There is no best BBQ in WNY.

Those aren't south enough. The only good BBQ in the country is south of Dallas/Ft. Worth.

Patently false, I'd put BBQ in KC up against anyone and they'd win more often than not in a blind taste test I would bet.

But it has to start somewhere and there has to be a coaching commitment to it. It has to be. We should have been doing it since Granato got hired, but "offense first" was the mantra. Once a season starts it's too late.

We did it backwards plain and simple.

Seemed to work pretty well last night...

I like Granato. I just pray Adams didn’t leave him with merely a cowbell

Simultaneously a good excuse for Granato, and following my point on chain of command: no excuse at all for Kevyn Adams

    More cowbell!

So there's a guy from outside the organization coming in and saying what some of us have been saying all off season so the question is why has the coaching staff not made that their priority in training camp? Ultimately this falls on the coach.

Training camp isn't even close to enough time to have something like that take hold...needs to be game in game out for half a season or more before it is really going to become second nature to players.  Players are not robots.

  5. after eating BBQ in KC I don't even bother with anyplace in WNY. Q39 was the best BBQ I have ever had and most people said that isn't even in their top 5 in KC.

Have had Fat Bob's a few times and one other one at one of the festivals and it wasn't anything special.  Personally, I think the smoking I used to do 10-12 years ago was probably better than anything I've had here.

Von Miller seems pretty impressed with it tho and he is from Texas, so maybe that says something.

On the road they are more relaxed and more filled with team spirit too.

The will be no home game sellouts until this teams' play is consistent enough to draw them in.  I NEVER thought I would see such poor home attendance in Buffalo - and they (the Sabres)  deserve it too.   I will refrain from ranting on Pegula, but I hold him accountable for the lack of interest in hockey in what was once a hockey hotbed.

The home record is puzzling and it makes me angry.

The Flames were in Buffalo on Tuesday for a Thursday game, they wanted to start their road trip off with the win, they have harder games ahead.
We should have played a backup, elevated our game for him, and been ready win at home.

I don't think it's a lack of interest.  I've watched them all thru the drought years and watch other games regularly even if they are non-Sabre related.  What I won't do is pay a bunch of money for a crap product or a team that doesn't play like they want to win at home. So i will continue watching on TV until they can show me there is a much higher chance of seeing a good game from them rather than a game like the Rangers game opening night.

They need to make the home games an advantage. Are they trying to put on too much of a show for the home crowd since they seem to play smarter and more that way on the road (dump and chase).

Seems like they should have this down by now in both practice and execution.

Islanders Sat and they deftly play the defense first style. Let's hope they figure this out quickly or they will be playing to sparse home team crowds.

They had the 5th worst home record in the NHL last year. The only 4 teams worse?  The bottom 4 teams in the NHL, ALL 30+ points below them in the standings(ANA, CHI, CLB, SJS). Inexcusable.  We wonder why they missed the playoffs...that's the reason right there. Because they were abysmal at home where most teams are actually really good. One of the best road teams, dreadful at home. Makes no sense.

Calgary scored two, maybe 3 goad because we f’d around with the puck in our own zone. Tuch had a simple play at the line, didn’t get it out. Same sequence Thompson make a crappy pass and then shortly afterwards it’s in the net. One example.

Those are the types of goals they can’t give up. The game was there for the taking and we didn’t take it.

Levi made some huge saves but let in others he shouldn’t have. The reviewed play was in too and that was a bad sign.

He also stopped 3 breakaways that UPL would have let in 3 goals on, so it all balances out.  Levi wasn't at his best last night, but he will improve and even last nights rebounds stick to him like velcro. UPL hasn't shown any indication of that and he had the worst rebound control in the NHL.

I think the part where EJ mentions taking what’s there is why they aren’t scoring.  They are pushing the puck right into the teeth of the defense.  They want to keep possession, probably even coached to do it.  They need to realize the only way to maintain possession in those situations is getting the puck past the other teams trap and skating to the puck.  I witnessed the Tage line do it successfully on a couple of occasions last night.  As a matter of fact that line excels at dump and chase as every one of their forwards is excellent at skating, stick handling and applying pressure on the opposing D.

It’s just recognizing when to chip the puck past the D or gain zone entry when the holes are there.  Casey Mittlestadt was the poster boy for never getting this right.  He was downright abysmal and would try to stick handle through the entire opposition D.  Now that he’s on a forechecking type line, he’s excelling.  I’m confident they’ll figure it out. Hopefully it won’t be too late.

That's part of the Team D concept causing this because they aren't breaking out early a lot anymore and taking chances that one of the D is going to win the puck and be able to start the O with a stretch pass into transition where they have numbers coming back the other way before the other team can get back like what happened so frequently last year. Sometimes they also aren't exactly staying in position either so it's like the forwards are in No Man's Land not fully committed to either heading towards transition or fully on D and aren't accomplishing much of anything.

He's probably not wrong, but the reason this team isn't winning early is not the D play. The top guys aren't scoring.

MAYBE part of playing "Team D" is getting the puck out of your zone and giving your forwards more time in the offensive zone, I can see that. But the bottom line is...your top 5 goal scorers last year accounted for over 2 goals per game (on average) and this year they are getting less than 1.

