  1. Bills going buckwild

2 hours ago, Broken Ankles said:

Of course the injury plays into equation of why it was a failure. The Bills committed $52m guaranteed and $120m/6 total which if you look at both the value we received in three years.  He had  14 total sacks, 41 tackles, only one forced fumble and an avg 12/17 games played.  If we couple this with his off the field issues and now the dead cap issues they face ($15.4m- b/c the cap numbers in 2022/23 were so low), the concept of Von Miller was bad. It was a home run swing (my Reggie analogy) to win a Superbowl and resulted in an epic strikeout.

This signing is a much lower risk/prove it deal with no cap consequences.   Bosa’s risk of injury is far greater than when Von arrived in ‘22 (although Von did have an ACL in Denver years before), but the exposure is also very low.  I mean $12.5m in 2025 cap is 4.4% vs what Von was getting - $17m annualized) was over 8% of the 2022 Cap.  So half and no long term risk.

** But still, like Miller, the highest bidder.

It happens, that's life. Every team has those. Most more often than the Bills do

I’ll be shocked if Cozens doesn’t immediately play better not being asked to to things he’s not meant to do. 70pt year playing with Tkachuk next season and Ottawa in the playoffs before us.

Even if Norris is better for us than Cozens is now, I don’t see how Ottawa doesn’t come out of this far ahead of us.

I wouldn't...he is a mentally weak player on a team with far too many of them.  Gotta start getting rid of these players.

I don't know if I'd go THAT far to say we have a lot of guys that can create.

On the other hand, you don't always need to 'create' from the center position.  He could be someone what meshes well and finishes what Dahlin creates from the blue-line.

We have scored the most goals per game over the last 30 games in the entire NHL at 3.43 and are 8th overall this season at 3.18(fractionally away from top 5).  How are they scoring all these goals if nobody is creating them?  SOMEONE has to be creating them.

He doesn't need to score like he did this season; if he can continue to play like he has this season -- engaged, aggressive, and responsible across any line he's deployed on (Zucker's "line" has often been the Sabres' best line all year), then is an excellent signing. Yes, the speed will drop off at some point, but if they get two more years like this year's Zucker, this is an excellent move.

I want Benson learning from Zucker (moreso than from say, Okposo's game toward the end)

Zucker is a "pro's pro".  Same with Greenway. You don't want to lose players like that when you desperately need more of those kind of players.

Sabres were the only team ok with giving him the surgery

    The opposite

Sabres have scored the most goals per game in the NHL over the last 30 games at 3.43 and are 8th overall this season at 3.18(fractionally away from being top 5).

Exactly who is creating these if all we have are finishers? Makes no sense...SOMEONE has to be creating them to be producing at that level.

We all aren't going to agree on this....I respect anyone who disagrees with me as I'm wrong as much as I'm correct, but I think when this is official the Sabres immediately are a better team. Mostly because you got rid of Cozens.

The fact that they got a guy who scores at a 30+ goal pace and shoots almost double the % cozens does...I'm invested a little more the rest of the season.

Cozens tries hard, he gives this team effort.  In a way, I'm happy if he gets a chance to start with a new team in a new situation.

Norris can finish, we have a lot of guys that can create

Maybe the 'change of scenery' thing would be good for both players?

Yeah...maybe that is a reach, I don't always believe that a change of scenery helps....you are usually who you are....just Cozens is so bad away from the puck the team needs a change.

Norris is somewhat better as he is a -29 in his career over 236 games while Cozens is a -54 over 341 games.  Extrapolating Norris at the same number of games as Cozens and he would be a -41. Not great, but better.

Also...interestingly enough there is a player named Dylan Cozens that plays for the Milwaukee Brewers as well...same exact spelling. Kinda wild 2 players with such uncommon first and especially last names would be pro athletes at the same time.

Fair enough, maybe UPL is just awful.  I would like to see him play for a good coach, in a good structure, with veteran support through the line-up.  That won't happen here anytime soon.

Ruff is objectively awful for goalies.  Lehtonen, Niemi, Blackwood, Vanecek, and now UPL, all saw their save %'s implode under Ruff.  The idea of Lindy Ruff bringing a sound defensive structure to an NHL team, was and is an absolute sham.

We can make all the excuses we want but let's look at some of the other goalies we had here during this 14 years of terribleness.

Of the goalies who played 25+ games:

    • Anders Nilsson posted a .923 save percentage
    • Michael Neuvirth posted a .921 save percentage
    • Robyn Lehner posted a .916 save percentage
    • Linus Ullmark posted a .912 save percentage
    • Chad Johnson posted a .907 save percentage
    • Carter Hutton posted a .902 save percentage
    • Craig Anderson posted a .902 save percentage
    • Dustin Tokarski posted a .901 save percentage
    • UPL posted a .900 save percentage
    • Levi posted a .894 save percentage
    • Comrie posted a .882 save percentage

I would argue whoever the goalie coach has been needs to be canned ASAP and they need to bring back whoever was here during the earlier years(Irbe?) because the goalies performed really well.

  9. new goalie that can post an NHL level save percentage outside a contract year.

    This sucks

    Like legitimately sucks.

Edit: where the heck in that link is the quote lol

sounds like Pegula is falling into the Ralph Wilson move of wanting to be comfortable with the person as the GM rather than requiring him to be good at his job and get results.

Two things can be right at the same time. Ruff’s system can be hard on goalies and UPL can be having a bad year. The combo is resulting in some awful #’s.

