows too many "meh" goals and is not good at making big saves when the team needs them to either keep the lead or prevent a team from taking or extending the lead. His 3.62 and .885 save percentage have to be among the worst in the NHL. I'm thinking he needs to take a breather and let Anderson play more. Maybe sitting and observing will help him.

Going to have to figure out how to stop with these dumb turnovers leading to odd man rushes. Is one thing to be offensively minded, it's another thing to be careless in the offensive zone leading to odd man rushes in transition.
-
Just aren't good enough yet to play competitively with good teams missing starting defenders
-
Can we get a damn save from Comrie when it matters??
-
Pretty clear how important Samuelsson is to this team...he is the only one who plays a solid stay at home D game that can neutralize some of these chances other teams keep getting
-
How many times are we going to get goals off Sabre players?? Is that 6 in the last 2 games?? This is getting ridiculous
-
He is an entitled punk. Always has been, always will be.

You got that backwards. Nobody wants an entitled punk as their leader.