The Top line (plus Cozens) score, this team wins more often than not.

They seem disjointed to me, like as a group of 5, 3 of them are trying to play more team D oriented with the other 2 are playing more offensive oriented.  Don't look on the same page as a unit too often.

Breath of fresh air.  They needed a dick in the locker room.  Now let’s see if the kids listen to their daddy.

Have a feeling he is going to be on their @sses in practice like White on Rice until we see improvement...to the point they are going to do it at first because they don't want to hear it anymore from him.

Home product on the ice is the same product we have seen the last few years. They are easily pushed around and play scared at home. They try to be too pretty instead of just playing hockey and shooting the damn puck. They do not ever defend in front of their own net and are chicken to crash the other teams net. You can have all the skill you want, but if you do not play the basics of hockey you are not going to win much. Fans do not want to pay crazy prices to watch their home team lose night after night.

When you have the 5th worst record in the NHL at home last year and the only 4 teams beneath you are the 4 worst teams in the NHL(ANA, CLB, CHI and SJS) that are more than 30 points below you in the standings, it's a major issue.  There is no excuse for it.  They are clearly better than that. One of the best road teams in the league but can't play at home? WTF is that?

  12. And he is right...

    https://www.audacy.com/wgr550/sports/sabres/erik-johnson-knows-exactly-what-its-going-to-take-for-sabres-to-win-games

IMO, Sabres are in a weird place right now.  They are TRYING to play D better and do at times, but seemingly lose focus on that at other times and try to go back to the way they played most of last year.  However, it seems to be hurting them on both ends...they aren't fully committed to playing Team D all the time, yet they are focused ENOUGH that is also seems to be hurting them offensively and they aren't generating the chances they usually do either. Sometimes it seems like a few players are trying to play defensively while the others out there are trying to play offensively and they aren't on the same page as a group of 5 and seem disjointed with what they are trying to accomplish. So they end up kinda "meh" at both ends of the ice for much of the game.

The PK has been fantastic tho, so that is one plus.  The PP not so much.  Yes they did score a PP goal yesterday but also gave up 2 shorthanded breakaways and a few other good chances...like what are you doing?

My bet is they figure it out at some point and when they do start rolling...just hoping that doesn't take til January and we have a mountain to climb.

This is the way. I submit that one additional standard would be their tortillas: the difference between a place that knows what it is doing versus the opposite is how the handle both flour and corn tortillas.

I am flour tortillas only, I can't do corn...I try and I just don't like the taste of them.  But yeah, if they don't know how to wrap the tortillas properly to keep them in a good state prior to eating or have the little round tortilla holder thingy that keeps them fresh and warm then it's probably not going to be a good experience.

When I first moved to Buffalo in the early 1990s, this and MT were the only game in town. GM's sauce tasted more italian than mexican.  The one dish I've had there that is good are the chicken enchiladas with salsa verde.

For standard mexican fare, the easiest way for me to tell if their food as whole is good is their rice and beans.  If you can't make decent rice and beans, how can you make the rest of it decent?  The other indication for me is how good their mole is, or if they make it at all.

I usually make a quality judgement by the chips and salsa they bring out.  Some salsas are so good you just can't stop eating it and other ones you take one dip and don't bother anymore. Also pretty easy to tell when the salsa is freshly made in house or not.

The only taco bell in amherst is such a terrible location.  Regularly leaving food off of my order (almost seems intentional at this point).

Haven't been to that one...on the rare occasion I go to Taco Bell I either go to the one in Lockport or the one near Transit/Losson in Lancaster/Depew. Actually just opened a new Mighty Taco near me a few months ago on Transit/Walden.

I moved out of Buffalo a long time ago, but from my childhood, the 3 "Mexican" restaurants that I remember were Grandma Mora's (I think on Niagara Street), some place in a plaza on Maple and N. Forest in Amherst up the street from the UB Campus, and Chi Chi's chain restaurant near the Boulevard Mall at Bailey and Maple.  I recall liking all of them, for different reasons.  I recall the bar at Chi Chi's being a good happy hour place and fun bar scene, although I was a little too young to participate.  The free chips and salsa were good and they'd bring you the "extra hot" if you asked for it specifically.  I'm not going to count Mighty Taco, which has its own place in our hearts and lives...Obviously, I'm in no position to comment on the scene today, but it's nice to reminisce.  I've since lived in Chicago, which has a huge Mexican population and now live in the Southwest which has an even greater Mexican population, so I have had access to a lot of great Mexican food over the years.  From this thread, it looks like there are some good options in the Buffalo area today and a lot more than from my time there.

I know I am going to get killed for this but I also don't like Mighty Taco.  Chipotle and Moe's any day of the week over that place for me. Honestly, I think Taco Bell is better than Mighty Taco and way cheaper.

I believe it did. It’s a delayed penalty, so as long as the non-offending team retains possession, the puck remains in play. The problem is fluke plays like this. The play should have been whistled dead as soon as the offending team touched the puck, but it doesn’t work this way.

I read more about it. The play gets whistled dead once the offending team regains possession. In this case, Laval didn’t. Still weird, because taking a shot on goal should constitute possession, unless it doesn’t apply to goalies.

Sometimes in the NHL what they count as "gaining possession" is highly questionable at best.