Ruff wasn't here when UPL posted a .892 save percentage 2 years ago, very similar to the .890 he has this year. In fact, it's more likely THIS is who UPL actually is and last year was an anomaly in a contract year(surprise, surprise...never seen this before in sports, have we?) based on his overall career.  His average is a .900 save percentage in his career. That's putrid.

1.) The talent level of the Rochester's young guys is high compared to a lot of the AHL, and they have a better mix of young guys and veterans than the Sabres do.

2.) If a young guy down there isn't playing well like we heard about Kisakov, he sits. They do not have a high profile player like Dylan Cozens who sinks the entire team but keeps on playing.

3.) You mentioned the play of Levi.  In hockey, take a 'good' overall team and give them great goaltending play for a 20-30 game stretch and you will likely see them climb the standings rapidly.

3.) They have not been what I would call a juggernaut.  The have been good but up until recently they were middle-of-the pack in their division. And as far as their recent history, last year they were 4th in the conference, lost in the 2nd round of the playoffs, and had a negative goal differential. We would take that for the Sabres, but not what I would call stellar for last season.

They are a juggernaut as of right now...lead the AHL in points, tied for most wins, fewest losses, scored the most goals and have the highest goal differential at +43. Not sure what else you would need to see to term them a juggernaut, they are the best team in the AHL.

  12. This team is like the anti-Sabres...they are a freaking machine.  Now up to 73 points, 4 points clear of Laval in our division who are the 2nd best team in the league with 69 points, but they could tie us with the 2 games in hand they have.

Levi is looking tremendous down there with a 2.16 GAA and .919 Save Percentage and Isak Rosen is 2nd in the AHL in scoring with 50 points, averaging a point a game and only 1 point behind the leader who has 51 points.

Exactly how do you build a juggernaut in the AHL while your NHL team sucks?

The second bullet under Ward actually makes me lean towards him. Forgot ALLLLL about Niemi.

I guess a reasonable argument could be made that in his starting years with TB, Dilfer's number were "decent"?

69 (heh heh) TD and 85 INT seems closer to bad than decent. More like Ward's 3.68 and 0.882 ... woof.

Martin Gerber was the starter in the regular season and posted much better numbers than Ward, but he sh** the bed in the playoffs in 2 starts and Ward played much better the rest of the way. Went 15-8 in the playoffs with a .920 save percentage and 2.14 GAA.

Gerber went 1-1 with a .856 save percentage and a 3.52 GAA in his 2 playoff starts although he came in relief of Ward 4 other times, giving up a stunning 13 goals on 90 shots.

@matter2003 after carefully reviewing the virtually non-existent criteria I set forth in this challenge, I have decided to reluctantly accept Osgood.

I still think he (and Cam Ward) were no where near the level of "WTF?" in being starting 'tendies that Dilfer was being a starting QB, but they might be the closest we get?

I posed this question to ChatGPT and this is what it gives back...Osgood is #2 on it's list, Ward #3 so we were both in the ballpark 🙂

    1. Antti Niemi (2010 - Chicago Blackhawks)

    • Niemi was decent but far from elite. He posted a .910 SV% and 2.63 GAA in the playoffs, which are respectable but not stellar.
    • The Blackhawks were an absolute powerhouse with stars like Toews, Kane, Keith, Seabrook, Hossa, and Byfuglien leading the charge.
    • Chicago was so dominant that they let Niemi walk after the Cup win and still won two more Cups with different goalies (Crawford).

    2. Chris Osgood (1998 & 2008 - Detroit Red Wings)

    • Osgood was a solid goalie, but he was never considered among the NHL’s elite.
    • In 1998, the Red Wings were loaded with legends like Yzerman, Shanahan, Fedorov, Lidstrom, and Konstantinov.
    • In 2008, Detroit was again dominant, featuring Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Franzen, and Lidstrom, with Osgood simply doing enough to get the job done.
    • His 2008 playoff numbers were great (.930 SV%), but many argue he was just a passenger on a stacked team.

    3. Cam Ward (2006 - Carolina Hurricanes)

    • Ward won the Conn Smythe as playoff MVP, but that was largely because there weren’t many standout skaters.
    • His regular-season numbers were bad (3.68 GAA, .882 SV%), and he wasn't even the starter until the playoffs.
    • The Hurricanes were an underrated juggernaut, featuring Staal, Brind’Amour, Cole, and solid defensemen like Wesley and Hedican.

    4. Bill Ranford (1990 - Edmonton Oilers)

    • Won the Conn Smythe, but this was still Messier’s team after Gretzky left.
    • Edmonton had Messier, Kurri, Tikkanen, and an elite blue line with Kevin Lowe and Steve Smith.
    • Ranford was never really a top-tier goalie outside of this one playoff run.

    5. J.S. Giguere (2007 - Anaheim Ducks)

    • Unlike his heroic 2003 Cup Final run (where he won the Conn Smythe despite losing), Giguere in 2007 was more of a passenger.
    • The Ducks had Scott Niedermayer and Chris Pronger in their prime, plus Teemu Selanne and a young Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf.
    • Giguere had good numbers but wasn’t the reason they won.

That makes me wonder ... has there ever been the NHL goalie equivalent of Trent Dilfer? "We just need our goalie to manage the game and not lose it for us?" that actually won the cup?

Chris Osgood? Won 3 cups for the Wings, finished 2nd in the Vezina once early in his career buy clearly never was even close to being considered one of the best goalies of his era.  Red Wings teams just were so good they didn't need him to be great, just make some key saves when they need it.
